Suggestions for making my future blog beautifully structured

Hey guys, I want to start my venture in the blogging world and I have vague idea about a few things and some terms are there which I have no clue about. However I have created a separate discussion for discussing ways to increase traffic and that is not the issue I present here.
What I want to know from you all is how to structure or arrange my blog? See in all fairness I know how to write content but that's it. I have no clue about how to make my blog pages look cool or add graphics or banners on them(How do you do that? it looks sooo cool).
I have heard about some stuff like widgets but don't know anything about them. what are these? And is there any efficient way of interlinking(Mind it not talking about backlinks or stuff) posts in a blog? Looking for answers from bloggers in mylot, please help me get started.

What blog platform will you be using? It kind of depends on that, since different platforms give you the ability to do different things. Also, do you think you will get your own domain or not? If you get your own domain using Wordpress, you can do a lot of things, but some require a bit of html knowledge, but you can do some pretty nice things on a regular Blogger (Blogspot) blog too. So this is why I am interested in where you were thinking of blogging, first of all.
