I was with my mom this morning. We went to DFA Manila in ASEANA City to get my passport. We were about to cross over the next lane we were caught up by a STOP light. We settle in the middle of the Pedestrian Lane at the corner. When a Black Car start buzzing us to move over. For they are passing through.
Take note, we are already in the corner of the side of the road. And the black car stepped in the Pedestrian Lane. I remember my parents told me that the SAFEST ZONE in the street are the Pedestrian Lane. Now I am confuse if Pedestrian Lane are still safe.

Hi!
Nowadays, people don't respect law, rules, whatsoever. They set their own rules and live with it. They don't value life anymore and what matters to them is what they want and they do whatever they want.
I remember when I had to go to office for work, I need to cross a really huge road, four vehicles can fit on each side with just a small center island separating both roads. Though there are a lot of people crossing that since it's both sides have subdivisions, there is absolutely no pedestrian lane. Everyday I had to go through that huge road and everyday it scares me. I even saw a young boy hit by a motorcycle just the same time and same point we are crossing. I was just a few feet away but we are walking in the same line I must say. Nobody was able to get the plate as the driver just looked at him for a while and moved fast. The boy had bruises and was really shocked! So many times I was almost hit, too by big buses.
And what's crazy about those drivers is if they see you're coming, they are going to race with you! They are going to drive faster so they "don't hit" anybody.. Crazy reckless people
Anyways, the point is no matter what the law says, if the people would not follow, the roads will always be a dangerous place for everyone. Those people should really be thought a lesson - something they would never forget for the rest of their lives and will make them aware of how dangerous what they're doing are.

I personally still do, and I find it disrespectful to those who don't. It's sad, but the majority of the population everywhere have no respect for the Pedestrian Lane at all, not even when they see someone in the middle of the street already. I normally cross the street by where I work to pick up my children and on numerous occassions, people have literally thrown the vehicle at me almost hitting me if I would not have moved and been paying attention. And the funny part is, is that they look at you like if you are the one doing something wrong.
Pedestrian Lane isn't that safe anymore personally, there was a law passed that they would ticket people for passing or being on the pedestrian lane while in a red light, but I don't know if it is still valid, and if it is people to follow it.

Well like I said, down here in Florida they do have or had laws, but of course minimal people follow them. They should be a bit more stricter, but then again, the way the government lately works is that if nothing happens or no one gets hurt then they basically just let it go and wait until something happens. Sad but true, that in order for the government to do something about it, someone either has to get hurt or die...
Don't you just love how the system works!!!

what is a pedestrian lane? all i know is a pavement or pedestrian precinct

a pedestrian precinct is usually a road that has been closed to cars and paved over so that people can wander about. it is usually an area with lots of shops and if it is possible to send traffic some other way they do but it may be that vehicles are allowed at certain times to do deliveries. they are not controlled by lights, there is a new idea that they are trying where you get a square where pedestrians can wander about but cars can go as well but must give way to the pedestrians and there is a very low speed limit but it is only experimental. the only light controlled situation I know of is a crossing to get pedestrians across a busy road.

It's much more worse here in India so I don't get surprised anymore. Even on the sidewalk pavement, you can see motorcycle drivers competing with people walking on the side of the road .
Here there is no such thing as pedestrian lane as long as there is space to peep in their bikes, they will ran over you. Nothing is safe here now, at your own risk if you walk .

Same situation as here in the Philippines!Sidewalks are being overrun by almost all vehicles. They will even blow their horns straight at you when you are walking. And yes! A lot of those motorcycle drivers really pisses me off! They only care on getting away from the traffic and doesn't mind other road users. They always give me aheadache whenever I'm driving. They usually and suddenly appear at your sides with no due warning that it's as if they are the king of the road.

Have you taken note of the license plate? You should really report it to the LTO to give that kind of guys a lesson. A lot of those people are also here in Davao. Even the PUJs drop and fetch passengers directly on the pedestrian lane. It's like there's no one needing the pedestrian lane to pass safely. :

I was just thinking how many people they have treated that way, what if the women? the elderly? children? yeah especially the children, some people panic when they honk their horn at them and run to different directions, what if they were our folks and we are not there to lead them

hi syoti20,
nowadays, we can't trust pedestrian lanes especially when there are drivers who think they own the road. just be careful my friend even though we are crossing in the pedestrian lanes, it is still be wiser if we will be extra careful when we are in the road. take care and bless you always..

Many of the motorists think of that they have much rights over the road because they have vehicles. So , there are some who didn't acknowledge PEDESTRIAN Lane and just step on their gas fast. This is the truth behind the increased number of street accidents...

Hi Syoti!
This happened to me when I was in high school. Alone and try to cross the road safely using that 'safest zone'. I was there alone crossing the road when the light is RED, so every vehicles there with all respect stopped and give me a way to cross except for this motorcycle accelerate faster and almost slightly to hit me. I'm really surprised as it's moving fast in front of me. Thank God nothing happen to me that time. If I took a step forward I think I will be in the hospital ward that day. I really get phobia because of it. Whenever I need to cross a road and let say my sister is there I will hold her hand. If no one with me I will make sure till the traffic was safe before crossing and it really takes time to do so. Yes, whether you are using the pedestrian lane or not it will never guarantee your safety. Still need to be careful.

