Can plants and other life forms also enjoy music?

I enjoy gardening. Some of my friends who do gardening with a level of passion greater than mine tell me that they grow plants best when plants are "exposed" to classical music. While they are in the garden, they play classical music, loud and clear, not only for their own enjoyment, but also for the plants'. Friends aver that flowers, fruits, and vegetables are more verdant and luxuriant, more beautiful and productive, if classical music are regularly played to them.
Can this be true? What faculty do plants have that can be stimulated by music and transport them to a sense of joy, well-being, and contentment?
I have also read that animals respond to music. Of course I know trained dogs respond to spoken commands and whistles. But plants responding to music? Any opinion about this? Do you have any information if any university have conducted or are conducting scientific experiments on the effect of music on plants?
