Yes, honey has many benefits, as you have pointed out. However, there are other ways to get the same benefits or better without using honey or exploiting any members of the animal kingdom. For a more balanced argument, let's take a look at "the other side" of honey. I'm not saying you are wrong for doing what you have done, for the sake of convenience or saving money, but now that you have heard more of the full story, will you consider changing? Here goes:
Being vegan, we don't consume honey or any animal products. Please research how "farmed" bees are being treated all over the world, especially in India. You will be surprised. There are much better substitutes for honey & sugar (which I also avoid, because it is much worse for my health & the processes involved are non-vegan) that are available. If you want something of the same consistency as honey, try rice malt or barley malt, etc. If you want something similar to sugar, go for herbs like stevia, which is expensive, but many times sweeter than sugar. There are nowadays many products that use fruit juices, etc as natural sweeteners. There are many bad reports about what goes on in the beekeeping industry. It is best to stick to consuming certified organic whole foods, especially those one grows oneself, as we often have no way of knowing what goes into our food products. Consuming foods grown with / containing antibiotics makes one less responsive to being treated with antibiotics if / when the time comes. They also have many other harmful side-effects. Be careful with what you put into your body... it's the only one you've got, so make the most of it & give it the best.
It is my understanding that bees only produce enough honey for themselves, both for immediate use & in later seasons when flowers are not blooming. They really don't intend for humans to continuously take all the fruits of their best efforts from them on a regular basis. On the fact sheets we get from vegan societies, there are many more arguments why people shouldn't eat honey. Many beekeepers run their businesses like factory farms. They often take inhumane steps to ensure personal safety, meet production quotas & maximize profits. Larger honey producers are known to clip the wings of queen bees to stop them leaving the colony. Others are known to artificially inseminate queen bees similarly to what is being done to livestock on factory farms today. When the keeper wants the queen to move to a new colony, she is carried with "bodyguard bees", all of whom, if they survive transport, will be killed by bees in the new colony. Bees need at least sixty pounds of honey to survive the winter (USA figures). Many operators are not aware of this & take all of it regardless. Others replace this honey they've taken with a cheap sugar substitute that is not nearly as fortifying & tastes not as good. In colder areas, if keepers think it too costly to keep the bees alive over the winter, they will destroy the hives by pouring fuel over them. Bees that aren't killed by the fumes will die when the keeper sets it on fire. Many keepers feel lost bees are easily replaced, so allow them to die when they spray their trees with insecticide. Bees are often killed or their legs & wings torn off by haphazard handling.
To produce one pound of honey, bees must travel over 55000 miles to gather pollen from over 2 million flowers. Food miles. In 1987, honey production in USA made a profit of US$115.4 million. It's much more than that these days.
An organic certified product, facilities & grower is not as good as one with a bio-dynamic certification. Bio-dynamics have much higher minimum ethical standards than certified organic. It will, of course, come with a higher price-tag. Unless I'm familiar with the practices carried out by the beekeeper, I'd be very hesitant to purchase their product. It comes at too higher price for me.
Wishing you Good Health :-)

Wow! VeganBliss.. I didn't know all of this. My father used to raise honey bees, but I never knew much about his business.. he got stung quite a bit when he moved his bees from NY to GA. They were some mad bees. It was a hobby for dad, so we had honey but we never sold any.

Ah honey, the best thing given to us by GOD. Sorry, I had to say it. Anyway I do agree with what one person here said -- babies under a year old should NOT be given honey. It's extremely dangerous for them. But other than that, I totally agree. Honey is an awesome alternative to sugar, and very beneficial for your health.

Thank you for lot of Information regarding Honey and its uses.If you would had told the quantity to be added and taken per day might be a good help .
So what is maize silk ash, coconut hair ash and peacock feather ash (is it the peacocks feather ) ?
I read the discussion some went controversial also to honey , they are also right as well as you are also right. If both are correct in your views then what is to be followed ? Not to hurt the plants and animals(innocent cows and bees), then should we hurt ourselves .
Plants and every living being has life in it.So are we killers of everything. For our
selfishness and for our living and having food daily are we utilising their resources for our purposes. Its just i am asking to know , not to point out anyones views over here.So what should we do ?We are vegetarians we are kililng we are non vegetarians also we are killing. For our living we do lot of things ,cut the trees use everyting of a plant for many medicines and for our home furniture.
We kill the street dogs or the government places an order to get them operated ,what are we doing actually .What rules are we making and for what .
Do the other living creatures when hurt by humans go and pray to god to help them and to make us learn a lesson.Does this happen.
So only the nature turns so harsh on us,creating some natural disasters , is it so that nature itself tries and teaches us a lesson.
I do not hope the topic Honey you started changes so bitter and sour.Honey should be sweet always ,i understand rather than wasting anything it can be used for a good purpose so its the human who has to judge. He should use his intellect to understand the things and do what is good and not to do what is wrong.

Honey is very bad for babies to eat under one year old. They can get sick from it. The reason is because it has some kind of bacteria in it that is not safe for them, and they could get botulism.

