Interesting to see "kind" on there. Many businesspeople would argue that you have to be ruthless (though I don't like those kind of people).

Can't argue with that! I suppose I grew up in the wrong decade, when people in business were all about greed, aggression and slaughtering the competition. Perhaps that's why I'm not successful... I'm a pacifist.

Well, in my opinion, I would rather deal with a kind, and polite businessman over a mean and rude businessman. More people would like a kind businessman.

Oooh, good discussion!
I agree on all those except number 6: one of the best business entrepreneurs I know (who I do work for) is a University dropout. Some people just have a knack for business that no amount of education can provide (and conversely, I'm a graduate and don't have a clue!).
I'd also add two more: passion and focus. It's hard to succeed in business unless you LOVE what you're doing; it's hard to make a space for yourself in the market unless you're very focussed on what you're doing, to avoid rushing off in every direction and using up all your energy uselessly.
I suppose you could also add "concrete goals" to that list but it's sort of like focus: knowing what you want to achieve - in detail - is vital.

I think education is important but it doesn't have to be school education. Being educated by life (i.e. experience) can be just as good. You have to be "smart" in some way, whether it's book-learning or knowledge picked up first-hand.

As Spike stated above, yes though education is quite important many like Bill Gates himself does not have a formal education and yet look at him with all the Billions of dollars and Business sense.
Some can actually have a full completed education and still not be good entrepreneurs. What really is required are great people skills.
If one can mingle with people in savvy ways one will get very far. See that savvy part works well with business partners, investors and colleges.

I agree with you that good communication skill is required to ensure success. yes. It will be desirable to have fluency in English and interest to communicate in English. I have seen some businessmen successful though they do not talk in English all the time.
Personality - yes. presentable personality. One should not go in shabby dress. well dressed and not necessarily costly dresses.
Confidence is the first important requisite for ensuring success.
Graduation is nice. But for succeeding as a retail or whole sales person/contractor graduation is not necessary. Ability to meet and talk to people is required.
Besides this honesty and focus in what you want is also required to make one a successful business man.

Dear friend,
I feel those list do matter, but there are also other aspects one who know how to do business. Mostly in business it is seen that education is just a part but it is that knack that is more importance how to deal the things for better returns and higher output. May be there were times most business men in Mumbai were not much educated, still they do their business more better and earn much higher that those who are far well educated than them.

I agree with you on all of these qualities except for saying that a person should at least be a graduate to be a good business person. The reason that I say that is not a required quality to be a good businessperson is the fact that I've known a lot of people throughout my life that didn't even graduate from high school that have been very good self-employed business people. However, these people that I am referring to do have all of the other qualities that you've mentioned.

I am late joining in this discussion, but I want to add or delete some qualities enumerated by you, Surekha, and all those responded prior to this. We are on the topic of businessman and not an executive. Formal education need not be a must. In business parlance they site Henry Ford, as a giant. Likewise we have, as someone suggested Bill Gates. In India Dhirubhai Ambani the founder of RELIANCE empire was not highly educated. Uncanny anticipation, innovativeness, confidence, adventure, honesty, courteousness (not kindness), decent demeanor (need not be a model), basic linguistic communication skill (not necessary English, think of non-english speaking countries) and above all the so called man management skill. Because there is no business without people alongside, be it the customer or be it an employee.

That is a pretty good list to start out with. I would also like to add that you need to be honest but not too honest. What I mean by that is, you need to utilize enough of the facts where you come across as credible enough, but at the same time, there are times where you need to spin something that is mildly good to an extent to make it really great. Whether its a presentation for higher bosses or for clients of any type, you need to really be crafty about how much you say. It can't be all and out lies, but at the same time, telling the absolute truth has been known to bury people really bad. It is a tightrope that has to be walked rather carefully for sure.
Being able to learn from your mistakes is a good quality as well. There is no shame in making a mistake. However, you must question how good a person is that keeps making the same mistake over and over again. A good businessperson is someone who learns from their mistakes and is able to adapt, and try and figure out where they need to go next.

Hello Surekha, All the said qualities by you, for the successful business men/women are right/true for some extend, but are not compulsory to be a successful business men/women.Why? How? I will explain this point wise in a meaning way/manner. check it below.
1. Good Communication Skill:- Communication in the sense, good speaking/written skills. this is very essential/vital skill in business, an added advantage to the educated business men/women. Where as a layman don't have written skills, but some extend he can communicate in local language, and can also run successful Business.
2. Good Personality :- Good Personality in the sense, good looking, good body language, good outlook, all this stands for good personality, where as some people may not have good look personality, good body language and outlook, in this sense good personality is necessary, but it stands secondary.
3. English :- Speaking english can again people attention, and can make good impression. but it is not compulsory, as most of them don't know english, as they are from other medium of studies, and some of the not educated, finally english stands an added benefit, but not compulsory.
4. Confidence :- Is the most essential/vital feature for the successful business men among all the point mention above. Confidence is capsule that balance all the above factors mention above. With lac of confidence no business or business men can get success, so finally confidence is essential/vital among all the above factors.
5. Positive Thinking :- Positive thinking some where comes in to the category of confidence. yes right said that positive thinking is vital to run a successful business or be a successful business men/women.
6. Education :- Last but not least is Education, education is significant one, can do many innovative to get shape the business in successful and long run business. but when notice that most of them are illitrate, yet have good knowledge to start a business and at the same time confidence to make the shape of business successful and long run business.
Therefore, finally want to close the discussion with one significant factor not shown in the discussion above is investment, investment is also necessary to start a business and balance the business in times of it running into negative side, finally may get the business in to positive mode.
Great to be a part of this discussion, bye happy mylotting.

I think what you listed down here for me are secondary qualities only. For me, i observe and i noticed that most successful businessmen are RISK TAKER (driven by will power) and should have a background in business, just the basic "debit-credit" experience is a big help.

I think that the most important thing about being a business man is having a drive to succeed. Because it can be such a competitive business, there is no way that you would be able to make enough money to live on if you did not have this. Obviously you should be trustworthy, good at timekeeping, good at communicating with people and everything else that makes a person individual. However there is no real way of saying who would do well at such a career without knowing the individual person, and believe it or not it's proven that more attractive people do better in business than unattractive people.

Wow, it is so hard to definite a good businessman. A good businessman also have a personality of accept new ideas, and try new things to innovate in this market. He/she must be aggressive, and have the eyes for opportunities. Those are essential qualities for a good business person. Also, creative thinking is a must.

I personally think a business man should have to be persuasive too. They need to know how to get their own way and get what they want for the business. Of course they will need communication skills to do that too, but there are people who can communicate well, who are not persuasive enough for the job. They need to be positive or atleast make a good impression on people, they need to be likeable!
