I traveled around the world on Qantas and Virgin Atlantic. I paid around £1000 for my route which was London-Los Angeles-Hawaii-Fiji-Sydney-Adelaide overland Cairns-Darwin-Singapore-London. I did a side trip from Singapore over to Sumatra and down Malaysia. I was 20 years old when I left on that fantastic trip.
Years later at 29 years old I got a special fare on Air New Zealand for just £800. My route was London-Los Angeles-French Poynesia-Cook Islands-Auckland-Christchurch overland Auckland-Samoa-Los Angeles-London.
Start at an economical starting point like London, New York or Los Angeles. Have a working holiday if you can get a casual work visa. Stay at youth hostels or camp in a tent. Do some journeys overland to save on airport tax.
For example routes:
London-Bangkok-Sydney-Los Angeles-London
London-Singapore-Hong Kong-Melbourne-Los Angeles- London
Try Air New Zealand, Virgin Atlantic and Silk Air on The World Escapade. Some countries are cheap so concentrate on seeing those. Major cities can be pricey so it is best to avoid them except for a couple of days.
