There are some things in my life that I just cannot get past. I am terrified to learn how to drive. I mean even getting into a vehicle, I panic. There are so many crazy drivers and I cannot seem to get over this fear. I have tried to learn and not one person I have met has the patience to help me get over my fear...
How do you overcome your fears? How can I get past this already?

Well I guess I'm the wrong person to respond to this because at age 15 I decided never to drive. I would see the pregnant woman in a red pick up truck I killed while driving. So I told my mom I am not driving and she agreed. I Still don't drive. It is a good thing because I do have a hair trigger temper. I would be the poster child oF aggressive driving!
How to come over a phobia? Seek professional help. If you are ready to conquer a fear , go get some help. Good Luck.

I wish I had the kind of money that is needed to seek help. Unless your rich you cannot afford to do that. Maybe if I had tons and tons of money and wasn't struggling so bad sure. But, that is not reality unfortunately...

I think the best way is to seek professional help. There are some psych out there who practice hypnotism to remove phobias. What you have is not an ordinary fear but it's a chronic one. Nobody else can help you in this case but a good practitioner of hypnotism. I think it takes only one session for you to overcome that fear.
Try asking around your area if there are people who do this.

@scarface, there are professionals who perform hypnosis at your own place. They do home service when they think that the patient can recover fast in their own home where they feel more secure and comfortable.
@lovingmybabies, too bad that people like that charges a lot. I read a book hypnosis before that was given by my father and that book costs less than $5. You can learn from that book and perform hypnosis by yourself. I have read from that book that it's possible. Or trying searching online for do it yourself hypnosis.

If I had a lot of money I would try that. Too bad those people here are a FORTUNE and I am by no means rich. So, unfortunately that's not an option for me... =(

I'm scared to drive also. I'm not scared to be in vehicles, but my mom is and I know how scared she gets sometimes. I hate having to depend on people all the time, but I can't get past my fear. I never had anyone with lots of patience to give me lessons either. It's a huge fear of mine and I know I have to get over it. I got my Learner's Permit a few years ago, but I never could make myself try for a license. I want to be able to take my little boy to the park- just the two of us. He is my main reason to work towards getting it in the future. I know my husband doesn't mind, but I'm sure it would be nice for him not to have to haul me around everywhere. My mom doesn't drive either, so I never really had a parent that could help me. My dad and I are estranged, so that didn't work. I hope you can make it happen. I know I need to. My son needs me to.

I am SO glad I am not alone on this. Sometimes you feel like you are, you know? This is the hardest thing for me to get past. I don't know if I ever will. My grandma is still scared to drive and she is 75! She has the same fear as I do... Wonder if it is something genetic
Yeah I have my permit too but I cannot go further than that. I have 3 children that really need me to. And like you I am always having to depend on other people for a ride. I hate it!

I understand, I also was afraid to learn to drive, but mostly because if I made a mistake and caused an accident, it could cost someone, either financially or physically.
But my biggest fear after I got my license was driving on the highway and I avoided it every chance I could until.... my oldest son was going to college 45 miles away and needed a ride since he didn't have his license yet. And, this college was off the highway and it would have not only cost so much more in fuel, but time to take back road..So, I forced myself to drive it for my son and though I am glad I overcame that fear, I am upset that my son only had one more quarter of college and dropped out...

I am afraid of causing it or maybe not causing it and someone else causing it. I was a child when I played with a stupid ouija board and I was an idiot and asked when I was going to die. It told me at 27 in a car accident. I am 26 now... =( Not really sure that I believe it but I think it's part of my fear... =(

Fear is the greatest obstacle that prevents man in fulfilling his dreams. An innate emotion of that occurs if he feels he is being threatened or in danger.
I guess there are only some people who really have the courage to confront their fears. But I know to overcome this emotion of ours is to face it head-on and you will realize that some are not a threat all.

I agree I am tired of letting fear hold me back to be honest.
I want to slap fear in the face! I wish I could. I need to try to tackle this fear that is for sure.

It will take time and you may never get completely over it. My son was the same way. He was petrified to drive. He had terrible nightmares. We started him out slow and took him places were there was not much traffic. We actually started him out in a big parking that had no cars in it so he could get the feel of the car. He has been driving for ten years now, and is better but still does not care to drive.

I don't think I will ever completely get over it. My older sister did but my grandma never did. I wonder if it's genetic this fear because my grandma, my older sister and I all have it... I actually get panic attacks behind the wheel which is really scary and dangerous. Maybe I should just give up the thought of it. I don't think I will ever be able too. =(

One's fears are very personal. It is something that you have to decide for yourself if you want to overcome it.
Many moons ago, I also had a fear of driving. But then I also recognized that this is just something that I have to overcome, as it would be a necessity. So one day, I "borrowed" a car and drove around the block, then to the city streets, and then the highway on my own, until I figured out for myself that I've overcome my fear.
It is great that I did it all by myself, as there was no one beside me to criticize or stress me out. There was also no one there beside me to tell me that I had the emergency brake on the whole time.
Nowadays, the fear that I am still trying to work on is public speaking.

The only way to get over is to do the thing with someone with you and try it repeatedly and believe me you will get over the fear. But have someone with you till such time you are on your own.

Hi Loving,
I suggest that if you are that frightened about driving, then you might better stay out of a car. Really. No one can help you get over your anxiety except you. Accidents do happen, but that doesn't mean you should be scared every time you get into a car. No one wants to hit you any more than you want to hit them, so I think you just need to examine the real reason why you are so scared. It's not really logical (though many people have these same fears) to be afraid to get behind the wheel of a car. Obey the laws, watch where you are going and drive safely and you should be okay...
I said all that to say that I am afraid of traffic in unfamiliar places. I had to make up my mind that I could drive anywhere. My son in law is kind enough to go with me direct me when I am driving in new places. After a time or two I can drive it by myself with no problem... so maybe taking someone with you who is confident will help you get used to driving for awhile.

I feel the same way that since I am so scared and I panic and freeze up behind the wheel that I shouldn't ever be behind the wheel. Everyone else disagrees with me though. =( I think I could do more damage than good driving...
I know it's not logical but it's there. I get panic attacks and everything it's really bad. I'm not sure if it's possible to get over this fear.
My grandma hasn't driven in over 40 years because she is just as scared as I am of driving. Is it possible to be genetic??
