I'm working on my laptop and they are watching their shows on Disney channel or Nickelodeon and next thing ya know I'm starring at their show, watching and laughing. I have to stop paying attention. Most the stuff they watch is just too silly for me but I will admit I do laugh once in a while.
I usually have them take turns with who gets to pick the channels.
Do you watch their shows or make them watch yours?

Some of the television shows that my children watch are wonderful and I do actually enjoy watching them with my children. It is also very nice to be able to talk to them about what they're watching rather than just letting them watch it on their own and then not knowing what they're talking about when they mention things in conversation about the characters later on in the day. Most children's shows have adult humour, too, so it is very nice just to watch and see if this is the case for the shows that your children are watching.

It sounds like you are doing a really good job paying attention to your children and I hope it continues that way as they grow up.

All the time, I have a 16 yr. girl, a 13 yr old boy a 12 yr old boy and a 3 yr old girl, I find myself watching their shows all the time. My 16 yr old got me hooked on a secret life of an American teenager, i think that's the name or close enough that you know what I mean.
It seems that that my tv is always on some kid show, they fight over who gets to watch what. I made up a schedule of who gets to watch what at what time.
I do have a tv in my room but most of the time it is taken over to and than at night my husband has got that tv.

I have to admit that sometimes I do watch my daughters shows as I do like to be aware of what is popular for kids. I did ask her that she let us know what her friends are talking about so we all could be aware. Par for the course! Better to know what is out there and be able to deal with it effectively.
There are some shows that I don't have any problems with; Happy Days and to a lesser extent, Saved by the Bell because she will be dealing with issues as she gets older and I want for her to feel comfortable on coming to us when something bothers her. Already she does and I hope that'll continue.

I think that no matter what show is on, whether it be a kid show, a tween show, a young adult show, or an adult show, the TV will always garner our attention above all else. Usually, when I'm working on something like homework or projects, I find myself searching vainly for something, anything to distract me and what's more distracting than a yellow, square sponge and his pink, starry friend frolicking through the jellyfish field. So to answer your question, I watch whatever will give me the ultimate satisfaction in distraction whether it is my show or theirs.

No, I do not have any kids at home to watch with. I end up watching my husband's crime dramas. I do not watch much television. Oh, we watch game shows a lot, including "Are you Smarter than a Fifth Grader." It is easy to get distracted by television.

Sometimes I end up watching the shows with them, but not alot. I would probably end up watching it more if we had cablevision or satellite, then it would be new shows. But because we only watch vhs or dvds that we have in the house I have already seen them and they don't distract me too much.

Hi devideddi,
I often hear parents complaining about their children getting too much into TV kids' channel. If one stop the child from watching the other would beat or come upon with physical punishment.
In my view both of them are wrong ways to deal with the crisis. What I do with my child is to make him understand that the ray that comes out is not friendly to our eyes. And a prolonged watching might cause problem to his eyes and general health too.
But as I understand his child mind we allow him to watch tv for one and half hour. One hour between 3 pm and 4 pm and the half hour 10pm to 10.30. So far he is following the schedule. Do not know what would follow in future. But we are confident that he should not break away the roles set for him.
