My Grandfather wore his gold watch in the pocket of his waistcoat. He bought it in 1895, for $5.00 at a local jewellery store. The watch which keeps good time, was passed down to me by my Dad, and I've already passed it on to my oldest son. Rumor has it that watches are already passe. Cell-phones are in! I enjoy wearing my new Timex wrist-watch with a ten year battery. To me a watch is more fashionable than a cell-phone! Have you stopped wearing a watch in favor of a cell-phone?

Oh, that's the first time i have heard - ten year battery ! I would like that also for my watch. I still prefer to wear watch. That way, i can easily look at the time anytime i would want to. It's inconvenient to get your cellphone just to look for the time.

I've owned a few Casio digital watches in the past, the most recent one had a 10 year battery life indicated on the box,and the previous one is still going..the strap mount got broken so I couldn't replace it!

A ten year Battery is quite a stretch! I suppose digital technology keeps moving on. Can you imagine a forever battery? Perhaps I will never get to replace this ten year Battery. (I'll be 78 in October) Now that's a sobering thought!

ShepherdSpy, maybe you should find a way for it to be still used, even if the strap mount got broken. How about making it a pendant to your necklace? Barehugs, Well, you can have your watch inherited by your son or nephew maybe. Have it specifically indicated in your last will.

Oh, I'd still want a watch to tell time than a celphone. Only problem is, I had to take off my watch often when I used to work. So much so that it stopped or at least wasn't accurate anymore. So I opted to not wear a watch anymore at that time, and sadly that continued until now...

My wife was a Registered Nurse who worked in the 60's and 70's. At that time a nurse needed a watch to take a patients pulse. Because a wristwatch might not be sanitary, nurses were advised to wear a pin-on watch, pinned to the bib of their nurses uniform.

Ahh. Really? Interesting. I wonder if that's still the advice nowadays. I think all the nurses I've ever seen use wristwatches. =P

I never liked wearing watch anyway. Especially after I broke my wrist. It actually hurts to wear a watch for a long time. I got my first cell phone, at age 18, before I got my first watch, at around age 26 or 27. Watch I own now is Casio, g-shock. It's solar powered, battery is charged by solar, and it is atomic watch, which sets by itself 4 times a day. I wear it may be 3 - 4 times a week. I travel a lot due to my work & that's why I bought a watch. There are times when I have to travel to another time zone & I don't feel like setting my watch. It just does it automatically.

I got my watch through ebay. I don't buy expensive stuff through it but simple things, I do. I paid around $60 for the watch. I don't know about you but it was, & still is, a lot of money for me. But I decided to get it & it's been little over 3 years & it's been good to me.

I have stopped waring watches a long time ago. I have a talking clock by my side of the bed and of course I've got my cell phone. However, I didn't stop waring my watch because of my cell phone. I didn't want to distroy it because I often forgot I was waring it. Talking watches often aren't designed to be living in water, and if I constantly forgot it was on. I don't have that kind of money. And, like many cell phones keep time and the batteries last longer then those designed for watches. Though Watches are still good to have around too. You can't constantly keep pulling out your cell phone when trying to conduct business, just to check time or your schedule. (Though there are those geeks that do that)

If its important to you to be on time, that's all the excuse you need to wear a watch on your arm. I can't imagine pulling your cell phone out constantly to check the time.

Oh! your "talking Clock" is by the side of your bed! Mine would not be happy unless she was in the bed with me! She is lovely and quiet when she is sleeping. So much for married life!

Why can't you have both. I don't see a problem if you have both. Cell phone to make calls and the watch for the time.

We still have "The Speaking Clock" here in the UK...has this service been discontinued in some places?

No problem there, I do have both, but I didn't get the phone for the clock on it. And I didn't throw away my watch because of the clock on the phone. That's strange too, because I remember as a child, when the kitchen clock stopped, (because somebody forgot to wind it) we'd to call the telephone operator to get the time to set the clock.

I am not used into wearing watches until now. My husband does prefer having his watch with him than a mobile phone. It's good to know that you still have that "tradition" in you even during this techie time. I don't see anything wrong with people still prefers wearing their watches. The value has not gone down in market as well. So just bring your watch and mobile phone with you for a different purpose.

"A place for everything, and everything in it's place!" The place for my watch is on my arm. Its a nice tradition! I'm glad you feel this way!

Hi barehugs, I still wear my watch and I don't own a cell phone. I know that cell phones can be useful but I think that they are used far too much. Is it really necessary for someone to know where you are at all times? They are also very expensive to use here in Canada, although I hear it's not the same in parts of Europe and Asia. Blessings.

I have a cell phone, and the time on it is always right, but who wants to be bothered? I just bought a new Timex watch and I don't have to buy minutes to use it. Grandpa would have been amazed, if he could have seen my new Timex!

Hiya BH, That must be some watch to still be working like that. The one I have has had the battery replaced twice already in 16 months. Now you never know when the Battery is going to last for a year or two Days. I don´t use my mobile Phone to just know the time I prefer to wear a watch. I had to be without my watch for a week and I got used to not wearing it and when I put it back on afterwards I forgot to keep looking at it. I also did a lot of walking up and down from our room to the Kitchen to keep finding out the right time. For me mobile phones don´t replace watches. I love watches and I hope they never die out as such. So long live your Grandfather´s watch and mine too here´s to that.xxx

Hiya BH, Oh that does not matter what matters is that it still works wow. Who can say that nowadays that they have something like that and it´s still going? I still love to hear a watch ticking but not a clock as they sound too loud and can get on your nerves a bit. But a watch ticking is much more soothing for me at least anyway. Have a great Holiday over there.xxx

Care to sell the watch to me at $5? Haha just i'm only kidding. Anyway your grandfather must really be obsesse with it. Jusst like them , we are obsesse with the handphone. This is because the watch were INTERESTING in their era. But in our era, golden watch are would be branded as old compared to an iphone. So I use the cell-phone to check the time. I don't like having to tie the annoying strap on my wrist and waste time. Though its only a few seconds. Or am i just lazy?

The watch is a Family Heirloom, and much more valuable than its actual worth. My Grandfather who owned the watch, bought this farm where our family lives today, way back in 1905. We have lived here ever since. The road past the farm was named after our Family about 25 years ago.

Hi Thats so special that something that personally valuable has lasted so long in your family. Have you ever had it valued. Would be interesting to know, But $5 in those days would have been such a lot of money. I was never a watch person, I would always forget to put it on and then never look at it. opting to see the town clock or computer etc but once i got a mobile phone that was my clock. However, I have started wearing a watch now as you can get some really nice ones that compliment an outfit. It does make it easier not having to get my phone out all the time and i keep it 5 minutes fast in the hope i am not later anymore! it did take a while to train myself to look at it though!

Grandpa's watch is large and heavy, but runs well when wound and keeps time. I suppose my Grandpa had to work many days to earn $5.00 so he must have been very proud of his watch. Yes I think there is still a place for a watch!
