Deep-Fried Kool-Aid and Other Oddities

So, I was surfing the other day and came across an item about deep-fried kool-aid. After getting all the wrong visuals, I found out that they are actually balls created from a mixture of flour, water and kool-aid powder that is deep-fried so they come out like "donut holes."

I don't own a deep fryer and I don't eat a lot of fried food - except chicken once in a long while when I'm craving it. I know these deep-fried treats are sort of "carnival food" and it's become a challenge as to what kinds of things can actually be made that way... one I remember was the deep-fried Snickers or Mars bar.
Have you tried any of this kind of thing? Do you have favorites or have you found any that are especially good? Do you make them yourself? I'm curious

Boy, people do seem to want to out do each in other in weird concoctions to deep fry. At our local state fair last year I heard on the news that they deep fried a stick of butter. Who in the world is going to eat a deep fried stick of butter? Are they really that into a heart attack? Deep fried twinkies seem to be common, but I've never had one.

OMG AmbiePam... deep-fried butter? Fat fried in more fat... wow, my gall bladder is screaming just thinking about that I hadn't heard of the deep-fried twinkies but that adds another item to my weird food list. Do you go to your state fair every year? Are they known for anything specific in terms of food? Like some have special BBQ or chili or some kind of sweets. I find it fun and interesting to see how things vary from state to state.

*heads to Search to look up fried Oreos* I'm having fun with all these responses... so many things I didn't realize existed. I have to wonder how some people look at a food and think, "Gee, I wonder how that would taste deep-fried?"

At first I was so confused when I read your title, how on earth can I ever fry Kool Aid? LOL. Then when I read your post I learned that it's the powder, not the juice, hehehe. I can't imagine what it tastes like, let alone deep-fried Snickers or Mars bars! I haven't tried any of these things and I don't have any intention to. I just can't imagine how they would taste :) I have made different kinds of food but not like those mentioned above :)

I know EXACTLY what you mean, veronizm, because I thought the same thing! I was only thinking of Kool Aid as a beverage, not as a powder You might be interested or surprised to know there is also deep-fried Coke - as in Coca-Cola, the soda/soft drink. You can see a photo of a cup here:

To me, it looks very, very sweet. I am more likely to try salty foods first, rather than sweet. How about you?

Yeah that looks yummy! But I wonder if it tastes good as it looks because I just can't imagine, especially that it has oil in it! LOL. Before, I was more like to salty foods but when I got pregnant I craved for sweets and even after the pregnancy I got the liking to sweets. I still like salty foods though :)

Hi, thinkingoutloud. I have never made or tried these. I did read about this online last month though. I do wonder what does the Kool-Aid balls taste like. I know that Kool-Aid is very sweet and tart, so I could only imagine how much of sugar is placed into making the balls. This is an interesting type of food that is worth trying though.

I'm rather curious myself but, so far, I've never seen a place where I can try them. I wonder, too, if the flavoring of the Kool-Aid is so strong that you actually consume less of it in the balls versus drinking it as a beverage. Not healthy either way, though!

I have tried deep fried twinkies once and they are good. I haven't made them in a while, but I think I will soon. I do eat fried chicken once in a while and once in a while I eat homemade potato chips. I have tried deep fried snickers and they are not too bad. I am afraid to try deep fr kool-aid powder. I think that deep fried kool-aid is taking things a lit bit too far.

I don't own a deep fryer and I'm a bit uncomfortable deep frying in an open pot of oil so my fried food meals are pretty limited to what I would purchase somewhere else. Must be fun to make something like deep-fried twinkies yourself once in awhile! :)) Homemade potato chips sound wonderful - I'd love to try those because the commercial ones are often pretty disappointing.

I've been hearing about this on the radio a LOT! I thought it was like baked Alaska or something made in the same way. It seems perfect for the summer.
I haven't tried frying candy bars or anything like that, but love to bake. I used to make chocolate cake and chocolate chip cookies.

