Cats in a flat with no garden

How do all the mylotters feel about owning a cat if you don't have a garden and live in a small flat? I really want to get a pet and I really miss my cats from home, so am thinking about getting a cat. But is it really ok to have a cat in a flat if they can't really go outside? Is that fair on the cat or is it cruel? do any of you have cats that live in apartments and are they happy?

Cats don't have to be indoor/outdoor animals, and in our more moderon society it's best if they aren't. I've had several cats over my lifetime and they have all been indoor animals. They are just as happy and content in the apartment as they are anywhere else. Get a cat young enough, and it'll think of the apartment as its own privite forest. A cat can be just as happy being confined, but you have to take it slowly. When you first introduce the cat to the apartment, it'll probably be cerious and possibly want to run out. It's not because its not happy, far from it.... they just won't know right away your apartment is "home" and ceriousity causes them to atempt to venture out. When you first get your cat arrange to be home with him or her for a few days. Get him or her used to you, and slowly ease them into your work schedule. They will eventually adapt and get used to when you're home and when your not. And, you'll have no problem with it. Get a litter box and keep it clean. Cats don't like to use a dirty litter box. If the box is too dirty, they will find other means of using the restroom, usually on the carpet... tub... or even your bedding. So you must be diligent in keeping the box clean. Cats like to be clean.... and will groom themselves. Even though your cat will be an indoor cat, you must put flea protection on them monthly. flea egs can hide on your clothes and get brushed off into the carpet. So vacume at least once a week and treat the cat regardless of weather or not they're exposed to the outdoors or not. Prevention is key in keeping a healthy happy cat. If you can remember simple tips and tricks to caring for a cat you will not have a problem in keeping a cat happy indoors. they enjoy windows and are satified with just sunning themselves in front of them.

Should be just fine, but remember that if you adopt a cat, it is your responsibility to take care of it for the rest of its life. So you will be looking for pet friendly places for at LEAST the next 10 years, and I currently have a 20 year old cat.

hi bouncybug there are lots of kitties in animal shelters which dont know the out doors and wont miss the out doors. They only want nice owners, some stuff to play, a nice bed and a scratchpost and thats it. When we can afford to move from here as I wont have to work any more in 11 years we plan to get a kitty too. Its now forbidden in our apartment due to the renting contract but one day it will come true.
