English is just a second language in Asian countries. In the Philippines, we are taught English in our early years in school, that is why you can not deny the generally speaking Filipinos speak English better than most Asians. Grammar wise, Filipinos can communicate very well. In fact, there are other nationals who come to the Philippines just to study English, that is fact!
I think it is advantage for any nationality to at least know how to communicate in English since it is internationally used. In International airports, you are confident and its easy if you can speak English. I am proud that I can speak fluent English...

My English is poor...and sometimes I found myself had no confident speaking English in front of the others. Somehow, I tried to make it.
Although English is internationally used, another language-Mandarin is also had become the important language as well. I'm a Chinese from Malaysia and thanks for the unique races and cultures with the Malays and Indians I live with, I have the chances of learning several languages since I'm born. This had become the advantage for companies to welcome me rather than those who only knew one language.

Hi justin!
I think you are lucky to know different language. One friend told me that if you want to involve into business in Asia, you have to know Chinese-mandarin, i know its a kind of Chinese dialect, same as Chinese-Macau or Fukien. Just like the Philippines,we have different languages too per region. So, do you know how to speak Malaysian? Continue to learn English because this is advantage nowadays specially if you wanna work in international companies. Good luck and keep your vocabulary increasing!

Yes, just like the other region, there are several dialects and for the Chinese, Mandarin is used more often; can be considered just like English. So besides Mandarin, I also know Cantonese, Teow Chiew and Hokkien. However in Malaysia, the nation language is Malay, it is a must-take subject in school so I know it well too.

I have been fortunate to have had people in my life who spoke impeccable English which I feel is so essential to be able to grasp the language. My interest in writing has further contributed.

Hi allknowing!
I looked at your profile just to know what your nationality is. I know how Indians take seriously when they want to learn something. They are so admired when it comes to studies, no wonder there are a lot of expert Indian professionals. I know Indians succeed in the world of medicine lately.
Good luck in your writing career, I know you can make it, just focus and write your articles from the heart... thank you for your response!

Languages is one of my God-given talent and English is my second language. We Filipinos were taught very good English from first grade. I was surprised that my good English foundation was not enough when I interacted with British English, I really had a hard time communicating with them as the accent is different and some spellings are different :(!!! Our English is American and I never had problem communicating with American-English speaking people.

Well, at least you are very good in American English. Good for you. But if you are well traveled, you can easily communicate. Did you grow up in the Philippines?
Have a nice day!

hi whitewingspeak, I wonder about that culture.I always wish that English could be second languange to in Indonesia, but it won't happen since we have many local language.I love English, but we just learn it when we were on school, so we're not fluent except take private course.I love ENglish, even I'm not fluent now, I won't stop learning English :D

Not very good exactly ;p
It's very easy to memorize three new vocabulary per day, but to practice speaking is not so easy since I have no partner to practice together, is it possible practice speaking with my self only?Since you know that my country doesnt take English as second language, people will get you freak, weird and even call you arrogant if you speak English in common place, but yeah... I'm so glad practice it at home, so sad, right?

Yes I agree that is it easier to write, at least we can glance one more time before the final draft.
In speaking, it is spontaneous and sometimes we kinda confused of the words and its meanings. Funny if we run out of words hahaha!
Don't mind them if they say you are arrogant when you speak English. Maybe we should suggest Mylot to have a voice chat application??? So we can pratice the speaking??

You have a very good English now. If you don't have a formal education in English language, i think it is better to practicing speaking, this way you will get used to. The next thing you do is memorize or understand at least 3 words per day to increase your vocabulary. The more words, the better.

maybe a second language only in the Philippines....
because Filipinos is dependent to Americans,
for today's era, no such thing as Maria Clara anymore,
the way Filipino teenagers who can type JeJeMon text in mobile phones hahahaha
it only came for a foreign cartoon... Pokemon...
but if you look it deeper, a lot of Mexican language is the Filipino dialect have...

what i mean of dependent is:
for example...
in a Caregiver or a Domestic Helper situations, Filipinos are working abroad to serve and care the foreigner's child in exchange of big salary while her own child in the Philippines she cannot care presently....
because when only Filipinos choose to work here in Philippines, the salary is below minimum....
imagine the salary even the Vice President is so small....
so, if lucky, were depending our future if the Philippine Immigration won't stamped our working VISA as "DENIED"....
to take a note that all who work abroad gets a rich big time in life if they only buy ASSETS rather than LIABILITIES... or too late....
usually, when they go back to the Philippines, a lot of Liabilities spent instead of saving it for the future of their child.... or for ASSETS as prioritized....
even my friend told me that until now we are still conquered by Spain silently...
i have some clues what was it....
i answer him..
it's all about Roman Catholics in Religion????
he only smiled....

I think Filipinos in general is not dependent to Americans, what do you mean about "dependent"? maybe it is wrong word used because we really don't depend on them, actually and literally.
Mexican language is same as Spanish language, i think we have some Spanish words, that is true.

Thank you very much for the detailed and specific explanation. Well, in that case it is the person's choice to be dependent because she/he can still find job here, only with a minimal salary compared to going abroad. The Philippines' dependency ( if that is what you call it) has a deep root, and for those who did not understand pretty much about history of politics and economics in the Philippines like me, i'm sorry i am a little bit obscured.
Thank you for your response.

Good for you that you can speak the English language fluently. As for me, I think I can comprehend and write nicely using the English language. However, I'm having difficulty in conversing using it. I'm just to conscious of my grammar and choice of words whenever I get to converse in English. But still I do believe that I am proficient in the language. I agree that Filipinos have a good grasp of the English language. I do encounter some Filipinos who really is like an American foreigner when talking. Also, with the call center industry booming here in our country, speaking the English language is a big advantage for many Filipinos. I hope I can speak straight fluent English like you do. And I hope I can erase my poor grades in mgy English classes back in high school and collegiate days too!

You write very good English Agentgulaman!
I think that is the reason why the call center companies are increasing each year here in the Philippines, the Filipinos are fast to learn. And they can immitate american english pretty well..

I agree with you Agent.
Lately, it is not just the outsourcing business that is growing in the country but also English language school and private tutorials. Last year, my son told me that his friend/classmate is being hired by a Korean to accompany him during weekends. His job?? To just be with him wherever he goes and talk to him in English! hahaha, interesting right?

Thank you for that whitewingspeak, but still I feel that I have a lot more to learn in using the language. Yeah, that's the reason too why business outsourcing is growing here in our country aside from cheap labor. Also, due to our high regard to foreigners from America, a lot of Filipinos think that speaking fluent English makes a notch higher in status compared to those who don't. The English language is widely promoted in Philippine schools. That could be another good reason too.

It is true that when you communicate well in english you are very much confident that you are being understood the way you explain and express your feeling. It is also an advantage as you seek job because during interview you are questioned in english here and abroad.

Hi ashucool007!
Good morning. That's good for you to be speaking fluent English. You are doing great.
Please read carefully my discussion, I am not comparing a certain nationality to Filipinos. And most importantly i did not compare Indians and Filipinos, did you ever read that in my thread?? I just said that Filipinos can speak English better grammar compare to other nationalities but i am not referring to Indians.
You know i even admire Indians, who already migrated in the US. I watched spelling contest a couple of times and most of the contestants are Indians, I am aware of that, i did not put you down. I agree you 100%. Thank you for your respond.
