or at least you can in Florida. The last shuttle went up today. After the landing, the Shuttle Program is now ending. What do you think JFK would have said to President Obama? Sigh! Yes, I have been all for cutting stuff and the Space Program certainly isn't a top priority. However... President Obama has killed the Space Program. There, I said it. Thus, he has killed the dream of thousands of children who wanted to be Astronauts. No, I am not buying the private business stuff until it starts launching ships and going into space.

Florida has been the hardest hit and the highest state effected by unemployeement. Though I can't completely fault the president for this. Yes, he cut the space program, but he's not acting alone. Our current govenor isn't doing much better to help bring jobs back to Florida. If anything he's making it worse. For an example, they are re-constructing a new power plant. Instead of hiring capable men and woman who are out of work here in Florida, those much-needed jobs are going to workers out-of-state. Now how is that going to help the employment rates here in Florida? It's not. And, our state is going to continue to suffer because our state depends on income from turisim, and now with the space program gone, not only are there those workers out of work as soon as Atlantis is put on display, but all the restaurants along the coast who thrive on the visitors who come out to view shuttle launches. Cuts are being made right and left, and yes the president is mostly at fault, but what about our local law makers? What about them? How are they helping to bring jobs to Florida? Quite frankly, they are just as much to blame for this as the president is. If we could just bring our troops home that is money we won't be spending, money that we can cut. However, I still don't see how they or anyone can say that the space program is that unimportant. How can anyone honestly say that? It is a deep part of our history, it has done more than just create jobs. Our space program is only one of many great things about our state, and I'm sad to see it end like this.

Oh, wait. I did a little digging and yes, it's a union that made this happen. "Union carpenters make $16.13 an hour, including pension and medical insurance benefits. The imported workers get $8 an hour and no benefits." http://articles.sun-sentinel.com/1992-06-07/news/9202130324_1_local-workers-power-plant-florida-power So yet again, a union is holding workers back. I can't blame anyone for giving the jobs to out of state workers. I wouldn't deal with a union either if I were them and sometimes you can't find non-union labor in large enough quantities because unions convince all these people to join them by promising the big money and and big benefits. What they can't promise though is that they won't lose their jobs to cheaper non-union workers. That's why the union workers are unemployed right now while the out of state workers are getting big projects.

Yes, it certainly has. The governor and senators of the state are certainly at fault. The Space Program is very important. That's why unless there are launches in the next few years by private companies, there may never be another launch in our lifetime.

I can't blame Obama here either... not without including every president since the first Bush. None have done anything about space technology. They all sat on the laurels of the past. Private space operations are further than most people realize, and now that there is no government organization doing it, I hope the private outfits step up.

If they step up, but that remains to be seen. No one really knows what is going on. He still gets the blame for the end of the Era. He was President when it happened. It was on his watch.

Dude, I'll bash Obama over a lot of things, but this just isn't one of them. Space exploration is NOT a priority. It costs a lot of money and we really aren't getting much back for it. If we're going to continue it, we need a means of generating revenue. Personally I think we've failed by not allowing space tourism. There are billionaires paying the Russians big bucks to go into space. Either way, ANY spending cuts will mean some government employees will lose their jobs. There's no two ways about it. Even if we just cut the hated IRS there are accountants, auditors, and even janitors and such that will lose jobs.

I am well aware that the Space Program is very expensive. He is President. He gets the blame for the end of the Shuttle Era. His handling of this has been completely irresponsible. I do blame him for not making at the very least an informed transition to the private sector. Even NASA doesn't have a clue on the transition to the private sector or how its going to work. But once again he spews words and nothing but uncertainty is the result.
