In your countries, maybe it is not polite to ask someone about his wage, but here in my country it is not like that, amoung friends,we usually know each other's wage. I am an engineer, electrical engineer, design NC machine, I just get paid about 600 dollars a month, an American friend told me, an engineer American can earn 1000 dollars in a week, I was so shocked, I really want to know, is it true? haha~~~though it is true, I can't change anything...can I immigrate to the USA? just complaint....anyway, this low wage is enough for my life....hahahaha~~~though it is not that much to aford some luxuries.

Dear Pujiao! There is a proverb 'All that glitters is not Gold!' and in India there is a proverb which means that, From a distance mountains always look smooth and soothing! You may be getting paid heavily in America or not that is not the question! There are various factors to be taken into consideration before taking this discussion further. The salary is decided by the company depending upon the nature of job an Engineer is supposed to perform in the Company, the role of the engineer in taking up the responsibility and the work experience! In US you need to have their own degree or else you need to complete their post graduation what they call as MS after your graduation to get a job over there! In US job is paid on hourly basis and they pay you once a week! Though they may be paying you nice salary when compared to the salary what you may be drawing here, but then think about the cost of living there, if you want to live a lavish life there you need to spend a lot and you will hardly be left with any of savings there! Another important factor is insecurity of Job, I know many of my friends who are working in America as engineers , they have been thrown by giving 24 hours notice, which I think not the case in your and my country! I am from India, here though initially a fresh graduate Engineer may start his career at 600 dollars or so, it won't take him much time to reach 2500 dollars if he is intelligent, sincere, honest and hardworking! Companies want good workers and if thy get one they would do anything for the worker to retain him as companies have already known the worth of that person! In this competitive World I always would like to retain a good skilled and talented Engineer by paying him good salary and providing him better facilities as an Industrialist other wise he may join my rival group and help in the growth of the rival company which would affect my company in long run! Thus I think you should be really happy with what you are getting in your country and try to work hard and prove your worth to the company for which you are working so that you will be getting your worth in due course of time once the concern authorities recognise and realise your contribution in uplifting their company! You should take the responsibility and act as a pivot in the company to prove your mettle! I am sure there will be one day when you will be earning much more than an engineer earning in US if you prove your worth, talent and skill to your existing company! I personally feel that there is nothing like serving one's own mother land and having satisfaction of doing it! More over we are always close to all our near and dear ones here, if we are serving at our mother land! Thanks for the discussion I liked participating in it!

Yes, yes! I am also and engineer and compared to other countries the wages and salaries of engineers here in our country is low too. This is the reason why a lot of our country's professional engineers end up working abroad for greener pastures. I'm just starting my career as an engineer so I am still okay with a low salary, but when I get to beef up my experience, I think I have to decide where to get the better opportunities. I almost made up my mind to shift a career to information technology due to high salaries and demand nowadays. But I realized I can't give up my love for my engineering course. I think working is all about the fulfillment that you want to achieve.

I am happy for you that you got a job where you have a salary of $600, I assume that you are working in a government sector. I don't have a Government job where the salary of a Engineer(Bachelor) is almost same like yours. I am sure the payments differ from place to place in the private sector where it depends on the interview. If you can brag more then you will get a good salary.

I don't know which country you are educated and license in engineering but by the salary rate you have mentioned is somewhat in a developing country like the Philippines. The US system is quite different in education and professional practice. The US has the ABET (American Board for Engineering and Technology) which accredit the engineering courses offered in colleges and universities and has the NSPE (National Society of Professional Engineers) which conducts and regulates the Professional Engineering practice. Although other countries are now moving towards the ABET set up, and still much to go in the professional engineering practice set up for the registration must not be given and controlled examination by a government but rather give it the professional society, like the NSPE. The salary rate for engineers in the US is of course much higher than other countries especially the Philippines its because of the economy and the company where you are working for. If you are young and hardworking and have a good academic background, go work in the US and enjoy the luxury you want in life, it's your choice. If you are in the forties already just stay in any coffee shops and just continue your dream.
