WARNING: MetaCarpal Fracture (Broken Hand)

All our body parts are important, no doubt about that, but how much care do we provide for our HANDS? I got conscious because last week, I saw one of my colleagues supporting a hand cast - he said he must wear it for the next six weeks because he acquired a fractured metacarpal. We have five metacarpal bones (one for each finger). These metacarpal bones support the hand, and each end of these bones form the knuckles at the back of our hands. We work as back-office processors so most of the time we are in front of our computers, typing and typing the whole 8 hour shift. Normally, metacarpal injuries can occur from sport injuries, falls, fist fights or punches and even car accidents - we didnt know that it can also be acquired because of the nature of our work. The symptoms are not very visible at first. My colleague just complained that he experienced tolerable pain in his left hand, after a week he noticed swelling followed by some bruises. Until he can no longer take the pain anymore, he consulted a physician and was diagnosed with metacarpal fracture. Again his treatment included using a cast for 4-6 weeks. He was also advised to take gentle hand motion exercises. He was lucky enough that he didnt have to go through a surgical operation. Again, let us be cautious in the way we use our hands.

Wow, so did your friend get this metacarpal fracture from using the keyboard? I have heard that typing can cause carpal tunnel syndrome, but didn't know a fracture could happen.

It is very truth that every parts of our body plays an important role for the proper functioning of our body and our life. That's why we must take good care of them since they are priceless to us. Thanks for sharing this story. In fact, i never knows that doing a daily job of typing can also caused such a serious problem to our fingers. Seems like, it is time to take very good care of our body and health.

Yes my son fell off his bike several years ago and landed on his hand, he did not get badly injured except for some pain in his hand. He did not think much of it until the next day where it ballooned badly. I immediately took him to the emergency room, where he was diagnosed with a metacarpal fracture. He did wear a hand and arm cast for 8 full weeks which caused him to miss out on the season of football. It was said by the Orthopedic surgeon visits he might need surgery. He did not as he recovered well and to date has had no issues. I was not aware that typing on the keyboard can also cause this, I will into it further as I am a high keyboard user. Thanks for sharing.

I did search a bit yesterday to make sure I am doing the proper things as I am a very heavy computer and keyboard user. I did come across this website which helps a great deal. I am using the gel on the keyboard, but I am not sitting properly as it says, so I will be working on some of what the link explains: (This is not a referral link) http://www.wristhand.com/ergonomics.html

the doctor advised him to take light motion exercises on his hand (the fractured one)... and also resting the hands once in a while so it doesn't get too much stress.. do you know about the proper hand posture when typing? this helps a lot in reducing tension in our hands...

Can you explain, what kind of habits are there which can result in the MetaCarpal Fracture? I don't want my hand to get the fracture so if you know more about it, please share here. Thanks and have a nice day.

the most common causes of hand fractures would be accidents (mostly accidents from sports; like a boxer, punching with closed fist). another cause will be landing on the back of your hand from a fall; and can also come from muscle stress (the muscles attached to the bone becomes tired from using them too much) - in my colleagues case, too much strain because of typing :(
