So You Say You Are Cautious… Are You Really?

Hackers are waiting for you - Just hand-over the information!

This has been on my mind for quite a few weeks and was inspired by recent activity. A dear friend here on myLot had their Facebook account hacked and literally taken over. Along with the hacking came hijacking and complete takeover of another site of the member. I tried to help to get the FB account back but due to language barrier the member could not understand. I realized I was a friend on the other site, for which I went ahead to test by sending a PM message on the other site. The actual hacker responded back to me, saying "yeah I got it!" My first thought is that my friend would have never responded this way. Thereafter the hacker changed my friend’s full name and details to his but still has my friend’s picture as his as well as all of her excellent articles. Reason for my discussion is that a few weeks ago I saw a discussion here about how we all could earn some descent money with a site. Of course being the researcher that I am. I went ahead and searched and though the member is supposedly a very honest one here, there on the site there was absolutely nothing current since 2009! Amazing on how another close friend here was also at the very same moment was searching as well. Whereas he too found that the site was not legit, and that the member has no absolute activity at the site. Both of us separately and unknowing one another was researching found out the illegitimacy of that site within a few minutes. The point of my discussion is that ALL of us say daily that we are careful but are we really?? Many will respond YES, they are or that they know better, however during that discussion before it was deleted, about the site, I can’t begin to tell you how many were eager, in fact loads of pages of members eager for the referral link and wanting to sign-up, even the smartest and most internet savvy of them all. Therefore, mylothian’s I still have the hacker listed as my friend on the other site, as I am trying to get the account back to the friend. My purpose today is to PLEASE stop and think, there are no free rides and some high consequences while being enticed! My question to you is are you really cautious or does the thought of making money overtake our thoughts? Hackers do not discriminate and are always willing to take your information and your earnings, all you have to do is give it to them. Are you willing? Please view this as “A public Service Announcement”).

I am going to have to admit that I do sometimes get swept away in the enthusiasm of the moment. I should not. I have not gotten hacked, but I have found I signed up for a program that I can only earn from if I get referrals. In fact I am a member of two such sites. We do need to be careful, I totally agree. On the other hand, certain people, like you, or MysD, I would sign up for , if it was something I could do, because I trust you. I have joined a game site a friend found through here, and because of her reputation with me, I did not even think twice. Some sites, while not scams, do have growing pains as well. You and I are members of at least one like that.

@GG it is okay to be swept by enthusiasm, there is nothing wrong with trying to sign-up with sites if it means one can earn for their efforts. The point really is that yes, apply the same efforts and enthusiasm by taking the efforts and researching. It does not take very long to find out that a site is not genuine. Though I personally would never entice anyone with a new site I joined because my reputation, not only as a member but as a human being would be at my own stake. I could not live with me thinking I would hurt anyone, especially a dear friend. Sadly, this has really bothered me because many were so eager.

Thank you GG for that comment and for trusting that the sites that I might reccomend are legitimate As often happens, they are when I join them but then later they turn sour

So true mysd, I suppose there is a difference. We do not solicit sites we ourselves are unsure of. I know that if we encounter a site and place a banner and or referral link in my profile, we do give enough information about the site we possibly can. we then continually try and put payment proofs so substantiate the to date validity. We can not control the ones that go scam later. Moral basically is that research and finding out is of importance, before signing up to any site. If we do so at our own risk then we must be prepared for any bad outcomes.

Hi HWG.. I am not that cautious before but due to non-stop information coming in and out of mylot, I became aware of security with regards to my accounts. Since I read one of the discussions, I changed my password and after that, I was being logged out automatically even for a few minutes of being idle here. That was so irritating sometimes but can handle it for security's sake. I wish hackers will stop doing those kind.

Adnileb, you must be super cautious today, tomorrow and in the future. There is no such thing as get paid for doing absolutely nothing. There are many like me who can be enticed, but commonsense should always kick in FIRST! No one online is willing to give anything. We have to treat all money making sites like human diseases. In the medical field we are told that we treat everyone as a walking disease as we never know when that persons themselves are unaware of having a disease. Therefore, gloves are required while handling each and every patient. Therefore, any online site must be look at this way. One needs to research, research and most important be careful.

