Does anyone live in the Oakland, CA area?

I am looking to relocate from the east coast to Oakland, CA for an AmeriCorps VISTA (volunteers in service to America) position. I will serve for a year in West Oakland if I decide to take the position. I wanted to know if anyone can tell me a little about Oakland. Also, can anyone recommend any areas in Oakland that will be safe for a female to live?

i grew up their and i would suggest you move to an outside city such as alameda, hayword, san leandro, castro valley, or other city.
