Are smart phones worth it?

My cell phone plan is eligible for an upgrade. Right now I just have an env3. It's a "feature phone". It has an okay camera and I can do what I need to do on it. Now that I can upgrade I'm not sure what to get. I was looking at the smart phones and while there are 400 reviews and it got 3 or 4 stars, all I can see is the bad reviews that say about freezing and stuff like that. I'm considering a blackberry. I can't really afford the iphone, even with the discount for upgrading it's almost 200. What would you recommend?

Personally I wouldn't upgrade if I had a phone that fit my needs. It doesn't seem worth it to me. Why spend money you don't have just because you're eldgable for an upgrade? If the phone meets your needs then that should be good enough. However, if it was looking like it might fall apart then upgrade.
However should you spend the money, buy a phone that meets your needs. There is no reason to go over-the-top if you don't have to. The hot new thing may look attractive, but you have to decide for yourself if the "hot new thing" will meet all your needs. For me i had no other choice. My current phone (despite working well) did n't meet my needs.
I'm blind, and my limited eyesite could go at any moment. I use screen reading technology for everything I do. The android 1.6 platform introduced screen reading technology for the Android OS without having to download ten different aps from the Android Market. While the aps were free, the more aps you load on a phone the slower the performence. Now with Android 2.2, I don't have to download anything from market. The technology is bulit-in and I can use my cell phone as a Wi-Fi hotspot a technology I'm playing with. If it works out, I can elminate my internet bill.... but I'm getting off-topic.
The point I'm trying to make is the phone doesn't have to be overly complicated. The phone just has to have the capability to meet your spific needs. Anything else is kind of pointless.

The android was too complicated for my daughter. She had 30 days to change phones so she changed to the iPhone. I have an iPhone also. It does everything my laptop does. I love it. I'm glad there is technology for people with vision problems.

Okay I love cellphones, and reading and seeing all the new technology regarding them. About 3 months ago I upgraded my Sprint LG Lotus elite for the HTC Evo 4 G shift, and I really love my droid phone. It is like having a phone and computer all in one, which fits my lifestyle very well, because I am always on the go. I can pretty much do everything on my phone, including answering and starting discussions on mylot. I am constantly on facebook, and can get all the alerts from my friends list. I can download music on my phone.
Really though upgrades on a new phone should reflect the needs of the user. If you love apps, taking pics, music, playing games or what not, than a smart phone is great. If it is just for everyday talking and texting, and things in general, upgrade to a phone with a few new extra features. And of course price is always a factor in choosing a new phone.
If you want to know if the phone you are interested in is a good phone, ask the person at the phone store help you to decide, and ask alot of questions so you know what you are getting. And checking reviews are great to. That is something I always do before I buy anything.

I have an android phone through sprint. I like it. Yes it freezes occasionally, but nothing major. My husband also has an android phone, his does not freeze.. but it runs out of battery life pretty quick. No phone is perfect, so I figure you're going to have some sort of problem no matter what you get. My friend got an iphone and hated it, she returned it and went back to her simple phone.

I probably would say not to bother but, then I am one of those who literally uses my phone for texting and phoning so I have no need for a up to date modern phone!

Personally, I don't need iphones, smartphones or any other gadgets like these. I am satisfied with a normal phone, as I believe the modern phones are just for show off. A phone should be good to take a call on it and to write SMS. Even if I would be a billionaire, I wouldn't want a too sophisticated phone for myself.

If you get a contract phone the price of the phone is way less than if you just buy the phone outright. I am using my iPhone this minute to respond to your discussion. My iPhone never freezes. I love it. I had a blackberry also and I could also do mylot on it. I like the iPhone lots better than the blackberry. The BB is more of a business phone. To me the iPhone is much less complicated. I have a contract with AT&T. I pay $89 plus taxes for 2 gigs of data plan. I get unlimited text and 450 anytime minutes with 5000 nights and weekend minutes. It has a great camera. It also does video. I watch YouTube on it. And I can also take video on it. It's a handheld computer. I can do everything on this phone that I can do on my laptop. I can write in my notepad and email it to myself and then transfer it to Microsoft word on my computer.
I said all that to say....YES!!! It is SOOOOO worth it!

ravinskye thanks for asking this question. I have been debating myself about getting a smartphone. I have done several searches for them and really no hard answers. It is good that you asked the question. I am still debating on the situation myself. I do hope you make your decision and that it is worth the money!

Hi ravinskye.
Smart phones are worth the upgrade if you need the features. Basically, a smartphone is like a handheld newly-hired secretary. You need to tell it what to do and when to do it, so that when the proper time comes, the phone will automatically do it for you.
BBs (blackberries) started the smartphone race. They used to have the bleeding edge, but not so much now as samsung and apple are slowly taking up pace, overthrowing nokia which replaced BB in smartphone sales.
Anyway, usually problems occur when people tend to use their phone extensively that the phone reaches its limits. For example, let's say I have a very basic smart phone, if I overload it with applications that run on the background and then start up some more applications, then definitely my phone will freeze up cause the phone was designed to just do some basic stuff for me like email and handful of other apps.
What are the smart phone choices from your telco so we could recommend one for you

I have a blackberry, and I really enjoy it. It's not as good for internet browsing as a droid or an iphone is in my opinion, but I like the email the best. I can have my email come to my phone instantly and it doesn't drain the battery like my sisters iphone does. I also really like the keyboard, more than a touch screen. I am up for re-newal in August and am debating between another blackberry and a droid. I don't see the point in paying so much more for an iphone.

Well, I have an iPhone, but I don't have a computer so it's how I get online and do everything. I even do my mylot stuff with it. *like right now =)* But the blackberry's are great too. That's what I had before. But, what you're going to be doing with it is what makes the choice different for you. I understand that you can't get an iPhone, but remember any smartphone you get requires getting a data plan, and those can get quite expensive as well. So, be careful! And good luck! =)

It depends on what service carrier you have, but I definitely think it is worth the upgrade. BlackBerry is actually going down the tubes, and I myself have a BlackBerry Storm and am about to replace probably in about a week. If you can, try to find a good, cheap HTC Android phone. These phones are powerful, look great, and are easy to use. They have all of the features you need and probably even some you don't, but I'm sure you'll be satisfied. Good luck!!!
