Hi. I have a nephew who is only 9years old and he used to be... less violent. After my cousin bought him a psp console along with the game Grand Theft Auto which is basically a game that allows you to buy weapon, drive cars and shot people for no reason and his mother approves it. Now he has become extremely violent and always spar with his 13year old brother. Their house became a battle arena ever since. I was wondering. Is this just a coincidence or could this be the result of the video game?

In my opinion video game doesn't contribute to the violent behavior of children but it can make a child use both his/her left and right side of the brain. Violent came way before video games ever invented. It turn out that children who play video games will be more creative and thinks better in some sense. Anyway, your nephew might facing some "growing up" stage like any other children experienced. But one thing for sure, video games can be addicted.

I think it can cause bad behavior in children. My nephews play games with violence and cursing in it and then get in trouble when they physically fight each other (Gee, I wonder why they would do that). Their parents apparently don't realize they are being hypocrites by letting them play these types of games and expecting them not to try it in real life...Hello? They are kids. They think this is fun and this is acceptable now. The other day my nephew cursed for the first time and his mother about flipped! In my head I was thinking I'm not surprised listening to the video game cursing all the time. I think if you let the children play these games they are going to try to copy things at some point...

True true. I think all parents that allow their children to play such video games with mature content, coarse language, etc,etc think that its merely a game and will not influence the child's thinking.

Hi there, I am familiar with the game you are talking about and i dont really think it is aimed at children his age but i would have to say this isn't the only boy that i know of playing it. I don't think it sends a good message to the kids, but i also think its the parents job to explain whats real and whats fake, whats acceptable and whats for entertainment purposes. Every parent will choose a different way to teach their children these lessons and for some that is taking the game away where as for others it's having to explain the world your children our shown. I know he wouldn't be the only boy in his school playing that game, but as you have noticed a change in his behaviour as a family member maybe its a contributing factor. I dont think video games are the only influence we should worry about, there are movies, TV, school, friends and the internet to name a few most children are already exposed to. We can't cotton wool our children forever but i think that monitoring which games our children are playing and governing the internet sites they visit is a step in the right direction.

I agree with you. No child at that age should be allowed to play such games. Furthermore adults shouldn't support it either. LOL, I like how you make killing random people in video games as a form of entertainment. Anyway, it's true that any surrounding with things that are not suitable for children should not even be revealed to them.

Correlation is not causation. No, I do not believe that video games are to blame. They may contribute to beliefs the child holds, but I believe that there are many other environmental factors which come into play. If he sees this type of behavior and he is not told otherwise, then it is no surprise that he should believe that this is acceptable, but what else is going on? What does he hear his parents and other people telling him? What does he see his parents and other people he comes into contact with? What does he see on television?

Wow. What a strong point. And filled with many rhetorical questions. I can't argue with what you have said. You left me speechless.

I think in a way game is responsible, so far am a gamer myself i play games all the time, video games give a feeling of delusional giving a sense of freedom, what you cant do in real life you can do it in game. Game sure can effect a persons mind and more violent and abusive the game the children learn from it, i suggest you dont give a chance for him to purchase violence or battle game till the age 18, as you can see children below this age are bound to repeat what they play in game and take it as a thrill.

I don't think they cause it. it's more likely that children inclined to be violent will chose violent games rather than non violent ones. but I really don't think a nine year old should be playing GTA. there's a lot of ways in which it is unsuitable for children.

I do think that there is a link between video games and the bad behavior in children. I wouldn't say that video games necessarily causes this bad behavior, but there is certainly a link between the two, at very least.

Humm Well I can say not exactly video games make childrens violent but their aggressive nature comes when they are quite addicted to the game. When we make them far away from games such kind of behaviors is common to see in childrens, also apart from that violent behavior can come when children wants to imitate the gaming behavior in real life. And now i can say that games such as GTA can make children violent always make a close watch of what kind of games your childrens are playing there are age limit given behind the gaming cover that so and so games should be playable by such age limits, so before buying a game for your kid always look on the age limit, thus concluding on the topic make sure your kids play the right game video games not contribute to bad behavior but the type of games which we play they surely make behaviors violent.

I would think so. Because from where else will your cousin have picked up his violent streak? Studies have also said that violent video games have a negative effect in kids because they play pretend after.

WITHOUT other overt or covert influence, violent games and games that teach no proper values will tend to stick to the mind and the emotion of the player. If the player is a child, he will not have learned yet the art and logical flow of QUESTIONING what s/he has just seen and done even vicariously. S/He may not even know how to formulate the question/s. The game most likely does not provide him/her moral guidance. Thus the sense impressions and vicarious experience created by the video game will lodge in his/her mind and emotions. Eventually this will come out in behavior, language, and habits that may cause grief to society. Why are these kinds of games proliferating anyway?