Yes, I am cautious but ONLY because I have lived long enough to know that there is no free lunch, everything has a price and you never get something for nothing. If something seems too good to be true it probably is too good to be true. I've always been cautious about personal details on the internet but have also learned that anyone that offers me a $15 Walmart gift certificate just for voting "Coke or Pepsi" wants something from me that I don't want to give in exchange for that "prize". If someone wants to teach me to make hundreds of dollars a day in just an hour, for the low price of just $59.95 I already know their secret--make people think they can get something without much effort and you'll be rich! But I can see where people would have a sense of urgency about making some money and throw caution to the wind. It's a grim time financially and every penny counts.

@stine, you are humorous today, I hope some people wake up and come play as well. I am past the point, I think of sending money, but I should be like dragon and keep my private info even more private than I have been. I do have a pay as you go cell phone, and I will at times give that number out, as I never answer it anyway, if I am being offered something that I reasonably can expect to get. It sure will not be a $1000 gift card, though. I agree about the sense of urgency.

Yes we have been around the block and can sniff scam in an instant. Need certainly does take a role in making quick and snappy decisions. There is not enough caution out in the internet world today. I can see it daily here where, including me would love to make some easy money. However, that easy does come with a price. Therefore, taking sometime to research is very important. If one could not make the money yesterday, a few more minutes without it today, can actually save efforts but most importantly their identities! It is by hindsight pretty funny, but not sure that it continues to be fun once hacked though.

I think we all become too comfortable on the internet period. I can say that I am probably not as cautious as I should have been in the past. I have not recently joined any different sites or used any referrals other than from people I have had an online dialogue with for some time. I do try to be cautious but you make a good point that we do all let our guard slip.

Hi Shellyann, We simply have to treat it like our worse enemy and figure out if in fact an offer is truly an offer or someone out to get what they can get. So true we all do let our guard slip. Funny recently I received a pm from member asking me to join a site that went scam two months before the member asked. My thoughts is sometimes, some of us really need the money and forget that it is just as important as offline life we just can't rely on what someone says. Thanks for responding.

Friend nice discussion and I have seen your discussion after long time. But friend I understand first two paragraph but after that pleas explain me what is there. Actual if your discussion is that we are taking the caution or not for secure our account then since last 3 months I take caution about my account and change the password in every 15 days. Because I lost more on net even my mturk account is also deleted and in that account my 20 dollar is earned. So now we cant give next time chance for hacker. Thanks to help me everytime.

Hi surekha What the point of the discussion is that we cannot easily trust no matter who says, there is a site you can make money. We have to always do our OWN research. Research means, go online and read and find payment proofs, read positive reviews, and read negative reviews. Weigh the positive with the negatives and then contact trustworthy friends and ask several questions. Never trust anyone who says sign up and you can earn. I am still helping you and will contact you soon with instructions. I am sorry you lost your mturk earnings. That is sad especially since I know you are a very diligent and hardworking woman. I will have someone else help us to get your account back. I think about you daily and always worried if you are safe online.

I actually learned that the hard way because I had my gmail account hacked and that individual went on to take over my neobux account and my alertpay account. I was close to $4 on the neobux account and the person took $100 from my alertpay account and attempted to take $200 more but I didn't put money into the funding account so that was canceled. I have created new accounts for both and I have recovered my gmail account, although it was hacked several time since then (and I thought it was today since the saved password didn't work). Now I change the password on my gmail account often and I avoid signing up for any kind of things unless friends have actually told me they got paid from a site.

