Am I really the only mom who washes my kids hands like 10 times a day? I literally take my son to the bathroom every so often to wash his hands. And I will do this at grocery stores like Walmart too. I have other women, moms even, look at me like I'm crazy. But do u realize how many germs there are in public places? And kids have to touch everything and put fingers in their mouth. Am I really so weird for doing this? Please tell me I'm not the only one.

I dont have kids so you may say dont post when you are not a mom. But my mother who was a nurse sure must have done that with me when I was small.
I think so as I am really attentive about washing my hands. Like when I handled money first is wash hands. If I cant as there is no restroom or running water I use hand sanitizer. Mainly when I commute to work and buy a snack and then want to eat it that sanitizer is the perfect solution.
Be assured I would do the same if I had kids and teach them

hi scarface I sure do my best to keep healthy. Got to admit I dont do everything I was taught when younger but washing hands is something I will continue to observe. But as I am diabetic I need to use hand cream more often as the hands get chapped easily. Still got to get used to that. LOL
Wish you a wonderful day as well and thanks for your nice comment

Yea I think my mom is the reason I am the way I am with this. She would make me wash my hands before and after I touched any food or while we went shopping. I wash my hands several times a day now. I probably wash ten times alone when I cook. And it is in part about staying healthy too.

i think it is becoming an obsession for you if you see enough people looking at you like crazy for washing your kids' hands like that.
Let them get dirty. Let them wear gloves then. Give it a break.
Use hand sanitizer if you must.

I let him get dirty plenty, trust me. We play outside most days. And we take him to the river and beach and such too. I guess I should have put the reason these women look at me like I'm nuts is that I have to puck my son up to wash his hands in those self powered sinks. And it takes forever. But I never see any other mom do this, they might wash their hands, but never their kids when they go to the bathroom. I mean, don't u wash your hands after you go? Then why wouldn't you wash your kids when they go? Makes no sense to me.

hi my dear friend, i love to respond discussions in parenting section.
no, you are not the only mom who washes her kids hand ten times a day. i am the same and my hubby too. we just cant take our baby to take dirty hands near her face, we make her wash every time she goes to our store (a place where i keep all sort of extra and un-used items)it is a bit dusty in that area. so if we see her around also in that area we ask her to wash her hands. the moment she enters home, from where ever , she has to first remove her footwear , wear bathroom slippers and wash her hands and feet.this is rainy season so i insist to wash her feet also.i know too much of this washing and taking care makes our child's immune system or there immunity a bit low but what to do. i just cant see her taking and going all around with that dirt.
we have seen such a difficult phase in mid of January that now we are extra extra careful on everything of her. we landed in straight ICU in the middle of the night and the doctors were also confused about her state. when we asked that what happened , for how much time do she has to stay, they had no answer. and we were like, oh GODwhat is this going on , that has happened to our baby. we have not done anything wrong, what is this happening. why are we seeing all this. now what she eats, what she drinks, where she goes, what ever, whatever, wherever, we are hundred percentage there to guard her because we have burnt our fingers very badly once and the doctor also have asked use to take a bit extra care.
i think what you do, is very good you should never leave that and make it a habit. like now our daughter has a habit of coming and straight going in the bathroom. nothing doing, nothing touching. parents have to be crazy man, they have to be like this. babies of parents like us, they need care, pamper more. babies who are born and grown on streets they are born strong and one of the very strong reason is that at time mother was in all that state, so they have given birth in all that thin, there immunity will be more strong, its very obvious. like mosquito whose eggs are hatched in dirt , some medicines cant kill them. because they are use to that medicine.its nothing weird my friend , every parent is same, one or two percent maybe different otherwise they have same heart for their child.

Yes! I agree with you scarface! It is better to be safe than sorry. My work before entails me to handle different kinds of chemicals in the laboratory. I always make it a point to wash my hands every now and then. But of course as everybody should know, anything that is done excessively is bad. Same goes with excessive hand washing. Just my two cents in here!

I will always wash my hands after I use the bathroom and also before and after I eat a meal. I don't like to over wash my hands, because bacteria can help to build your immune system. If you wash your child's hands too much they will not develop to have such a strong immune system and they may become ill more often in later life. This is one of the reasons that children become ill more more often than adults; their immune systems are not yet fully developed. However, to do this, it is important that they are allowed to be typical children and spend their time putting dirty hands into their mouths.

