As far as I know, it is a peer-to-peer sharing site wherein you could share music, video and other files with other users. I believe they used to have a "client" software that you need to install for you to be able to browse and share/download files that you are looking for. Because the site and the software itself allows downloading and sharing of pirated music and videos, limewire has been hounded by numerous cases in court. I think recently they were ordered to cease operations. That's the last that I heard about it.