Hi Deb, Oh gosh I am sorry to hear you were hacked this way and someone got away with your hard earn monies. It certainly is a hard lesson to learn. The idea of course is to learn and not continually put ourselves at risk. Shame really because the discussion I saw here was loaded with many very eager to sign up. I definitely am not mocking those that wanted to sign up but more of being sad that it is quite easy to be in this situation when commonsense does not kick in. Sure we are all at risk, but if we know that offline we certainly do not list our demographics to the first person that asks, I am just wondering why many, knowing that it is dangerous online are so abt to doing so. Do also request that your friends show you proof, if they want you as a referral they at least would be willing into doing so. See friends could have been enticed by friends of friends. So it is like a vicious chain at times, no one should be offended when asked for the proof of payment, is my thought. Thanks for responding.

I'm to a point where I don't sign up for anything any more. I don't trust anyone. The few times recently that I have signed up it was with someone who had done good things for me and I hope that works out. I don't really have time for this any more so I just come into mylot and a few sites that pay fairly well and don't worry about all the sites people want me to join.

I am same as you where I have refrained from any further sign ups. To a sense it makes sense anyways because applying my time to even lower paying sites, I could actually do it here and Viola, I earn more. lol Thanks so much for responding and wishing you a wonderful day.

I think that a lot of people need to be much more careful with who they give their information to online. When I am signing up to a new website, I will ensure that there are payment proofs available, or I won't join up. I will wait for other people to do it first. Many people set up a website that claims that people can earn money, when they can't. They just use your email address and password to take all of your other online accounts. The amount of people who use the same email address and password for everything is astonishing, and we need to be much more careful because once we sign up to a website with a certain password, we are basically giving that information to the owners of the website; who are not always genuinely good people.

Thank you GemmaR This is exactly how my friend lost not just her article writing site but many other sites too. She used the same simple password and once hacked on Facebook all else was history. You are right we need to treat online activity far more cautious these days then we actually do offline. Offline we do not give out information freely, therefore stricter principals need to be applied.

I am sorry for your friend. I view myself as a technological illiterate, so I did not join too many sites, even when they say you can earn from it. That's exactly how I felt when something is not right and when I had to fill in so many information about myself on a site. I would then just ignore it and close the site. Does not worth to disclose our personal information on a certain site. I do not join FB, but I always told friend to beware and don't post too many pictures and information on it. Do they listen? Nope, they are eager to show off their best pictures and always update their whereabout and doing what at the time...

Hi Jennyze I know what you mean, as I do feel the same way. Anytime I have entered a site I will stare at the account page debating if I should enter my information or not. I will then stop for a moment and think twice. We simply can't be too safe anymore as the hackers are getting so much more savvy these days. There was one time I entered my password here and I got a failure notice and my heart started to race, though funny after I realized I entered it incorrectly I was really scared. Main point is to act fast immediately knowing that we have been hacked, as the more time we wait the less chance of recovering.

We do need to be careful when signing up for any sites. I know that I am being cautious but how these hackers work, we really do not know. I only sign up for those sites that I hear about that is legitimate and that friends recommended.
• United States
4 Jul 11
Hi Jlyn Yes it is always a good idea to follow what is recommended by friends, but never be afraid to ask the friend for consistent payment proofs too. If they want you as a referral they should have no problem showing them. Afterall, they will be earning from your activity, therefore a bit of work is not bad. lol Main point really is that if ever hacked in any way, that we act asap, and not by discussing openly as then we become vulnerable to other hackers and or allow time to lapse where it then maybe too late to recover any account back. Therefore, research thoroughly on the affected site itself and contact support and pester them to no end. I do hope you are feeling better from the chicken pox. I remember recently how sick you felt. Hope all is cleared now and you are doing much better.

Hi sjvg! There will never be full proof ways, hackers are spending their lives to get at all of our information. Do always remember though that if ever, and many blessings dear that this never happens, but if so act asap. If ever there is a time, and you are unsure of how to go about it. ONLY turn to your most trusty internet savvy friends and asks for help. Discussing it in discussions here makes one more vulnerable because many will unintentionally guide you wrong. I saw this happening before my own eyes and because of language barrier I could not help her quickly. Keeping your passwords safe is always a plus. Also do try to make sure that you have any email with a verified secondary email address. Even if it is an email you do not use. Reason is that way if someone takes over your email with the secondary address verified and listed you will get an immediate email that your passwords were changed.