Ha ha. He gets plenty of dirt in his mouth. We live on a farm so it comes with the territory. I let him play outside as much as I can, when its not so hot. He loves being outside and so do I. And he loves playing I'm mudd puddles after it rains, and he's so cute doing it. So I'm pretty sure he gets his fill of dirt.lol

No Friend you are not the only mother and you child is not the only child to wash hand 10 time in a day. It is necessary for every child because in our hand lot of virus and bacterias are there and every mother has the duty to check hands of their child and tell to wash it.

I guess I am trying to get my son to be clean. Mainly cuz we all know little boys dont like to take baths. Especially if he takes after my husband.lol but there are so many diseases people can catch just by touching something that is dirty. It's so much safer to just wash your hands than to take a chance on getting sick.

I wash my hands at least 6 times a day. I think you do a good and thought full job. Children don't have the knowledge so they will use there hand anywhere and it can make them ill.
So it is good that you take of care of them. Have a nice day ahead.

Awww thanks. But I agree, kids don't really know that touching everything will make them sick. They are just curious about their surroundings. And that cute little bunny rabbit is probably carrying as many germs as a public toilet, lol but they don't know the difference and couldn't care less. They just want to explore.

No, you're not the only one. Washing hands is probably the single best thing you can do to prevent germs and getting sick. We always had our kids regularly wash their hands when they were growing up. I always wash my hands after going to the bathroom and before eating. It's a good, healthy habit!

Ironically, the research shows that people who grow up exposed to germs when they are young, have a better and healthier immune system, which protects them when they get older.
When they are young, is exactly when you want them to be exposed to germs, so they can have a strong immune system when they get older.

It is right to wash hands before eating and after coming back to home. But it is not a good habit to wash hand after every 10 minutes. Remember every person have their immunity system. So strong immunity system of your child to fight with bacterias and virus.

hi! Dear! I agree with what you said and your concern. But as a child, they like to paly with others children,in spite of what diry for their hand. It's children's inborn. When your child stay in kindergarden, I think it's unable to do anything for you.So the best way is teach our child to keep clean from instant to instant.
It's better to have good habits when they was young.

I'm not going to tell you that you are going overboard, but if your child is easy to get sick it could be that you are weakening his immune system. You kill too many germs the kid's immune system has nothing to stimulate it. I would use common sense and protect him from germs in grocery stores, but I'd also let the child get dirty once in awhile. Using antibacterials all the time can be a health hazard, so if you have to wash his hands umpteen times I would use regular soap and not antibacterial.

It is important to wash hands the right way,
because we come into contact with millions of germs every day.
from the source that i have ever read, a few steps below can be applied to wash their hands the right way:
1. Turn on the faucet, preferred to use water that is not too cold or warm water thet flows.
2. Use liquid hand soap (precedence over the bar soap).
3. Rub hands together both palms and back of the hands, between fingers, and nails for 20 seconds.
4. Make sure you clean the entire hand, especially in the area around the nails and between fingers.
5. Wash hands throughly with a tap water.
6. Use a towel to dry hands.
7. Turn off faucet with a towel as you open the faucet with your hands are still dirty.

No your not the only one,its the best way to protect your kids for germs and other bacteria. Its best to make sure that their hands are clean after touching things, especially in public places.Germs is every where,we as mom must protect our kids from them.
Kids love to touch things, and then place their hands at their mouth so our duty is to keep their hands clean at all times. Your not the only one my dear, your doing a good job.

You should make them wash their hands as often as possible.Kids tend to touch many things, hence they are made to wash their hands. Some people i know use a hand sanitizer it saves embarrassment when there is no place to wash.Using public places to wash so often might not be a good idea as many people use the same soap.

It's but natural that we would like our children to be always having clean hands. That's because, as kids, our children tend to overlook the importance of having a clean hand at all times. They would just take any food without even washing their hands. So, it is our duty to always wash their hands.
But i suggest, during those times when you are outside, always have with you a sanitizer. That way, you can clean your children's hands even if there is no water available.

You are not the only one! Sometime I too do that and keep at my son all the time watching him and yelling at him when he even tries to touch his face. But seriously, doing this all time will in fact be harmful for our children, because this will deter their bodies from developing their immune system against most common and not so harmful bacteria and viruses. So it is good to turn an occasional blind eye and let them do what they want. I even let my son play in soil at times as much as he wants, but good, clean garden soil where dogs and other pets are not allowed.

Yes. It's alright to protect your children from virus and bacterias, but you don't want their immune system to go weak. Not all germs are harmful, most of them are there to train people's immune system. One of the cause of having lots of allergies is over protecting one's self from bacteria and the likes. To make it simple, take this one for example: The more you protect yourself from the rain, the more chance you'll get flu and cold during rainy seasons.