I agree with you... people hear "kool-aid" and they automatically think summer so I guess the deep-fried kool-aid fits in perfectly in the summer attraction areas like fairs, amusement parks and boardwalks! :)) I love to bake too, redmaryjane, and I find that country fairs can be an awesome place to get fabulous baked goods and also to get great ideas for things we can bake at home.

I would like to try a fried snickers bar and also fried pickles, depending on whether I crave something sweet or salty at that moment. the crazy ideas people have are amazing and I envy them a little bit cause I rarely come up with crazy food ideas.

OH!! I forgot about the deep-fried pickles! I've heard about those, too, but have never tried them. I have to admit I'm pretty curious about the deep-fried candy bars LOL I would have fun trying some of the crazy ideas too. The only thing that doesn't interest me is the "extreme" food -- like ten pound hamburgers or pizzas as big as a table top, you know? Restaurants do that to attract attention and they give free tshirts to anyone that can eat their particular "extreme food" but I just find that whole thing pretty awful :(

Oh yes! We have a few restaurants here too that serve HUGE portions that you can never eat in one sitting... but, like you said, if they let you take the leftovers home, it's nice to have for another meal :) Good value for your money there Your friend was indeed pretty sly getting you to pay for his meal that way What exactly was included in the barbecue plate? I am not familiar with the term so I'm interested to know just how much food is included in that one meal.

hi thinkingoutloud, your answer just makes me think of that one Greek place we had back in my hometown. They served enormous meals you could not finish and I didnt beliee a colleague of mine who told me. Unfortunately I had ordered a so called barbecue plate sooooooo I ended up with not being able to eat most of it. We had made a bet, if I cant finish the meal I pay for my colleagues meal too. He was sly knowing the place and making me bet. LOL. But the advantage was, you could take the leftovers with you and thats what I did. ........

I have not tried many of these things as I doubt that I would like them and I know for certain that I would not like deep fried Kool-Aid as I do not like Kool-Aid. I think that one of the foods served at the state fair last year was chocolate covered bacon- that is just nasty!!

I don't care for Kool-Aid either, never buy it...but I'm not sure how I'd feel about it as a flavoring (which it basically is in this case), rather than as a beverage. Chocolate covered bacon... interesting! I know people that love the combination of salt and chocolate. A work colleague of mine used to only be able to eat a bag of chips if she had a chocolate bar with it and another friend is addicted to chocolate-covered salted pretzels. It's quite a coincidence that you mentioned this though -- I just saw a show on the Food network yesterday, called "Outrageous Food," and they highlighted a shop that sells bacon candy. It's called The Sticky Pig in Southern California. Check out some of their flavors! LOL http://www.thestickypig.com/

There is an event a little ways from where I live called a spiedie fest. Its like a very large carnival. They have hot air balloon rides and kids and teen carnival tides as well as games and vendors and food. They have an area where people perform. The one year the cheetah girls performed there and did an autograph signing. Anyway I saw today on facebook that they are selling fried kool-aid. It didnt look or sound very good. Someone wrote that it wasnt very good. If it was free I might try it but otherwise I wouldnt waste my money on it.

I'm usually game to try anything once...even if it's horrible, I'm still curious enough to want to know what it tastes like. I'm always on the look-out for great fried chicken because it's not something I make at home.

Deep fried Kool-Aid? I don't even want to think about it. Why is it people need to constantly come up with crazy stuff you should never under any circumstances ever eat?

Oh cool... can you tell me anything about what it tasted like? I can interpret "interesting" to mean that you didn't care for it too much What did you not like about it? Taste? Texture?

I see from your profile that you are from Bulgaria, nezavisima. Are there any special "party" foods or celebration foods that are served there that would be considered unusual? Food that would not be eaten at any other time?

I do not know why but that does not sound good to me. Of course I do not klike kool aid that much.

One odd thing I learned about that could be fried is butter! I bet fried butter is the most fattening thing there is to eat!
