The Turkeys of our neighbor ate all my Seedlings! Leaving my Plants Leafless!

Hello To all Mylotters!
I came home from school today with a poignant reaction. I never expected that my mom is out while I am away - to school and no one would see my garden after me. Our neighbor happens to free their poultries out from their house once a month for general cleaning but I never expected today. No one had managed to keep my neighbor's turkeys out from my garden. They crawled and jumped over the barbed wire fence and they were very wise animals. They pecked my seedlings and left my plants leafless.
I am so sad...
But, I think, I can still manage to smile... :-)
hehehe

Hiya farmer,
You do have a really good character not getting angry or upset. Most would have blown their top to say the least.
Things like that happen. Does the neighbour know about it? Maybe they will be more careful next time.
Sorry about your seedlings though after all the effort it takes to try and grow them.
Could´nt you make the Fence stronger? You know so that they don´t get under again.
Hope it does not happen again.
Glad to see you can smile too. I think that I would be upset too quite frankly.xxx

Hi LovingAnAngelInstead,
Well, the damage has done and what can any thing be done with my neighbors? With their animals? Nothing. I know there's a little fault with them but I could not pin all the blame on to our neighbor. My fences was done and intended for bigger animals like Cow, Carabao, Goat and even Pigs for them not to get in my Vegetable Garden in our Backyard. Remember, it was a barbed wire and not a mesh wire. But, that's my next project, to put a mesh wire inside and a litle improvised gate made of wood's branches for me to get in.
A little damage like this one is not a big points being deducted from me of course. No, I won't be getting angry with my neighbors as I know they did not intend to do that. It will just create a gap between Me Myself, my Mom and their Family just in case. My Mom surely is more Considering than I. So, there would be no problem at all. Besides, their plants themselves suffered too. And I guess it is more worst than Ours. Yes, they would be more careful next time and I know that. They said sorry a couple of times to me. Texted my Mom and asked Sorry too and I almost feel shy. I can see how very compassionate they are as they offered me more seeds which is ready with them. They have Tomato Seeds, Green Bells, EggPlants, Various Kinds of Peppers and many more and they wanted to share all of those to me.
I hope too that this will not happen again.
And even if it will happen again, I will make sure that I am ready with it. My fences would be more stronger and those poulties would not get under again. I have a very nice banter inside - a man-liked with a bamboo frame for the poultries who get over too.
Thanks
Dennis

Hiya Farmer,
Ah point taken now I understand the problem as well you need a fence within another fence to protect all your seeds.
Yes the Neighbours have been very decent offering you some more Seeds that is very good of them.
Are you going to plant them if they give you some then.
I think they are decent too for saying sorry as they got loose and they obviously could not control them.
It´s like when the Horses and Bulls get loose here it´s because they have not got someone 24 hours watching them whereas with the Sheep they always have someone there thank goodness.
Come to think of it though savypat is right too because I imagine that these Birds can fly when given the chance and pretty high too.
It´s like the Storks we have here will raid a Farmer´s Field that is right next Door to them and you have never seen so many Storks together.
We were going past in the Car and we saw at least 100 of them on that Field and normally there are only about six of them that nest in an Electric Pylon next to the Field.
It´s as if they tell each other by some kind of thought thing what´s going on and they all turn up for a Banquet.
Storks usually live six or seven together in Pairs but never 100 at least not here.
I don´t know what the Farmer had got planted there as you could not see for all the Storks that covered the Field.
This Year he has planted again but I have not seen them go again to raid his Fields.
Must have had something special for them there that time.
Come to think of it is there not a plant that the Turkey does not like and maybe you could plant it around your Field you know something like that.
I am not sure what else could keep them out because if you have a very big field covering the top of your field would be quite a game for you would´nt it?
Suppose you have to take the chance and see what happens good luck next time.xxx

Hi Loving an Angel Instead,
I am not sure if those wading birds I use to see in our field are storks. We called them "can-na-way" in Ilocano and Ifugao - Philippine dialects. Those were migrating birds in search for foods. We have a rice and corn field too but we have a farming tenants managing them. Only a small Vegetable Garden that I used to manage which is very near from our home. At least that keeps me moving during weekends, offs from classes.

How about a turkey for a meal, instead of salad? Joke!
I am also peeved when my hard work goes to naught. Tell your neighbor about it. He should be responsible for the damages.

Hi EileenLeyva,
We only eat meat once or twice a week. Fresh, butchered at our backyard. We use to take meal with complete variety. I cannot say that the food we're taking is the most delicious food in our table every day. In fact, I am considering our food very simple and maybe it could be the food for the poor. hehehe
I am also peeved when my hard work goes to naught but it will not last long. In fact, our neighbor offered me more seedlings to be planted so every thing is well that ends well, Now.
Thanks
Dennis

Hi farmersson, my taste is very simple, too, and I could eat fried bell peppers, steamed or raw carrots, poached eggs, grilled egg plants, or onion soup with gusto. I always contend that I am much better off if I live in some rural area and I have my own vegetable garden and chickens and goats. That would be heaven here on earth. But I must confess that I couldn't look at chickens being butchered, much so pigs nor goats. My daughters and I are trying to refrain from eating meat....

