One of the best definitions of love (which is still not really a definition but a description) is "Giving without expecting to take".
There are two main types of love: Passionate and Compassionate. Love may be inspired by a need for companionship or by the need to reproduce. Different people experience these needs in different ways and may seem to be motivated by different things.
Many feelings of 'love' are actually selfish needs in another guise and the experience of 'being in love' is probably more due to hormones and the stimulation of pleasure centres in the brain than to any selfless giving.

I think that love is a paradox. It is a paradox because two people become one , but yet remain two. And I belive that love is the only sane and rational answer to the question of the human existance. If you are Interested in this topic I recomend you to read some of Erich Fromm's books. "The art of Loving" for example. He is usually considered to be a psychoanalytic author but I think of him as a humanist. His thoughts of love are useful in everyday relationships. And in his books there are some great definitions of love that don't sound like a cliche.
