Baby on Watching TV

Hi fellow parents. I have a 7-month old baby. I am just wondering, do you let your baby watch TV as well. My baby girl loves to watch commercials, especially shampoo commercials. Basically we're not very strict on filtering the type of television shows to watch. I know this is wrong, they say. What about you guys? At what age you started letting your baby watch tv? What were the negative effects of not filtering the shows she watched. Were there any in the first place?

Hi Ip! I'm not a parent yet, but I have friends with kids. They allow their babies to watch TV and I don't see them being bothered. But you are right, perhaps they should. If it were me, I would filter what my child watches. I'd probably feed her with educational, fun videos instead.

Awww, I'm having palpitations as I read your response. I am really so confused right now. I want to enjoy every minute of my time with my daughter, but I can't just let go an income that supports my family. If in case I decide, I must find an online income that can equal or even exceed my salary. Otherwise, I cannot provide for her needs.

A side of me dictates that I should consider work from home jobs so I can watch her grow every step of the way. Right now, I can only see what she does a few hours every day. I work at night so I have no choice but to sleep in the morning.

You're a very busy woman ip. I remember my mom stopped working until we were all at least 5 years up. It was a difficult decision for her because she really loved her job. She says it's all worth it, though. If you think you'll be a more fulfilled mom, then you and your hubby should have talk about it.

While my kids were very young I did and they too enjoyed Sesame Street. They loved the songs and funny characters. As they got older then I began to restrict the TV as I was a single parent and worked a lot therefore, I took them out a lot so that they did not cling on to TV. I paid for Catholic school Education so TV in my home was not allowed Monday through Thursdays as the homework, dinner and some time together was quite important to me. You will be fine as you will know what to restrict as she gets older and just be sure to be consistent. Good luck and many blessings to your 7 month year old, what a great age.

I think at 7 months, it would be nice to show them educational cartoons, those that will also make them enjoy. I'm thinking if I do this she will feel loved and valued. Yeah, when she grows up, I don't to hear a complaint from her saying I deprived her. I don't want her to ask me who Ariel was because when she was young she never had the chance to watch little mermaid.

Hi HWG, My daughter and I both loved Sesame Street. I enjoyed watching her enjoy it. She still talks about when we watched it together when she was little and she is 41 now… so that really ages me, doesn’t it? I believe in also being consistent. If you say no to a certain type of TV programming for children, don’t waffle on it, because the kids will call you on it “well you let me watch it last week!” Have a great day!

We live in an apartment so we don't have a lot of space - one of the things we got rid of was our tv. (The TV had been in the room that became the baby's room).

We gave the tv to my younger cousin. With the baby in the house, we don't have a lot of free time, so we haven't really missed watching tv.

Oh. Where did the tv go? What about you guys? What if you want to watch your favorite shows or the News?

Awww, that's nice of you to just give it away. Is your baby older now? Did you ask for it back?

My daughter is now 4 but when she was a baby, I was putting her in her rocker at 3 months old to watch Raggs which is an Australian kids show...she loved it as they characters are brightly colored...this gave me 30 mins free to do house work as she never slept during the day.

For some reason, the only two things my baby loves to watch on Tv are the shampoo commercials and the News. We bought her cartoon dvds but her attention span for these is just very limited. When she was 3 months she didn't really bother to watch tv. She just wants us to be there with her and talk to her. If she feels that she is left alone in her crib then she cries.

Maybe she likes the music that is played on the commercials...My daughter used to just watch the tv at 3 months old because of the bright colors when I put on her fave show...I vacuumed the house when this was on & when I got into the lounge room, she would be asleep but the sleep wouldn't last for long

When my daughters are still a baby, I always bought educational DVDs instead of letting them watch the television programs. They love Barney because of the music it shares and of course Dora and Pooh. It was a great way to keep them still and silent because you could load 3-5 cds at a time and they kept on running until they feel sleepy.

Ok I'll buy her new ones. Maybe, she didn't like dora or she was too young when I showed her.

The same age as your baby, maybe because of the music.. not because they understand the show.

Hi JP, I don’t see anything wrong with letting a baby watch TV. If you are watching TV, then what is wrong with your baby watching TV? My daughter loved watching commercials too. I don’t think babies should be watching stuff with foul language in it or suggestive stuff… granted they may not know what the words are or what the gist of the TV show is all about, but you might be surprised when you baby starts to speak and starts saying cuss words. Then you have to take time to explain that they can’t say those words because they aren’t nice… or that they are adult words and little girls and boys don’t say those words… Have a great day!

Correct. It's better not to introduce them to those negative things. It would be a waste of time teaching them to unlearn it. Good thing our home is not really fond of saying cuss words, nor are the television shows we watch.

With regard to tv commercials being my daughter's favorite, I also mentioned this to my boss. She said her kids liked tv commercials as well. I don't know what's in a commercial that interests them?

I would suggest that you get some classical or light classical music CD and play them for your child. There are many people who feel that listening to classical music helps develop the child's brain. http://www.educationoasis.com/resources/Articles/building_babys_brain.htm Music also has a calming effect on the child.

Mi kids are all one and older now and when they were old enough to sit up i would turn to daytime television and allow them to watch maybe a few shows while i cleaned or cooked or something of that nature. My baby is now 22 months old so she now enjoys watching nickjr/noggin. Her favorite shows are blues clues and yo gabba gabba.

My baby is just 7 months and a few weeks today. I'm sure she will also love these types of shows once she reaches that age. I want her to experience what everyone else did.

My kiddos were allowed to watch television from the time that they were able to focus on what was on the screen. Both of them sat with me and watched things as I was watching them and I also did a lot of educational programs. Now my children are eight and four years old and they are both advanced for their ages. I think that the fact that they've watched educational television has really enriched their lives.

Hi ip! I have a 3-month old baby and every once in a while I let her watch TV shows in my computer (we have no TV). I had to make sure that it's appropriate for children and babies though. This is quite important because what they see greatly influences them. Babies can be very observant so it's important that what they watch are ones that are appropriate for their age. I also let her watch some of the videos that we record of her. Like videos of her laughing and making conversations. She likes it very much coz she laughs when she hears our voices in the video :)

We can let the baby watch cartoons while we leave them in their crib, to do something. But it doesn't necessarily mean leaving him alone for a long time. You have to watch them from where you are doing your chore.

This is not going to be a problem in our case because we just have a very intimate house. We will see almost all the corners of our house at a glance. I just hope she grows up, copying only the good things she gets from these shows she watches on TV.

Well if you ask me then i would suggest that you only make your baby watch gentle videos. Like with a soothing theme, something that talks about fragrance.. I can also suggest watching fashion vids and Oh i almost forgot, Baby stuffs.. something that tlaks and deals with babies..

She's with her nanny most of the time, and the nanny loves to watch soap operas. I just hope she's not interested in those. For now I can say my daughter just loevs commercials, especially shampoo commercials.
