Hello Lotters,
*sign* The youth, always have new things to say. in fact, we never come up with an idea about this during our time as collegiate students. I, on the other hand, is very clear that Unless it's signal two or three we still have classes.i don't mind but i hate hanging out in classrooms with air-conditioned on a rainy days
While mylotting last night I've decided to Check the FAN PAGE of BANDILA (night news of ABS CBN) to see the latest updates on their evening news. then i noticed some college students that are mad and complaining about them going to school even though the flood is almost high reachable to their bodies.
one of them complained: BAKIT PAG MAY BAGYO AT SIGNAL 1&2 NAPAKALAKAS NG ULAN AT HANGIN SUPENDED N LAHAT NG CLASSES EXCEPT COLLEGE LEVEL???
ANONG KALA NILA SA MGA COLLEGE STUDENT WATERPROOF???!!!
kakaloka...ANO??// may BUILT-IN KAPOTE ba ung mga college student??
translation: Why is it when ever there's Storm Signal number 1 and 2 because of strong winds and rainsm every level of school is suspended, except college. What?! they think were BUILT-IN water proof students?!
I don't ever complained like these, probably because we got use to going to school even if it rains hard, my mom would get pissed me going to school at a strong rain. unless am lazy to go to.

If classes would be suspended each time there is rain, then I guess one semester could last to 1year. hahaha..
I don't really blame them for thinking that way, however, it's tough to be in school when you don't know if you're going to swim with the rats at night when they go home. But that's the way things have been done and there's nothing they could do about it. I think teachers and professors should also complain so that this thing could be settled.
Further, I think it's up to the school anyways if they're going to declare no classes or not. The school where I work part-time with would just declare no classes quick the moment that there's heavy rains. I think it's up to the school anyways.
I just can't imagine how people in UST could handle the floods that comes with them in college over the years hahaha..

I have seen the headline today from newspapers stating that the students were angry because of the Government Agency responsible for education's indecisiveness of whether to suspend classes or not.
I know that they're trying to keep students in schools longer so as their school calendars and schedules would not be disrupted. However, I think it's common knowledge and common sense to understand that if it's really raining hard and there's a feeling that there'd be difficulty of going home, what's the point of going to school? I don't think one day would absent wouldn't be bad to miss.
But still, I still think that the government should think about the scheduling of classes. We are after all patterned on the US classes who has 4 seasons while we only have 2. Worst is the fact that we've decided to start in June where it's the rainy period of the year. Why don't we start in March or Feb instead?
Have a great MyLot experience today!

Hello Laydee,
I guess you're right. though, i remember having a lot of suspended classes during that time because of the rain, never had this worse. well, i agree that teachers can complain because how can a teacher teach when the school is suspended or students worried about getting home and can't concentrate on studying.

I've read that quote from a friend's status in facebook - I dind't know that it was from an interview - and I laughed so hard. Not in an insulting way though. Its a funny quote cause its true...what the heck do they think of college students? ...oh and add employees as well! lol.

Hi!
I think those college students who complained about that have a point. Even though they are considered "adult" just like working people whose work don't get suspended when there's storm signal 1 and 2, that doesn't mean they are resistant to sickness that can be brought about by the rain. More importantly, if they get sick, they are not like the working people who have health insurances and salaries that they can use when hospitalized or to buy medicines. When I was a college student I asked this myself, too. I wondered what the difference was and I thought maybe because college students were older? It's not just complaining because the rain makes a person lazy to go to school or because walking in the rain is difficult even with umbrella, I think it's especially because they can get sick, too easily like the grade school students and high school students.

Hello secretbear,
Maybe i spoke too soon because I didn't study on schools about flood prone areas like UST, FEU, and EU. of course, they were floods in the premises of intramuros but that didn't stop me from going to school. but you have reasons maybe i was just not seeing other aspects besides the flood, am sorry

Oh my goodness I love that comment! I don't get why college levels aren't suspended when really, it's all the same. I mean, there are lower level schools near colleges. They have rethink this system.
More importantly, they have to rethink opening classes in June. That is such a bad idea considering it's when the rain season starts.

