Without Electricity for a day

I received a letter from the electricity company saying they are turning the electricity off for the day due to local works in the area. It make me stop think. We dont realise how much we actually rely on electricity until its gone. The more I think about it the more I realise how much I can't use. Have you experienced no electricity for a long period of time...

electric power has become a staple for a modern society, i've had a long power failure, precieved one of them is bored, going online, the battery runs out. want to watch football, but the tv screen is black, not black and white.. and to take a shower, i have to fetch water in conventional wells.. it is bad to live without electricity now..

We become board without electricity very quickly. It seems almost everything we do uses it...

yes, of course, electrical energy is easily converted into various other forms of energy, like kinetic energy, thermal energy, etc.

The thought of no electricity for even a little bit of time is not fun. We have lost electricity due to storms or outages many times. It is so hot here that the constant demand to AC our homes causes temporary blackouts. Just night before last they came on the TV with an urgent plea to turn off everything not being used in the house. What some don't realize is that we need to unplug items when not in use. Such as the toaster, or even our cell phone chargers. If plugged in they still pull a small amount of wattage to sit there!

Yes that is so true hardworker, leaving things plugged in while off still users power and not unplugging them can yes still drain power and also when power is shut off or surges happen it can damage products. The letter told us to unplugg items such as tv's etc so as to avoid damage.

Thanks goodness we haven't received a letter like that. But for a while there, a couple of summers ago, we had rolling blackouts. It was never for long though. It's about 100 degrees out here already and no electricity would be very unpleasant.

It is winter here at the moment for us. It would be worse in the summer time, the food would spoil very quickly and having no cooling would be hard. Having constent blackouts would be annoying. Not knowing when the next one will come and how long for... In our old place we used to get a lot due to overload of neighbours using airconditioners in the extream heat...

Yep, so far this summer (3 days into it) we've had one short blackout due to everyone's air conditioners being on. That's life, not complaining . . . yet!

Yes i did and it was for weeks. The first time was in the 1990s when a strong typhoon damaged almost all electricity posts and a big bridge. I remember extending my sem break to almost two months. The second one was about three years ago during a flood. It was a week we didn't have electricity and water supply. It sucks and I didn't wanna go back to those times again. I'm just lucky that my parents' house has a generator back up system to give us electricity. So we really didn't suffer much in the 1990s when there was no electricity for months. I think it was two months.

That would be hard to have no power for a week or more. Food wouldn't keep and not to have clean water... A generator is very handy to have, I remember my friend ran her holiday house off a generator. We have one we use for camping and I could use if I really needed to but I need to buy fuel for it....

It was a nightmare. The worst that I've been through and just the thought of it makes me cringe.

The moment I hear of power cut,I feel that I have a temperature from head to foot.Perhaps It is a conditioned reflex. It is very hot for us over here these days-over 30 degrees. We had a power failure for a day not long ago.We could neither turn on electric fan nor watch TV,so much for my surf Internet. We hardly stood the hot weather and had nothing to do then.

You feel anxiety about having no power. We rely on it so much, that when we don't have it we get anxious.

I felt rather board and just felt like I had to get out. It was depressing because it was so dark and cold. I found my self sitting in the car outside on my phone just to pass the time..

Yes I sure have! Last winter we had a really bad snow storm and it knocked out the electricity in a very large area that we went without electricity for almost a week! Hubby has a generator so we were holed up in the living room with a sheet on the wall to the hallway to keep the heat inside that one room and we were able to use certain things but not a whole lot or it would knock out the generator because it would be too much for it to handle. We watched tv, made dinner and even heated up some water to take baths with. It was an adventure but one I hope to never go through again.

Oh no I wouldn't want to live through that. It would have felt much longer than a week. Your very lucky that hubby had a generator to get you by, even if it was limited use..

Not in a really long time but I do remember at one time or another not receiving notice and the electricity going poof, due to area issues. Gosh we are so dependent on such basic needs as I panicked, thinking OMG what am I going to do. Years ago many made due and functioned well, but being that we have been raised and accustomed to having it, we somehow feel we can't function. I do hope the day they do turn it off for you that they get through the work quickly as I too would be missing it and needing it to come back quick. Plan your refrigerator items as no electricity will cause the frozen items to thaw.

Itis today and they gave the specific time for it to be off and to be turned back on... I am Thankful to know as I could take precautions for my food in the refigerator and my garage door. lol. I didn't want to be stuck in an not be able to get out... I made sure I charged up my phone and laptop to help pass some time lol. It is cold and dark as it is winter time here, so I'm definately missing the heater....It is worse when it just goes "poof" and off goes everything and you have no idea when it will come back on....

Hi Pinklilly, The last time I experienced the power being out for a long period of time is a few winters ago. We had an ice storm and were without power and heat for 4 days and nights. It was the worst time of my life. I stayed in bed and kept layers of clothing and wore my winter coat to bed. I froze. My feet hurt so bad from cold injury. Never want that again. We live in another house with a fireplace and gas heaters. So we won't freeze now.

Oh gosh PQ's that sounds really bad.. I definately wouldn't want to experience that... It is wise to have other types of heating for backup or just instead of electricity run.