Hi parisfame and welcome to myLot. I am glad to hear that you make a second attempt at being cautious. It is quite important to remember that not everything free, is actually free. Though some sites you do not have to pay a fee, there are some very dangerous one who can take your information and re-sell it or some sort of obvious dealing. We can no longer just go on what we read anymore from the net. We do have to research first. Really glad to hear you second guess and are more cautious. See you around the Lot!

I think when I first starting going online I was far more naive than I am now. When you actually think you can make a few extra dollars and you get referred by someone you think "well heck, if they can do it so can I." Of course, name scams later, I no longer think that way. I have had my email account hacked before, but I was lucky to have caught it very quickly before any damage was done. I try to be cautious but sometimes everyone slips...has a weak moment I guess. I know when I signed up here at MyLot, I wasn't even careful about picking out my avatar name...but again, I guess I just didn't know any better at the time. I have since learned.

Hi gdesjardin Trial and error is really how we learn. I am glad you have been able to recover your email account quickly and got it off the hands of a hacker. You right none of us are free of hacker situations, but we just simply need to always think twice. Sadly it is occurring to many very new users and or way too trusting type members. Anytime anyone asks you or me to sign up with something we need to request consistent payment proofs. The person referring cannot be upset after all they will be earning from our activity. Stay safe and make sure you pass the word that none of us are truly safe and we do need to be careful. Thanks so much for the response.

For me, I tend to think that when it comes to trying to make money online, I am actually overly cautious. I am only a member of a couple of sites because of the fact that I will only work on a site that I find to be trusted based on the reviews of other people and also how long the site has been active. I knew for a long time that I wanted to write articles, but it took me a full six months to decide on what site to use because I wanted to make sure that I was in no way wasting my time.

I must admit that I am over the feeling of 'making money online'. I've realized that for the time I have, and whatever efforts I make, I am sure to make more if I concentrated on my offline projects. But that doesn't exempt me from doing careless things online. I try to be careful, and yet there is always that fear that I've gone careless in uploading my personal information to whatever site I belong to. Just the other day, I've sent somebody my credit card number. It turns out, this guy is on vacation! So, until he gets my email, and the sale goes through, I have my credit card information in internet-limbo. Now that's not being to cautious on my part!

In all honesty, me too, as far as over the feeling of making money online. I do okay with some sites but more like with a private publisher. I too feel as you where offline is definitely the better route when it comes to earning money. As I tell the many, that making extra money, can only be defined if one has loads to begin with. As it can't be considered extra unless one already has lots. Sorry to hear about your credit card issue and do hope all works out with it, but am sure if not you can easily get pretty much anything reversed from the credit card company later, it is just the whole of not knowing and or later having to deal with the back and forth paperwork. Yes it always a fear because we just don't know anymore if anyone and even a company is on the up and up anymore.

Although I know that hackers exist, I myself loose track of what is truly important. I have never has my FaceBook or any other site hacked, I know it still is very possible for that to happen. I know a few people who know how to get into what they call the back door, but they are not interested in stealing someones identity. Unfortunately, this is something that will always be a threat to all onliner's because when these people want something they will always find a way. I know that FaceBook has updated their security many times but like I said, the hacker always fins new ways to keep up with the changes. I agree 100 percent, stay on top of what you do online.

I have to be honest. On occasion, I will send something over the internet. Whether it be to apply for a job or check account standings. I often have a lapse in judgement and give information I probably shouldn't. I think to myself later. "Why did I just do that?" On some occasions I will go back and delete my information. However, I know the damage is already done. I hope your friend gets their site back to normal and hopefully in the process the hacker can be caught. That might be 1 less person we would need to worry about for awhile. I know that this person will be right back at it as soon as they can though. Best Wishes!
