Types of horses

There are many types and breeds of horses. Some are fairly common and some are a little more rare. I personally like quarter horses, but there are some other breeds that I enjoy too. What is your favorite breed of horse? Have you ever owned one of those?

my favourites have always been Friesians. they're just so magnificent and striking. we had an Arab at one point, and he had so much character. a really fun little horse.

Friesans are beautiful! I love Arabs, they seem to have so much more personality than other horses. They're also extremely smart

Friesans are beautiful horses. Arabians are good horses, but I just like quarter horses much better. They are intelligent but sometimes very stubborn also.

I think my favorite would have to be arabians. That's what kind of horse I have and I love him.

We found out last week that he had cancer and we had to put him down. It was sad and I will certainly miss him. He was such a good horse!

Of the horses we have, my favorite is quarter and Arabian mixed, but he has a stifle joint issue and I can't ride him anymore. It is sad as he is my baby!

I like quarter horses too. I think thoroughbreds and arabians are just beautiful. I pretty much like any horse though. We have several quarter horses that we own.

I love your profile pic. I love my horses almost as much as my kids. I think that it is very relaxing to climb on a horse and take a ride. I enjoy the time that I am with them.

Irish Sports Horse and Welsh. Once I had an Irish Sports gelding, 16 hand 3, lovely to ride and jump. Most hunter types are good I find all the best urban

That is a decent size gelding. I like horses that are over 16 hands but my hsuband says that I do not need one that big. I am sure that I don't but I like them.

Me too, another horse I rode was 17 2. I don't like the jerky movement of a small horse and also I always feel safer on a big horse. We don't see many Quarter Horses here. Do you ride English or Western style? all the best urban

I ride western. I have never had any kind of training so I just climb on and ride. I love to trail ride and I hope to some day take some lessons, but for now my daughter is the one who takes lessons.

I've had a Danish sports horse, a Hannoveranian (sp?), a Swedish sports horse and now I have a Oldenburger, one bred for driving, not riding, but I use it as riding horse. Sports horse because they're a mix of a lot of different breeds :-) Mainly bred for jumping, but the Swedish one didn't really have the heart for it. He looked the part, very pretty, but was afraid of butterflies. I don't like jumping though, so it didn't mather that much. The Oldenburger I have now isn't really made for jumping either. He's quite old, poor chap :-/ I think my next horse will be a "little" yellow one, a Norwegian fjord. 'Cause they're cute and stubborn :-)

I have heard of the Fjord horse, but none of the rest of these. Old horses are such good companions, but it is sad when you know that they are in bad shape or suffering. I just lost my favorite horse as it had cancer.

Hello Dear Carolscash! I love the Thoroughbreds as I have been associated with them now more than 20 years! I don't own any of these horses or even don't have any plan to own them as I know how fussy these animals are! Surprised? I am a Resident Stud farm Vet. working for one of the reputed Stud farm of our country where we are breeding the Thoroughbreds exclusively for the purpose of racing! Presently I am looking after about 350 Thoroughbreds including the stallions, brood mares, yearlings, weanlings and the foals! I have got an assistant with me to help me out! Breeding the Thoroughbreds and upbringing the foals to the stage of 2 year old when well sell them to clients is a big challenging job and though some times I feel bit frustrated I thoroughly enjoy my job! These horses are my family and I am surrounded by them as I am staying on the farm with my wife and a grown up son who is an Engineer by profession! Thanks for the discussion! I liked participating in it!

I would love to have a job working with horses! I think that they are some of the most gentle creatures on the face of the earth. I love ours. I have a colt and a yearling that I am trying to do some training with. What is the best thing to do with the yearling just to use her to ride?

I have never owned any of these horses. I had a neighbor once who owned three of them. I am not sure what kind they were though.

Did you ever have anything to do with them? Horses are such gentle and loving animals.

I've never owned a horse, but I've ridden a lot. I guess it kind of is like, the kind of horse you like has something to do with what you want to do with the horse. I rode English and did a little jumping, quarter horses mostly aren't built for jumping, oh, they can jump, but aren't built for higher jumps... Since I have LOUSY timing, and maybe did a dozen jumps exactly right out of hundreds of jumps, and the highest I ever jumped was about 3 feet, a quarter horse, who was trained to jump could handle it. If I rode western and did cutting or barrel racing, I probably wouldn't want a big racing Thoroughbred or a Hanoverian. Because of my health, I haven't ridden for many years, and probably won't again, but when I did, because I was rather small (then) I was generally put on large ponies. Actually, I rode well enough to not damage a horse, and well enough to help retrain a horse out of bad habits, but I just lacked the timing needed to be a good jumper.

I mostly do trail riding and it is all western. I would like to see my daughter do dressage, but she would not like it. She has learned to jump and do some obstacles. She wants to do barrels but I don't think that she is ready for that yet.

I have always wanted to ride a Tennessee Walking horse. I like the ones on the Budweiser commercials too but I can't remember what breed they are. I have rode Quarter horses before..they are very easy going. I like them too. My friend had a Mustang but she was abused before my friend got her and was very hard to handle...no way I was riding her. I wasn't experienced enough for that...maybe it was bravery I was lacking..lol.

My daughter rides a Tennessee Walker. She really likes him. The ones on the commercials are Clydesdales and they are really pretty. We also owned a rescued mustang and it scared me. I never rode it, I just really like the quarter horse.

I had a friend high school that was an avid lover of horses. everything in her bedroom had a horse theme. she knew every breed by heart. i always liked mustrangs because they always seemed to be so wild and free. The untamed beauty of a horse can not compare with anything else.

Mustangs are beautiful horses, but I have never seen one that made a good riding horse. My daughter loves horses too and her best friend is having her room decorated with a horse theme so I am sure we will be soon too.
