Mao was famous worldwide for his "little red book". I was a schoolboy at the time. The Chinese embassy would send a copy of the book to anyone who requested it. I got mine that way.
It was a collection of sayings and quotations. Pretty much what you would expect from a communist state, except it was much more rambling and incoherent than the typical Lenin type statements.
How much was lost in translation, I cannot say, but it really wasn't very impressive. But it obviously was a fantastic piece of political "marketing". It united China at a time when it was most needed. Later Mao was much criticized and it became clear that he was not the "great leader" that he had been made out to be. If that is true or not, I don't know.
What is clear is the fact that as a political campaign, it was unrivaled. Politicians today, or their puppet masters, would be highly envious of Mao's elevated status.
