I had long hair until mid-morning, this Wednesday. But I also have sleep apnea, & must wear a breathing mask (bi-pap) every night, & the straps tend to slide around on longer hair, unless I cinch up the straps 'til it gives me a headache...
Too, due to a thyroid problem, I'm losing a lot of hairs....alllll over my bed. And my body. And my food (I usually dine in bed).
Since my hair grows like a weed, I usually cut it every year at least once, just to get the darn stuff out of my way. I'll have enough by Texas' coldest months not to fear getting a head chill, & right now, with our tenacious, triple-digit heat wave / drought, I'm after anything I can find to stay cool, & still keep down the AC bill!
So, instead of hauling out the shears & going at it as I usually do, this time I let Elic have a go at it. I think the last time she cut it...maybe...was when I first had to wear a mask while in the hospital, & my long hair didn't allow it to stay put. I'd put the straps in place, but sooner than you can say brrr, first thing I knew I had this loud, cold wind blowing up my eyeballs!
So Elic, bless all her hairy hobbit toes, had only one pair of scissors on her: fingernail scissors. It took her 45 minutes that time...snip, snip, snip, snipping away!
This time it may have taken her half an hour, but I doubt it.
The other cut was very spiky, punky looking (which probably confused all my Conservative friends...well, heck, the liberal ones, too! LOL!), but I didn't mind.
This time, she had proper scissors--and a buzz-cutter she inherited from her mom--& while she took great care to follow my directions, it's sightly longer than she left it before, but it's still punky, slightly spiky-looking! LOL!
I've had my hair cut at cheap salons, & I get better jobs from Elic! Go figure. Anyway, I'm 110% satisfied.
I can't wait to see the looks on other people's faces! People all seem to go into shock when I saw off all my hair! Meanwhile, I get quite a hoot from their reactions.
So, my friends, are you as careless about your hair as I am? Have you ever just picked up shears & whacked it off, not even looking into a mirror, as I usually do? Or would the very idea make you crazy?
Do you have a long-suffering pal like Elic?

On rare occasions I will go to an inexpensive salon, or ask my niece to cut my hair. Mostly I just do it yourself. It was strange what would happen at two in the morning when I would plan on trimming it and just keep going. I once had someone walk completely around me to look for my pony tail. I am in the process of going long again now.

I'd considered letting mine grow really long again, but the thing that put me over the edge, really, was the strands that kept dragging through my soup! The bi-pap mask was also way up on the list of deciding factors, though.
I actually made short work of deciding, this time. Normally, it takes me about 6 months to think it over before I cut it.
Maybe I'm just getting too old to take so long to do things!
Oh, & 2 A.M. is a typical time for me to make major decisions. Especially if I happen to be sitting on "the throne!"

I have never cut my hair myself. I tried it on my son when he was about 3-4 years old and it was a disaster. He looked at himself and started to cry and it looks pretty awful.
However, I was thinking I might try it when my hair grows out. I just got it cut a month or so ago--or was it 2?--when a salon chain was trying for a Guiness record and combined that with donating the proceeds to the family of a deputy that was killed on New Year's Day. So for $5 the bargain hunter in me said go for it! It was past my shoulders and by the time she was done I don't think any hair was more than an inch long and it felt great!
I have always liked long hair but hated taking care of it. I don't think I'll ever let it grow out again but I hate spending money on cutting it. So I'll try my hand at it once it starts bothering me again.

Yeah, that's what got me started cutting my hair...the cost...but eventually it's the inconvenience of long hair. It's so much easier to wash, much quicker to dry, & of course, you already know how the sleeping mask is easier to use, now. In general, although I look better with long hair, like you, I hate having to constantly fight the tangles & so on!
I don't think most people care as little about looks as I, but if you want to cut your own, I'd get someone who could tell you tricks on how to do it & get a reasonable result...until you're confident it will be okay to remove the "training wheels" & whack away!

Oh yes, I've cut my own hair and with good results. My hair is pretty long with layers. I do look in the mirror but I've cut a good amount off and layered it as I go. It comes out alright and I get plenty of compliments on it. Just last week some guy was joking with me about our income and he said, "I know I'm poorer than you because I could not afford to go in and get my hair cut like you can." The joke was that he has almost no hair but seriously...it's been eons since I've paid someone to cut my hair.

I used to cut my own hair when I was young. I'd hold it up in the air and snip where I could see it in the mirror.

Yeah. I had the same method, back then.
I was 4 when I first did that, & I got a sort of Cindy Lauper look (long on one side, burred on the other). I was at a lady's house (she, "Miss Tilly" & Mom went to the same church), & Mom took her eyes off me for a few minutes. I wandered around & into Miss Tilly's bedroom, & saw the scissors on her vanity. I would've cut both sides short, but was abruptly intercepted by my horrified mother.
So, I got my first self-cut at 4, & the next day, I got a big straw hat that "covered a multitude of sins" to wear to church!
I don't think I had any reason to do as I had done. It was just a way to relieve my boredom.
Punk at four! (Still punk at 63! )

Woops! You gonna call the Haircutter Cops on me?
Yes. Elic is indeed worth her weight in dark chocolate!

I am sorry for your problems with your hair, especially with it falling out due to medication. I don't have the medication problem of my hair falling out; I just have very long hair which has always been as fine as a baby's - and I am 70 years old! Anyway, the point of my reply is: Just last Fall in October, my friend who is a hair dresser told me she had taken a supplement called BIOTIN on recommendation of her doctor because she was getting a bald near her neckline behind her ear due to thyroid problems and medications.
I don't have the thyroid problem, but have such fine hair, I thought, "What the heck? It can't hurt to try Biotin." I started taking, biotin following the directions on the bottle and now I have all kinds of new hair growth - after having straight, straight hair all my life you can imagine my surprise with most of these new ones being curly! Maybe you could try this biotin, as well - it is available at Wal-Mart, Walgreens, CVS and other places which sell supplements. It has worked for me and my hair is getting thicker by the day.
I know well the heat wave and triple digit heat/drought here in Texas - and you can always wear a knit cap to keep your head warm in the Winter - I am in Lubbock, TX, and live & travel in my 31' 5th wheel travel trailer - being a 'parking lot dweller' I have to rely on my portable gas generator for electricity, so don't have A/C most of the time due to the high cost of gasoline.
No, I won't pick up the shears and whack my hair off - it has taken TOO long to get it this long, so I will just keep piling it up on top of my head and dealing with the heat that way! It is nice in the Winter to have it down around my ears and keeping my back warm down to my waist and beyond a bit! ;-)
Take care and let me hear from you about your results with biotin.

LOL! DD turned 6 this spring, so when I was pregnant with her not quite 7 years before, I had a ton of hair that started growing at that point. Human hair grows for something like 5-7 years, and then falls out & starts growing again. So this past winter, I had all this hair falling out, and my braid (usually about 1" across at the bottom) was getting down to this puny little 1/2" width at the base and I had a bunch of short crap that wouldn't stay put all around my face. To the salon it was.
There's nothing more annoying than going into a salon and having to justify and/or repeatedly say, Yes, I want my past-the-waist hair cut short. I did a couple of online "makeover" pictures to bring in, and ended up with a pretty nice kinda grecian/roman martriarchal kinda look that I really liked.
DH didn't have it quite so easy - he had hair about the same length as mine, and was put on a new prescription that REALLY didn't agree with him. When you hear your dearly beloved yelling from the shower at the other end of the house, "Cathi, can you look up Lyrica and hair loss?" you just know it's not going to be good. And yes, it's really, really difficult to not giggle ;)