We can't just blame and ask government to do this and that. The community and the citizen should carry the responsibility together. If we just rely to the government hundred percents when something happen and people dislike it they will blame the government badly. Not the government fault. I hate when every time we need to rely on them solely~ It is all depends on the individual. If everyone is a responsibility people and know the road ethics very well then I think the same incident will not going to happen.:)

hellow syoti,
it seems like its a common issue across the globe. It happens almost everyday in our country, right in front of traffic cops who should be executing their duties by arresting these twain's...so, is not a safe place until certain measures are put in place.

Most driver are too impatient that they want to get away from traffic hold up. They look for an escape route. that is why they would want to push pedestrian away and then drive through the lane that is meant for those walking on foot.
These driver do all this because they feel they can get away with it without being caught by the traffic police.

You are right the crosswalk is suppose to be the safe lane. However, people have forgotten that over time. I think everyone believes they own the road and the walkers can just tough it. I've stopped and let people cross the street and the cars behind me start honking and flipping me the middle finger. Of course, I just ignore them because I'm doing the right thing. It's actually funny to watch them get irate over something so small.

back "I have the walk light young man and don't you dare."He drove right past me brushing my skirt and scaring me.He had run a red light. so I see him a half block up the street and a cop calls to me" ma'am are you the lady who nearly was hit by this idiot? I assured him I was and he asked me to sign this paper asserting I had nearly been hit by this y oung man.I got great satisfaction out of seeing him get a huge fine for running a red light and almost knocking me down.,I was five minutes late for work but no problem when I told my boss what had happened.

I would say that there is no safe place for pedestrains anymore. It seems that the drivers forget completely that there still are pedestrains out there. So many people get hit and either enjured or killed by drivers everyday. Many drivers leave the scene of the accident as if they hit a animals. I think that driving off after hitting a animal is wrong too. But doing that to a human...its just beyond my understanding.

Well, honestly, I don't think that Pedxing are followed faithfully nowadays. But if I have to speak for myself alone, I can proudly say that yes, I still respect the Pedxing, in line with this, the traffic lights too.

Yet they are more street gangs that violates the rules than respect it. I totally get annoyed when meeting with such of people. What I normally see is they will only respect it when they are in the busy streets whereby there are lots of people walking everywhere so they will need to be careful not to hit everyone or they will get in court. When there are only few pedestrian they tend to break the law~

In many countries, Pedestrian lanes are well-respected. Otherwise, the drivers would have a really tough time in courts should they receive complaints from the pedestrians.

On the road, after we will going in a right way, the other can do the wrong. We can not expect the problems how will come on the road. And what you have talked with that black car person. Whose mistake is there?.
any way take care.

That's just a shame. Pedestrian should always have the right of way. That is rule of the thumb right? Too bad that driver doesn't respect the rules of driving. First of, his irresponsible; secondly, that's just plain rude.

Yes, that is what they learned in driving class. But I think they are just attending it in order to get the license without truly implement and apply it in the real life. I nearly get hit with a motorcycle before even if I'm using that'safest zone'. So I come with my conclusion that never trust the yellow line as it still will not giving you any safety guarantees.

Hi CT! Boy this reply is way, way late! Anyway, better late than never right?hihihi...
I think that's usually the case, especially in my country (I think) When I finally begin to drive, I assure you that I'll be following all the rules! That's a promise!

IT SHOULD BE SAFE because the Pedestrian Lane gives to pedestrians the RIGHT OF WAY, BUT STILL YOU HAVE TO BE VERY PRUDENT AND CAREFUL. It is easy to become prudent and careful if you IMAGINE ALL drivers are IRRESPONSIBLE.
Make sure that you use the Pedestrian Lane when crossing the street. Make sure too that when you cross the street by the pedestrian lane, the green light for pedestrians is on.
In Davao City, pedestrians anytime can press a button of a traffic device placed on the roadside where there are pedestrian lanes. This is to make sure that the traffic light, which is automated and interconnected throughout all parts of the city, will give you time to cross the street by stopping all the vehicles with the red light and giving you the green light for pedestrians.
Speed maniacs and vehicle owners in Davao City have discovered to their chagrin that their licenses and franchises cannot be renewed unless they pay speed and other traffic violations recorded by television cameras operated by the traffic management staff of the city. Television cameras are mounted on main streets, busy intersections, main intersections, and even lonely streets prone to traffic accidents.
If you have any complaint about drivers - any justified complaint - you can report to the Eagle Squad, a traffic management team of the city which roves the city at busy times of the day or posts their vehicles at critical sections. You can also report directly to the Mayor. By and large, our drivers in Davao City are well-disciplined because local officials are responsive to complaints.