I agree with you that honey has a lot of benefits for the health and beauty and I'm very happy that my kids started to eat honey as well. Especially during winter I'm giving them only honey and lemon when they start with the flu. I'm using the honey also for my face. There are a lot of homemade masks for the face especially for dry skin.

O, stitchwitch, you made it sound so bad :). Unfortunately we and especially the kids also need calcium for strong bones and the milk is the easiest and fastest way to obtain that calcium. And if you add a spoon of honey it becomes a fantastic drink for breakfast :). About the growth hormones in the cow milk unfortunately it's not the only reason for the early development of the kids these days. Unfortunately the environment today is so polluted with chemicals and pesticides in the fruits and veggies that you cannot really say what is causing the change in the human development. Yes, I understand your point but I cannot be that extreme and stop my kids from drinking milk.
ritzz07, thanks for your suggestions for breakfast. I'll try again the oats with honey even though the previous time I didn't have success :).

Well, I don't know that what you have said there is true or not; I don't see any reliable sources of information to validate that honey is going to help a person lose fat or get rid of kidney stones, but I do know that honey did help me get over an asthma attack before... it helped me when nothing else did... so if you say honey does this stuff, I will believe you until I know otherwise, because I know that honey is good stuff!

Hello ritzzo7, I agree with you Honey is really a gift of nature, specially raw honey.Raw honey is the concentrated nectar of flowers that comes straight from the extractor; it is the only unheated, pure, unpasteurized, unprocessed honey. An alkaline-forming food, this type of honey contains ingredients similar to those found in fruits, which become alkaline in the digestive system. It doesn’t ferment in the stomach and it can be used to counteract acid indigestion. When mixed with ginger and lemon juices, it also relieves nausea and supplies energy. Raw honey is the healthiest choice amongst the various forms of honey as it has the most nutritional value and contains amylase, an enzyme concentrated in flower pollen which helps predigest starchy foods like breads. This was in addition to all the benefits that you have listed above. Thanks

hi ritzz07 honey has a lot of good things going for it b ut your blanket statement about diabetics can eat honey is misleading and wrong.some diabetics that are borderline maybe but long time diabetics most of us can eat very little honey as it raises our blood sugar too quickly.the only good time for this would be if you are having a low blood sugar attack and have honey but no candy or orange juice honey in moderate amount will bring your blood sugar up to normal.I hate it when non diabetics who are not doctors make blanket statements as a lotof diabetics will believe this and eat gobs of honey and fall into a coma and if too high can die.It can be natural and still not be good for diabetic. carrots are natural but few of us can eat but just a tiny amount same with white rice.leave diabetics alone as we already have a team helping us with whats good for us individually to eat.

Lots of good information on honey. I keep it in my refrigerator. I even put honey in my dogs pail of water, so they get just an inkling everyday.

Hiya ritz,
Wow what a load of great information about Honey. It has to be natural though and I try to make sure that it is as natural as possible when I buy it.
I always have some here in a Jar in a Dark Cupboard and it´s great for those tickly coughs that keep you awake at night.
All the same I only like Honey in a Drink like mint Tea or fruit flavoured tea.
The more natural the better and it´s like a treasure to have around.
I don´t replace it as a substitute for sugar though I only take it when I feel I need it.
If there is a Bee in the House I open all the Windows and Doors for it to find it´s own way out as I have no wish to kill it.
Milflores Honey is a great favourite here and Azahar which is made from Orange Blossoms and the other from a variety of flowers.xxx

yes. My people have been telling that diabetic people cannot take honey. But u have rightly stated and I am giving a link to support this:
http://www.honey-health.com/honey-17.shtml
You seem to be knowing a lot in this young age. Keep it up. Increase ur awareness and help others.
Studies in this field are not numerous. The reader's attention should be drawn to the fact that there is a available a kind of honey called " Sidr Al Innab", which is suitable for the diabetic, and it activates the pancreas of those who use it. It led to decrease the in many cases This is due to the following reasons: -
1 Natural honey contain an insulin - like hormone.
2 Honey causes a kind of shock to the beta cells. This causes the pancreas to act due to the high amounts of sugar that the honey contains. This causes an affluent secretion of insulin.
3 There may exist other reasons which god only knows.?

Thanks for your info. For me, I give honey to my baby whenever she feels any discomforts, ailments or sickness. Like for example, having loose stools, I give her 1 tsp of honey, having cough and colds and these will all go away immediately. I do not need to give her antibiotics and other medications. Sometimes, some ailments do not get cured with these medications and physicians will change it to another medications, leaving you with additional expense, effort, and time.
Honey is better, proven effective and cheaper!

Wow, I love this post, our family is a big fan of honey, and I've been trying to research the health benefits of honey myself. I've heard that ancient Roman soldiers carried honey in their packs as a first-aid remedy, for putting on wounds and cuts. I'm not sure how much that works as I'm a big fan of tea tree oil.
hmm...I'm wondering if there's such thing as honey oil.....
