That's true. reading give us a wide range of knowledge if we read books on varied topics specially informative ones.
I gain so much knowledge in word meanings whenever i read books. I would always have with me a dictionary , so that when i meet an unfamiliar word, i would look it up in the dictionary.
That was how i improved a lot on my English.

That too, is another way of learning the English language. watching English Movies and commentary shows, helps you on how English words are pronounced. I also did learn through them on how to pronounce some words.

For me, experience is the best teacher. But still you can gain a lot of knowledge just by reading. This is the most easy and convenient way to learn. A book by its nature is a gateway to the great minds of other people. It is like reading other people's mind and absorbing them. Pretty simple.

Maybe I read it somewhere that around 10% of your knowledge was gained through reading and that around 70% or some other kind of percentage of knowledge gained is through experience. The 70% is not accurate though but the percentage gap is big if I remember it correctly. That's why I subscribe to the concept that experience is the best teacher. But yeah, still reading is valuable to gain knowledge!

I have learned a lot from books, although I think the most important things to know i have learned just from experiencing life, but I've learned a lot of facts and ideas from books.

Hi HDH,
Reading exercises the brain as opposed to watching TV. When the mind reads a printed page, it goes to overdrive working making sense out of the collection of letters, words, sentences and paragraphs. Done regularly, it builds up more brain power just like a muscle used often in physical exercise.
When watching TV, everything has been provided for all the senses: the colors, pictures, sights and sounds that the brain just shuts down automatically and goes to passive mode, never bothering to work out what is presented onscreen. Now, a brain that is not always flexed, like a muscle shall soon atrophy and becomes useless for any kind of work.

Yeah, i love reading books also. We always can get some value or learn some lesson for reading book. Besides that, they provide me a lot of knowledge no matters it is about history, science or life. Book is definitely a thing that i can't live without.

Yes reading helps us to gain knowledge, but only if we are willing to at first hold an open mind and at the end attempt to discern it against all previous information we have gained.

Of course. If a person practices the habit of reading an extensive amount of materials and from different mediums, the perosn will be bound to pick something from what they read and apply it to themselves and to others. That in itself is knowledge. If you learn something and it informs you to make a decision, that is also knowledge. And sometimes, people often sought knowledge from reading because they know that information is disseminate through various forms of media. That information is processed by a person by reading.
Reading is important becuase it allows a person to 'decode' the information form various sources. They are many available information in the world but it cannot be considered useful unless somebody reads it and makes use of it.

Yup,when we are reading we can gain a lot of knowledge. It is one source of knowledge.Sometimes,it is boring to read so I occasionally opened a book.I only opened a book if a want to or to know something. We have also the internet know that we can search and read what we want to learn.Reading is good to exercise our brain and to prevent early forgetfulness when we get old.It is a kind of exercise to our nerves.

I have learned quite a lot of things from reading books. I found out that if you add oil to rice it doesn't boil over.lol and I use that bit of knowledge quite often. Sad as it is, now most people read the latest vampire book or something about magic instead of biographies. I used to love reading autobiographies, but I don't really have time for them anymore. That's where I learned my oil trick. And I also used to read a lot about gardening and carpentry, two things I'm passionate about. So I've learned a lot there.

For the most part I wouldn't know much of anything if it weren't for books! A lot of times I have trouble understanding what people are trying to teach me themselves, and I won't understand until I go off on my own to read about it. Honestly, in school, it made more sense to me if I ignored the teacher and just read the textbook on my own. It's a shame that more and more kids these days hate books like they do.

i will tell you the reason why most of the kids hate books because first of all they are more intersted in playing games, surfing diffrent sites, chatting in social networks, downloading movies and all kind of stuffs.but still i feel reading books is a good hobby and it kind of makes your mind a little creative and happy that's what i believe have a nice day.
