the best about homemade foods for baby is the assurance that they are safe and clean since they are concocted by you alone. besides, exposing varied foods from home is healthy and would prevent a child from becoming picky-eater.

my child, who is now two and a half, had a good mix of homemade and store bought foods. The summer when she was about 5 or 6 months old, she ate almost all homemade. I was living next door to a "earth mamma", she was all natural, cooked from scratch and taught me how to make really good baby food, using food from the garden. When I went back to work, i would make a few batches of food over the weekend and then supplement with jarred food. She seems to be healthy and will eat almost anything.

I made homemade baby food, initially, yes. I did vegetables - pureed them smooth, froze them in ice cube trays and then in ziploc bags so I could remove whatever quantity I needed, etc. Then, every single time I fed them to my daughter, she would immediately gag and throw up her food all over her high chair tray. She did not like the consistency, no matter how smooth I made it. I tried carrots, squash, sweet potatoes... all the usual "first" vegetables... and she threw up every time :( I got tired of spending time and money making her what I thought was the best food and then, if I gave her the same thing from a commercial jar, she ate it like it was the greatest thing she'd ever tasted. I agree with the process, in theory, of course! It just didn't work for me until she was older and eating finger food, unpureed. At that point, she loved pretty much everything because texture was never a problem.

I have yet to have kid and won't for the next few years, but I've decided that when I do, I will use homemade food. It's cheaper than buying it and not bad for the baby. However, I wouldn't freeze it, just make it every few days and keep it in the fridge. It's not hard to do.
