How do you feel about shock collars?

Hi fellow myLotters, How do you feel about shock collars for dogs, and other similar devices like shock mats? Do you think they are good to use? Personally, I dislike them. I think it is a form of animal abuse. In my opinion, there are better ways to train and discipline a dog, or most other animals. You do not need to cause them pain.

For the most part, I find them unnecessary, however in some cases, it is the best option. For example, an old friend of mine has a dog that can jump very high and will always escape if given the slightest chance. They put a collar on her and now she doesn't try to escape because she knows the consequence. If she were to escape, she could get hit by a car, get shot by a farmer, get taken to the pound, get in a fight with another dog, etc. The shock collar allows her to play outside in the yard and still be safe. By the way, this is an older dog and it is just in her personality to be adventurous. They've had her for many years and have tried to train her, but to no avail. This was the last option and it has worked.

Hi _sketch_, To be honest, I do not feel they should be used in any circumstance. There are much better ways to train and/or discipline your dog than harming them. Instead of shocking the poor dog, your friend could have simply invested a bit of money into building a higher fence or lot to keep the dog from escaping out of the yard. Don't you think?

No, I don't. She's really crafty. They do have high fences and they said she has even figured out how to climb them. And to say, "simply invested in a bit of money" is a lot easier said than done. Fences cost quite a bit, especially if they are that high. I've seen dogs do some crazy stuff to escape before. I've even knew a person whose dog has dug their way under a fence before; all in one day while they were at work. And it only hurt her the first few times. Now she learned and doesn't try anymore.

Well, I am sorry... I do not feel the same way as you about this subject. That is okay though, we can agree to disagree, right? ;)

An electric dog collar does not cause a dog pain. The dog is very sensitive to the electric shock, and when he feels a slight tickle from the collar he avoids the shock by not approaching the electric wire where he would get a real shock. Electric dog fences are Wonderful for the dog and the dogs Master as well. This invention is very humane because it gives the animal freedom, so that the dog no longer has to be tied with a chain, or shut in the barn all day.

Think of it this way - when you drive your car, you abide by strict rules. If you go through a red light, your very life is at risk. A collared dog also abides by a strict rule. If he leaves his safe zone he gets a shock on his neck. The dog is very safe from harm as long as he abides by the rules, and dogs are so intelligent they never take a chance. Can we say as much for humans?

No matter how I think of it, I still do not agree. In my opinion, there are better ways of training, disciplining, and keeping a dog contained than shocking them.

If you can afford an electric fence, why wouldn't you be able to afford to put in a higher fence or large dog lot to keep your dog from escaping? You do not have to harm a dog to keep him or her contained.

Yes i agree completely Angelee, i am absolutely disgusted by the practice and can't believe that anyone would want to do this to their pet. I would hope that their pets are taken away from them as the dont deserve to have them in their lives. I have always loved all my pets with all my heart. I would never do this to any of my animals, I wouldn't even be around someone who treated their animals this way. I dont even think they are legal are they?

Hmm, I believe they are legal... at least where I live. All I know is people use them to train and discipline their dogs, and I believe as long as they are using them "properly" it's not illegal. I am assuming they are not illegal here because they are sold in the pet section of the stores here.

Hi Angelee I find it to be a form of abuse as no pet should be subjected to being shocked. This is terrible to think of and can't imagine a human wanting and or liking it. There fore, for anyone to think this is okay would baffle me as I think it can hurt their nerves. I personally would never use this on any pet and would not like myself to be shocked either.

I think it is abuse too. I think people should have to put themselves in the place of their Pet.

I think it's animal abuse. I agree dear, there are way better forms to educate Dogs and love is always necessary. People who wants to buy these collars, operate to shut up a Dog, declaw a Cat should just stay away from animals, if one doesn't accept their nature they don't love Animals.

Hi katie0, Thanks for responding! I agree. Dogs, cats, etc... have their own nature. They are not humans, therefore they don't behave like one! If you can't accept their nature, and discipline or train them in a decent manner, then you should not own a dog, cat, etc...

Hi ftg246, Thanks for responding! :D I agree. There are many, many other ways to discipline and/or train your dog other than harming them. It is just like those who beat their dogs when they do something like bark constantly, chew something up, etc... it is just not the right way to go about it.

I can understand the escaping dog thing completely. One of my neighbors used to have a dog just like that. I say used to because he finally got taken by the pound. Another neighbor of ours went and rescued him, took him to the vet to get checked out and have his shots done and the dog has not once tried to escape from them. I think it is because his new owners take care of him and are giving him the attention that the first ones did not. Now I'm not saying that this is the case for all dog owners with this problem but there are better, more humane alternatives to shock collars. Look it up if you need to know.

The use of shock collars, for me, are brutal. Yes, there are ways of training dogs and other animals, ones that won't hurt them. Like people, some animals do have a pre-existing conditions like cardiac problems. Once the shock is delivered, it may cause them to die because the shock delivers electric waves that might shock the heart and cause its rhythm to go insane. Such poor animals.

I don't like to even know about dogs having shock collars on. It is abusive. It causes pain and fear in the pet. Shocking them causes them to be too scared to be happy I think. The people didn't shock the dogs that I knew about. They have a fence and if they try to go throuh or under the fence they get shocked. They calso have miniature horses in an electric fence.

I agree with you. Also, for the most part, they don't even work. My boyfriend's dog was run over even though she had a shock collar on, and all because his family was too cheap and lazy to put up a fence. In my opinion, if you're going to have a pet, you should get a fence as well as anything else they might need to keep out of trouble, NOT something as inhumane as a shock collar. Sometimes I wish the people that put the animals through that would be given a shock collar of their own...
