This will be our first year in middle school and after visiting the school we found out they separate the boys from the girls for all their classes. They said it makes for a better learning experience, that they didn't get so distracted this way.
I'm not sure if I like this idea or not. Seems to me the girls cause plenty commotion all by themselves. My daughter is always coming home telling me about how the girls are bickering or mad with one another. You're not my friend...I'm first, I'm in the middle, I read last time...Girls can me mean! and moody!
Several days my daughter just hung out with a few of the nicer boys.
Anyone had any experience with this at a middle school age? When I was in school we had all mixed classes except for gym and that kinda made sense.

I went to a co-educational school and boys were never separated from girls. I agree that it would cause more commotion if girls are put together. AS you've said girls can be mean, this is because girls tend to be competitive with each other in an unhealthy way due to jealousy.
I believe it's better not to separate them so there would be balance. And girls will tend to behave more because boys are around.

You hit the nail on the head with the jealousy. Worried someone is more popular than them even at this age! Some girls anyway. I like the balance idea.

When my kids were at Jr. Hi level they made coed gym mandatory. The teachers hated it. I have heard that in some places they have quite a bit of success with separating the genders, most specifically in Math and Science. The reason I have read is that at Jr. Hi age girls do not want to excel in those subjects because they perceive them as being "boy subjects" and they do not want to be thought of as smarter than the boys. Also girls will "they say" work cooperatively until all learn the material, whereas boys will work competitively. I agree with you that girls can be disruptive and hateful.

hmmm, well that sheds a little light on it. Maybe they have a point, but I don't think much of one. Guess I'm gonna find out huh, lol
