I have two children 8 and 5. We lived in WA state their whole life and lets just say you dont swim much there. We recently moved to San Diego. We have a comunity pool and my kids want to go. They have swam in pools, we have taught them some while swimming. My husband thinks I should put them in swimming lessons, I think we can teach them on their own. The pool here is only 4 ft deep making it the perfect place to teach I think. Parents use to teach their kids before swim lessons came along. What do you think? Can a parent teach swim lessons as well as an instructor?

My son is 7 years old now. Last year in the summer vacation I let him learn to swim in the swimming class. That is because we can't teach him how to swim even if we can swim. The teaching is another issue. Perhaps we don't have the method or the child won't usually listen to us. So in the swimming class he had to follow the coach no matter what. I think it is alright for you to try to teach your children to swim. If you can do it successfully, at least you can save some money:) And I believe nobody can take good care of your children as well as you:) If finally your children can not learn from you, then you can let them study in the swimming class. It don't matter.

Lol I wish I went to swimming lessons. My siblings thought me how to swi by throwing me in the deep water and telling me to swim :( .. But I did learn to swim like that. It was a very mean way but it worked. Thats how most people teach there kids to swim on the island. But swimming lessons sounds much more fun and way safer. And a child will love it when they learn to swim its a life long skill.

I suggest you and your husband take your children to the swimming pool. They can gain confidence in the water and learn to swim hopefully. I had swimming lessons in my school's outdoor swimming pool. However I didn't manage to learn how to swim then. I was ten years old on vacation in Devon that I learned how to swim. Parents are often able to teach their children how to swim as well as an instructor.

I prefer swimming classes. I cannot swim and it's may be because I never attended classes and my father was teaching me. He is a very good swimmer but maybe he didn't have the way how to encourage me. That's why now I'm sending my kids to have swimming lessons. I think it's very important to be able to swim as it is fun too. For me maybe it's already late but my kids should know how to swim :).

Yes parents can teach their children the way they want to,but it is much better that they will be guided by the instructor because they were trained and being paid for that.Parents can just guide them after their session for a review.

My parents taught me how to swim and I just taught my 5 year old daughter last weekend how to swim! Why pay for it when you can do it yourself? Just my opinion but I think people rely too much on other people to do the same thing they can do themselves! =)

I have two children, my daughter is eight and my son is four. I did teach my daughter to swim and last summer she was on the community summer swim team and did just fine, in fact there were many times that she beat the other children that she was swimming against. On the other hand, last summer I enrolled both my son and my niece in swim lessons. It wasn't that I didn't think that I could teach him to swim, but I was watching both of my nieces at the time and trying to work with three at one time was more than I thought I could do.
In conclusion, if you are able to work with them one at a time, I think it would work out well to do it yourself. However, if you have to work with more than one child at a time, it might be a bit much for someone that isn't a certified water safety instructor.

If you know how to swim and are comfortable then teach them yourself. I taught both of my kids at a very young age, like two or three. They are still learning, because as we all know life is a learning process. We have a pool so I stress water safety. If you like Youtube they have videos that can help you to teach a child to swim.

In my case, I also put my children into swim classes and it's my husband who thinks that he can show them, so he wouldn't spend the money to pay a school or a teacher. But, in my opinion, it's not the same. When we go with them to the beach, as parents as we are, they only think off playing on the beach inside and outside the water. But in swimmingpool with a teacher beside it seems to be different, they pay more attention and have more respect.

Parents can teach their children how to swim, but many children prefer swim classes just so they can meet new people and socialize. This is especially important if your child is an only child or there are mostly elderly people in your neighborhood. Putting them in swim lessons helps them feel more comfortable because there are other kids around.
