earlier, because we have low volume of cases to process, i went over Wikipedia and found out that NAIL BITING is a mental disorder (scientifically termed as ONYCHOPHAGIA)...
im (overly) guilty of nail biting. sometimes, i know that im doing the "act" and sometimes pretends that i don't... Nail biting is categorized under the obsessive-compulsive disorder that normally occurs during the childhood or adolescence period.
Mama often discourages me because my fingernails really look bad. I try to grow them but the idea itself is futile because whenever I see my fingernails have that white part (it's called the LUNULA),I can't help it but bite.
It's really degrading especially when friends take a look at my nails and laugh at me, but I can't really have them grow.
I read that applying nail polish can do the trick but I'm not really sure, I might end end still doing the "act" and poison myself because of the nail polish.

Hi Kat
If I were you, I wouldn't feel down just beacause your an Onuchophagist. Research shows that obsessive/compulsive behavior is a sign that your Brain can do more complicated things that normal people. Hence, you should be proud as you may be biting your nails on your left hand but your right hand may actually be finalizing the managerial report for the whole month on your office department.

I applied this pretty pinkish brown (?) nail polish two days ago... i have successfully refrain from nail biting for two days now. i believe i can pull this off. someone's got to trust me, ahaha :)
i love the part that i can finalize a report using my right hand while nail biting on the left hand, but guess what - i'm nail biting on both hands, john! aha :)

When I was little I used to suck my thumb and Mom stopped me from doing that by applying some bitter stuff on my thumb. You could do likewise!Tell your Mom. I am sure she will lend a hand!

Was the nail polish wet while biting the nails. If it is dry then it will not detract you.

I used to bite my nails when I was younger, but have now stopped. I tried everything from putting plasters on my nails so that I couldn't bite, to painting foul tasting gloss on them- however this simply made my food taste horrible and didn't really stop me from biting in the slightest.
You should set yourself goals, for example if you don't bite them for a day you'll give yourself a treat, and then try it for two days, and gradually build it up. When you've managed to grow them to a decent length, get them done professionally so that you can see how amazing they can look. You are much more likely to keep them nice and long if they look good, as you won't want to be the one to spoil them.

you know what i tried growing my toenails (i dont nail bite them ok, haha) and had a professional apply nail polish, and they look good and im happy...
the problem is that im just too ashamed and embarrassed to even show my fingernails to other people bec they really look awful... if only i can get them to grow a little then maybe i can have someone apply nail polish and start from there

I used to have the same problem, specially when I was during a test. I rarely do this now, I don't know why I stoped because I didn't did anything special. I try to go to manicure every week, so, when my nails look pretty, I don't want to ruin that. But, I always keep my nails really short, so, even if I want to bite, there isn't much nail to bite.
When I used to had this problem, I saw that put pepper on the nails could help and this would avoid you to bite your nails.

pepper? u mean real pepper?
i noticed that i nail bite often during reading or watching television, must be because my mind is busy doing something and a part of my brain orders me to nail bite... unconsciously?

Ya me too. Guilty as charged. I used to bite my nails as a habit, but I finally stopped doing that years ago. The reason was because sometimes, I would bite my nails too far down where it would start to hurt. Also, whenever I would bite down, i would get this weird feeling of satisfaction. Luckily, I stopped the bad habit before its too late. If you want to stop biting your nails, you should find some other habit to do instead of biting your nails. An example would be chewing gum or snapping your fingers when you get urge. Or maybe you should spend your time wisely and fill it up with activities that will keep you busy.

mine also hurts and the more i feel guilty when it happens. but a (bad) habit will always be a (bad) habit. i also feel satisfied (while doing it) haha... I'll try your suggestion though, i can buy lotsa chewing gum.

I used to bite my nails when I was in High School. I really cannot remember how the habit left me. It was to the point that it is hurting my fingers. I am now having a problem with my four year old daughter. I think it is over a year that I have not cut her finger nails. She would tell me that she is not biting anymore, but it is very seldom that I see her bite and I immediately correct her. Glad that this reminded me because I have to ask the teacher to watch and tell her not to bite when she gets the chance to bite her nails in school. I guess what you should do is to try really hard because it is not going to be easy. I had this habit of pulling the cuticles of my toenails while I am lying down or watching tv to the point that it bleeds because I have to force pull it. But when I got busier, I suddenly forgot about it and the habit is gone before I even knew it.

nice, good for you. but you started when you were in HS, i don't exactly remember when i started but im pretty sure its a long long time ago.
all the people around me are reminding/reprimanding me to stop nail-biting, im doing the best that i can. there are even instances that they would give me a treat if i manage not to nail-bite for some number of days. i know its pathetic :(
anyway, im on day2 now with my red nail polish. im positive i can pull this off this time.
best of luck to me, ha-ha.
i appreciate your response :P

I guess this is one habit that can be avoided if you just want to.
It is like thumbsucking.
I had one niece who loves to suck her thumb till she's 6 yrs old.
So,when she starts going to school, her classmates always tease her.
She then tried to stop it and start biting her pencil (hehehe)
later on,she was able to avoid biting her pencil too.
I am sure you can avoid it too, with determination.

i guess i lack determination jaiho :(
i will always set my mind to stop nailbiting..
sometimes its involuntary that i do the act, when i read a book or when im watching a movie, when i get engrossed in one thing, thats when my poor fingernails received all the nailbiting... and when i see one fingernail "abused" i try to abuse them all... poor habit...

I am right there with you. I have always bit my nails. In high school, people tried all kinds of things to get me to stop. I heard them say that you are eating germs. I had lemon juice put on them, but I bit them anyway. My mom bought a medicine that was supposed to stop you from biting them. It had cayenne pepper in it and was painted on the nails. That did not work. My bus driver gave me a rubber band to wear and I was to snap it when I caught myself biting my nails. That did not work either. I am 36 and I still bite my nails. I now look at it as that is my bad habit. Everyone has bad habits. Some drink. Some smoke. I bite my nails.

hi my friend first do you know what is the reason for your nail biting.
I think this is now converted into habit.you will need to try hard to be free from this habit.
I think you need to change your thinking pattern.first of all think deeply and not down on the piece of paper why do you want to leave this habit.write as many reason as you can.like,it do not look good while you are biting nail, you want to grow your nail, you want to do this,if you will quit it your friend will appreciate it,etc.
now commit your self deeply to quit this habit.before seeping and after getting up in the morning repeat to yourself that you want to quit nail biting.this will start to affect your subconscious mind.
simultaneously you need to work on changing your thinking pattern, whenever you have though of biting your nail, pinch your leg.start to break that thought everytime i comes.do not frustrate if you find it unpleasant or do not succeed early.have some patience.you want to do this heartly so do it.
I know after about one month I will have your message saying that you have quit your habit.thanks.
