Do Avatars describe a person?

I have seen many Avatars around here on mylot. And also on some sites too. Some times i feel that these avatars accidentally describe a persons status online or how he behaves online or how successful he is online, etc. What do you feel?do you feel the same like i feel.Do you see avatars or not because some even dont give a glance at it.

Can describe a person and maybe not as some do like to place an avatar which is completely opposite of what they are. I mean what do we say about some males who use the female avatars and vice verse. I do not think it has to do with their actual s@xual orientation, as some do it to draw attention, anonymity, and or think they get better responses that way. It is strictly a preference in my opinion. If this were true what could we say about some of the members who never upload one. I have a different take and or reason behind mine. See I have used 3 different ones but kind of the same theme. I just like my Wendy's. I do not upload a picture because I came here wanting to make sure anyone who knows me knows me not for how I may look but more so on how I write and how I do says a lot about me, I believe. Yes it is easier when someone does have an avatar because they are easier to remember. There are so many similar names and with an avatar one can spot a member easier.

They will be blowing with the wind of our Windy city. Which recently I did get some red highlights, so lets hope they last by the time you get here. Oh and by the way, yup you will recognize me as I will be talking up a storm.

Making avatars is your personal choice.Maybe it also speaks the personality of the person but i think it's nice to see that people had their own avatar in their own creative way. Some People love to make their own avatar in order for them to express themselves.

Avatars tell a lot about a user's taste, choice and personality. They show how consistent a person his.

I see all of the avatars and I often stop and try and read between the lines of the user who posted too and tie up something which connects the two - and ususally it is there somewhere. There is something in each one of us that makes us unique. For this reason there is something which makes us choose one avatar and not another therefore even though we may not immediately notice what it is, in time when we get to know the user better we will realise what it is.

Wrong! The fact that you have used a male model says so much more than you can imagine. You did not use your own image because it could have made you: a) too popular among the female Lotters? b) too unpopular among the female Lotters? c) too popular among the male Lotters? d) too unpopular among the male Lotters? e) you are not too well off and don't have a camera/phone to take a photo. f) you are married and your wife wouldn't allow you to put your own photo g) some of those who go to your local pub might be on here too

Well, for me , yes. It's because when i choose an avatar, it more or less depicts my nature. Like for example, a butterfly for an avatar. It means i am fond of seeing butterflies. For me, the avatar is somehow a self expression.

Correct! So now you have noticed from my wacky picture , that i am a fun loving person and that i have a happy disposition in life? It's because whatever problem i may have, i offer them to the Lord for help. I know i can rely on him for help at all times. I just have to believe.

It took some time to you to choose avatar but to me it is taking forever. It was one week ago i created this discussion. At that time i did not had any avatar and i was thinking on what avatar to use and after one week i am thinking it even now. Yea you are right. The main reason for avatars is for recognition of a member. But according to me they surve more purpose than recognition. Have a nice day friend.

I do think that someone's avatar can say something about them. Sometimes, it can be a lot, while other times perhaps not as much. Perhaps, in some cases, it might say anything about the person. It's certainly possible, but I still think that someone's avatar may reveal a little something about this individual's personality, one way or another, even if it is just a little. It's something that I would like to think.

After seeing a avatar a thought comes to my mind.Although only a little but still it makes a difference

Emoticons normally are expected to convey what the writer feels and to some extent they do a fairly good job of it. Although it is not a wise thing to judge a user by the emoticons used one more or less gets an idea of that user's personality. Those who over use it I find them to be immature!
• India

emoticons are just used to express the way they are feeling. They are just expressions.but they are used without thinking too much then they might bring misunderstanding. And please do tell me what do you think about avatars.

A pleasant day to you Humanicon, I do also noticed that avatars which being placed at the side of each name. For me, these avatars do somehow represents them. As to how they approach their lives. As how they are dealing with lifes issues and problems. And as to how they handle their lives. However, there are times, the avatars that appear besides their names is only one of the pictures that they have shot out from their slr cameras and they just want to display it for a while for no reason at all. As they just feel happy whenever they saw the picture that they have taken.

Hello Humanicon, I partially agree with you. Sometimes people choose avatar as per the reflection of their personality & sometimes people choose it which they find good to look at & don't relate it to the personality.

Avatars don't define personality of the person most of time!!
9 Jul 11
The Avatar will give anyone who sees it a good hint of what the person it represents is like. A person's personality may play a huge factor in his/her preferences on picking the avatar that he or she is gonna use. So I guess my answer is yes.

I always felt that while choosing a avatar a person chooses it by looking at his personality and some times by looking at his likings. Many times his personality makes him choose to a particular one.

I think avatars are not always depict the real people. because, avatars could be the creation of such person, or a picture of someone that he/she likes. So, it could be avatars describes what these people aspire. But, it can also sometimes similar to those of the original. Happy MyLotting to All! :D

Well as of right now my Avatar is of Scary Spice. Actually I think we both look a little alike lol(wishful thinking. So I did pick the avatar because she was one of my favorite spice girls. Sometimes I will choose avatars that I feel would best desribe me. I can see how some people wouldn't do that. Sometimes you dont know if your talking to a man or woman until one says something. Please someone feel free too tell me here on mylots how to get a moving avatar? Thanks.

Well I'm not sure what you mean but sometimes I do have a feeling that there is a certain level of relation between an avatar and it's controller. I mean it would make sense as the person who is controlling the avatar will make decisions based on their way of thinking. This will be evident to others on the site who will be able to pick up on the relation instantly.

I mean the same that you have wrote in here. The person chooses avatar depending upon what he likes.

A lot of people have their own pictures as avatars so unless you count that as describing themselves (i guess it is), then no.. People just use whatever pictures they find looks good, I think. That's what I did with mine.. lol i only chose it because it fits my name. The pie in my avatar isn't even pumpkin pie. But it looks good.

Asking a question out of curiosity.do you like pies? If you do then you have choosen avatar to your likings.but it doesnot mean that it reflects what you write in your posts, but it will always be neutral avatar.

In my opinion "yes". A person choose an avatar that reflects in it's personality (if you asks me,but i am not sure about the others) Some maybe just put a photo that they really like, but still it reflects what they like right? Not really sure about the others why they put/use those photos as their avatar. And why you don't have any photo in your avatar till now?
• India
9 Jul 11
Yes that still reflects.I did not upload mine yet because my ISP is preventing me from uploading avatar.Actually my ISP disconnects every time i try to upload photos somewhere.

Hi Humanicon! Maybe avatars could describe a person sometimes but not most of the time. Usually people just select random pictures they like to use as avatars. But I have also observed that people also sometimes use avatars that has significant meaning to them. Sometimes it could be associated with their personality, past experiences, mood, the things they like, etc. There are some I believe whose avatars are somewhat connected to them or gives us a clue to who they are. Well in my case, it's just my favorite number.

IMO, most people use pictures of something they find funny or cool as an avatar, but it could describe a person insignificantly.

Yes sometimes they tend to describe a person. That is what i think. And it is not necessary that every avatar should describe.
