My son and his wife borrow alot of things from me. Last year I bought two new beach towels. I already had a beach towel blanket..but wanted two extra's to keep at our camper as we have a pool there and I wanted them in case we have guests that forget theirs. Well they went on vacation last summer and borrowed them as they went to a water park and wanted to make sure they always had dry towels. Now it's a year later and I have asked for them back about four times. I am going to the lake tomorrow and would have loved to have a beach towel with me but nope...they are all at their house! Do you borrow things and don't return them? Do you have something right now in your house that someone lent you and expected you to return?

None for me. It's my siblings who do this actually. Even though they borrow small things, they will not return it to where they got it. They just leave it somewhere around our house. Even it's just small things, it really makes me mad because it always ends up to me having to retrieve my own things.

I rarely borrow things, but if I do, I strive to return or replace right away. So, other than library books, I have nothing borrowed here now.
So, what does your son/wife say when you tell them you need these towels? DO they make excuses? Or say they will bring them over and then forget?

Oh good, so you got them back in time..Maybe for Christmas you can buy them some towels, that way they won't have to borrow yours..

I am sure many times I have borrowed something and forgot to give it back, but that was yrs. ago and I think it is important especially if reminded to return it. Even when it comes to someone from your family like this when you asked they could have the decency to do so. Sounds like you might have to go buy some New ones and then make sure and keep them hidden the next time the guests ever want to come around. It would have been nice if they could have bought some last yr. instead of borrowing yours to never return them as well.

Like you, when someone borrows something from me I expect it returned...preferably ASAP! When I borrow something I try to return it is as good of shape as it was when I borrowed it. If it's something like a mower....full it back up with gas. It aggravates me when someone borrows something and then is slow to return it or we have to fix it after they're done with it. I'm reluctant to lend things out for those reasons.

I think I'd be thinking twice before I'd let either of them borrow anything from me again until they learn to return the things they've borrowed and 'kept'! Shame on your son and dil! I can't imagine doing that to my parents! No way! They taught us to return everything that we borrow and if we break it, we're to get it fixed before returning it or replace it. Also we're to return the item in better shape than how we borrowed it. For an example, if we borrow someone's car, we're to wash it and fill it up with gas as a way to say thank you for letting me borrow it.

Absolutely not. I borrowed out a book to someone, emphasizing the importance of its return. She assured me it would definitely be returned. Not only did she loose it she didn't offer to replace it or pay for it. Worse yet she acted like it was no big deal! The lesson? I have nothing, no tools, no DVDs, no books, nothing. My husband had something returned that was broken in the meantime. I will even lie and say the item is borrowed and needs to be returned.
When we moved into this neighborhood people couldn't wait to "borrow" our muscle bound sons to the point they weren't getting their chores done at home. Can you tell this irritates the heck out of me?

The only person hubby and I will lend to or borrow from is my mother, and we always return what we borrow! If your daughter won't return your stuff, don't lend to her anymore!

That gets on my nerves too. I hate to lend anything out anymore because I am tired of not getting it back or it is returned in bad condition. I never borrow from people either.

I really don't like it when people do that. When I borrow something, I give it back to the person who lent it to me. Sometimes, it might be a while before I am able to give it back, but I will still try to give it back to the owner within a reasonable amount of time. I don't think that it's right to hang on to something that isn't yours. I don't think that it's the right thing to do, and that's why I don't do it.

I used to have this problem with some of my friends, as I gave things out to people far too easily. However, because I lost a lot of things (particularly clothes) by doing this, I have since decided that it is not worth the hassle, so I keep a note of everything that has been lent to people and I will tell them when I want them back, and will then contact them when that day comes to remind them that they said that they would have the item back to me that day. If somebody is being nice enough to lend some of their belongings to you, the least that you can do is give them back on the date that you both agreed at the beginning of the loan.

I once experienced that, but I haven't tried to asked it back. I am shy on her behalf, lol. So the next time she borrowed me another stuff again, I choose the least liked among my others stuffs and told her, it's yours.

I don't borrow too much because I don't like that feeling I get until it's returned. So, no I don't have anything in my house that belongs to someone else right now, thank God! I don't like it when other people borrow things from me and don't return them. If your nice enough to let someone borrow something they should be nice enough to return it. =)

Good morning poor Jillhill I am sorry your folks wont return what they borrowed from you. I am not like this if I borrow anything at all I will give it back as soon as its not needed any mroe and will also make sure its in good condition when I return it. For example your beach towels would be washed and also ironed and back in your closet for a long time now.

Hi jillhill! I'm a newbie here! :)
No offense to your son and your daughter-in-law, but that's one thing I really really hate. I do not have anything in my stuff that is owned by anyone bec if I borrow something I always make a promise to the owner when I will return their property and if for some reason I fail to give it back on that day, I approach the owner and inform him that I still need it and can't find a way to return it immidiately then I ask for forgiveness. That's for the sake of ethics.
This is just my opinion, not because you're relatives, they can borrow anything they want from you without the intention to return what they have borrowed on time. It's not far from "stealing". I guess you should talk to your son about that.