You will have to replant that garden, this time see if you can get a bit of chicken wiwre to protect your seedlings. We have wild turkeys and we have to send the dog to chase them away, but we also fence our garden with a very high fence. 10 feet high. They can fly over that but with the dogs around they stay away.

Hi LetranKnight,
Our place is very peaceful I can say. There were some unscrupulous people at some places here in Ifugao before especially in Lamu, the first town after the province of Nueva Vizcaya. But, Nowadays, it is not being ordinarilly encountered anymore. Or, maybe, they were gone since the Government had tightened our Security. This town is quite bigger and more populated compared to other towns here in Ifugao since Big Business Establishments including Schools and Colleges are here. Considering the fact that it is a Valley and because of its Natural Depression, People would love to stay in this place.
Regarding my plants, it would take them at least a week for them to cope up. Their leaves seem to start growing again and their stems seem to germinate - like my Okras. I don't know why this kind of animal eat every green thing LOL. I think they are a little bit greedier than goats LOL...and the only thing that they can't eat perhaps is my "dahon ng chinelas" hehehe
Thanks Letran!

Hi thefarmersson and a warm welcome to myLot.
Oh how sad that the turkeys managed to get in. Though I am glad they did not get caught up with the barbed wire. That would have been so dangerous for them.
On a side note you seem to be a very positive young man, and I am glad you managed to smile regardless of the loss. Means you look at the positive side of occurrences. I hope the plants will continue to re-grow and then it will be brighter smiles after all that has been done. Do tell the neighbors to be a bit more careful as their turkeys can get hurt by being caught on the wire and or what if they do so to another house and someone takes revenge and kill them all. That would be sad.

Hi HardWorkingGirl,
Sadly there were dozens of Turkey Dams with their Jakes and Jennies who had managed to get inside my Garden. There were 3 lines of barbed wires being nailed strongly at every 5 steps away on every timber-posts. And yes, the spaces between each barbed wire lines were wide enough for the turkeys to get in. They won't be caught up by the barbed wire if they budge under. They could even jump over the third line without spreading their wings. But if, just in case, they were not fortuante enough to get inside, and get caught by the barbed wires, probably, we've had a Turkey Fiesta then. LOL. Kidding aside... hehehe.
Thank you so much for the side note you had written here. Wow.
Well, I think, regardless of the situation, whether during the times of loss or defeat, we always have the choice to be joyful, to be thankful. hehehe. Although, honestly, it is hard to do at times in times of Big Losses. But if we concentrate on the possitive sides, If we focus on the lessons we learn, if we realize how fortunate we are compared to others, then we have enough reasons to be happy. My parents say, "The happiness of our life depends upon the quality of our thoughts". To the way we react to situations. It is normal to feel sad or be sad at times but I would not dwell or we should not dwell so much with that unpleasant feeling. Every minute that we choose to be unhappy only aggravates the misery and deprives us of the joy we should have felt in every minute. Also, "A happy heart makes the face cheerful, but heartache crushes the spirit". Wow,got a lot of "quotes" here.. hehehe.. It's because am a Christian and my Favorite Teacher happens to be my Catechist Teacher during my Primary Grades and so, I have my old notes Plenty of Quotes...
My plants will continue to grow as we still have a very favorable weather condition here. Except the seedlings which they have been pecked and totally uprooted. Perhaps swallowed their fresh and young stems. Sold out. hmmm Yummy LOL.
I hope no one from our neighbors would do the revenge thing if same thing will happen to them. Anyway, this only happens once in a blue moon and I really think that people from my Bario are okay...
Thanks
Dennis

Wow!
We're also Farmers and we have rice, corn, banana, coffee, root crops, apples, strawberries and citrus. These are the main source of livelihood here in our village. With our village' lush and abundant flora and fauna, viariety of trees like narra, apitong, binwang and alumit are abundant in the forest. Hunting of wild animals like boars and deer are also part of the way of our life especially those who belongs to our minorities like ifugaos and igorots. With the influx of the Igorots from the Cordillera, the gold panning has been introduced in our village and became an alternative source of our income. Panning is known as traditional type of small scale mining.
My friend, the animals who eats plants do get energy and that is I think a valid reason for the turkeys of your neighbors to get loose. I feel self pity because you have to start planting your seeds all over again, wait till they become seedlings and if you will be blessed to have a nice whether at that time, you will be able to plant those siblings. But, what if somebody out from nowhere wants to steal your plants, your garden, farm, house and lot, personal properties forever? Isn't it a sin and against God's rule? Would you want to face this dilemma? What I am talking exactly is about the two large scale mining that are under the operations of mineral extraction in our village. They wants us to go forcibly and we do not have any other options but to sale our properties to them. This operation was approved by the government during arroyo's administration. There were also violations that they have done to us and we have decided that giving up will be our conclusion. Noone will help us except ourselves.. We better go..
