My niece is seeing the angel of her dad

My brother passed away unexpectedly two months ago. He was in the army and was very young with a two year old daughter, married and a baby on the way. Just the other night my niece woke her mom up crying. When she asked what was wrong- my niece said her dad was standing at the foot of the bed looking at them and it scared her. How can you explain angels and death to a two year old child? I know that this has been really hard on my sister-in-law. Apparently it is not the first time that she has seen the angel of her dad. It shocked my sister-in-law because she did not know what to say to her.