Hello redmaryjane,
Yeah, that's how frustrated they are from the start. i think a lot tried so hard to compensate when there is a hard rain. i have experience this myself, when they suspended the classes it was too late for me to begin with. it's tropical country here but the problem is large rain whether storm or not causes floods due to clogged pipes.

I am for if classes are suspended, it should include everyone including college students, and how about those working? They are not water proof either. Yes maybe the logic is they could better handle themselves and are already more resistant to disease unlike children haha, or maybe they already know how to make themselves water proof by using rain coats and umbrellas, if you ever studied in the University of Santo Tomas, which BTW is the oldest University (older than Harvard) especially during the eighties, you will now what flooding and going to school means

Hello Louievill,
I don't know, there's a saying, no work no pay. but that's for individual companies to decide though. I have seen the GREAT FLOOD in dapitan where University of the Philippines resides. i do understand how terrible it is, i just want to see how college students complain.

Hello newlyaldrin,
Well, i got no problem waiting for clothes to dry up knowing that it can dry soon. except in rainy days where it takes days for it. i think they should be given proper information about classes that needs to be suspended, they should have proper view out side their offices because that must be the problem where thy can't decide immediately.

I sympathize with college students. In fact, a lot of them were left stranded last week because they could not get home due to heavy traffic and flooding which resulted in a shortage of public transport. Some of them had no choice but to walk through dirty flood waters just to get home.
Maybe the reason why college students are not included in the suspension of classes is because they are already considered adults and are well able to take care of themselves already. Yes, they are not waterproof and so are those who belong to the working group. I guess this is to prepare them when they too shall soon become part of the labor force.
It is good that the storm has passed and things are quite back to normal already. Have a good day!

dear LK,
This is also my daughter's rant.
"what are they thinking (DEP-ED),that college students are superhumans?" hehehe
One thing more, who are to be blame when something happened to those college student if ever they get hurt or met some accident?
Too bad, there should be some changes..college students are still people/humans.
Okay, how about the employees?...what would be there "quotes/line" ? are they also not human?

Hello Sis Jaiho,
Students performance are deteriorated when weather like these happens.unless they have ants in their pants, there is no way that they can actually try to be active in their assignments, reviews or projects.. i think either ched or deped lack intelligence on determining whether how to suspend classes at the right time.

Oh yes this was true a year ago as I always have a debate with my daughter each time she would say, Mom, we are not included in the suspension and I got a test..." But that was over now since her university is the first to post text and messages in FB (If there's no power brownout)suspension of classes and yet still I don't heard announcement of inclusion of college students. I guess they perceived them as all boys and girls scouts who can fend for themselves even in the worst floods scenario.

I think the college students (and the workers) have a right to complain. I mean, it's not easy going to school or work without looking like you literally faced a storm on the way. I guess the only reason why college students and workers are still expected to show up is that they are more resistant to the weather...which is a false assumption. A student might be able-bodied today but there's a possibility to be sick tomorrow, if the weather is really not good. An absence due to illness is just the beginning of the problem. the same goes for workers.
Like you, I never complained about the storm signals and the students it affected. My mom would insinuate that missing a school day is like a sin. But that didn't stop me from being envious of my small cousins who don't get to rise early and have more few hours of sleep. In our society, it's always the young who gets the protection, not knowing that it applies to everybody.

Hello Jeanne,
Usually at work during my call centre days, we get an increase pay when ever we attend work on very unsure weather. unfortunately, i can't say much for the other people who can't make it because of the flood in their place. yeah, that's true, if they go now and then get sick, then they'll be absent anyways, most specially if they go to school and there's not much to do.

Hello bhabycatch,
I believe even though some high school and college students have the capacity to commute, they still have the right to safety and not going to school during dangerous times. I do remember having night classes up until nine in the evening.yes, it was hard but we always have to prepare for any kind of rains.. i do also remember how bad it was
