Do you leave your computer on all the time?

I do - unless for example we get a powerout, I have to manually restart it because it freezes, or it restarts itself after installing updates. I encountered a person yesterday who called me stupid simply because I don't shut off my computer. Are you STUPID? Do you also not shut off your computer? LOL! If you DO shut it off, why? Do you use it infrequently? Do you have nosy parents, spouses, or roommates or children who would get into your things without saving or telling you? I genuinely have no reason not to leave mine on.

No I do not shut any of our computers off here at home. I do have them networked together that we can actually log into them from the outside. In order to do so they must be on. I do on rare occasions, shut them off to refresh and reboot. But generally I do not turn them off. The laptop I use most commonly had been on for four years and the PC for about 5. We use our computers here often and for hours on end. I don't have anyone other then my boyfriend here and none of us hide anything, lol. We don't have any reason either to turn them off. I don't think anyone to date has called me stupid for it and have logged in from the outside on a pinch. I have not noticed any changes in our electric utility bill and as a matter of fact we use to have 5 on all the time, when the kids were at home.

I LOVE your response! I swear sometimes certain things only make sense to other people who think alike. I have never misrepresented myself in any way to make the average person think I do anything just like everyone else, so it never should have been a shock lol. I have other electronics running constantly too.... cell phones, dvrs, dvd players, e-readers.

mostly no... i used it mostly around 4 to 5 hour then turn it off for an hour then turn it on again. I also turn it off when i'm sleeping. There are several benefit if you turn off your computer, first it safe your electrical bill, second your computer will last longer because electronic component have a lifetime too... My computer is about 10 to 11 years old... Today people sell computer that consume power below 30 Watt, maybe if you like to leave your computer on you can buy this computer...

I haven't suffered any ill effects of leaving my computer on constantly. I found it odd that so many people were quick to tell me all these detrimental things that occur - I think I would notice if our electric bill spiked because the computers were running - or that the computers blew up from overuse

I've read pros and cons for both........I personally don't think it makes much of a dif if you leave it on or shut it down. I shut mine down simply because my cooling fan makes a high pitched whining noise that would drive me crazy when the house is quiet and I'm trying to go to sleep.

I do turn mine off, sometimes several times per day. It is so hot here in the desert that I must turn it off. The computer gets overheated (along with everything else in the house) so if I don't turn it off soon I will have nothing to turn on or off

The computer, and myself, are right in front of the kitchen window. So, when the sun starts it's western shift, this place is HOT! I got sunburn on my arm and I hade the shade pulled down

I do not turn my computer off except for in power outages, when it freezes or when it restarts after updates either. Otherwise, my computer is left on. It is set to go to sleep after a certain amount of time to conserve electricity. However, I do not turn it off. There are a lot of things on my computer that have to start up when I turn it on. It is easier and faster just to leave it running. My children do not get on the computer until they are given permission. Therefore, I do not have to worry about anything not being saved or them getting into anything. I really do not see a reason to turn the computer off and on all the time.

LOL! You gave pretty much the same reasons I have for leaving mine on. I do turn off the monitor but there's no reason to turn off the tower. I always look at things this way - the benefit has to outweigh the inconvenience. If it doesn't, then I will do something different that does. My daughter asks before she gets on one of our computers, and obviously she can't get on either of them if we are both using them.

I always shutdown the computer completely from the powerstrip. It saves on energy and with that, it also keeps my electric bill down. Why give more money to the electric company. I wouldn't call you stupid that is not nice maybe you just didn't know better. I think even shutting it down completely helps in case of a bad storm that if your computer is still on it could do damage to the computer's pc.

Oh no.... I 'know better'. It is just a big inconvenience and wastes time to shut it down every time I go away. It is much faster and easier to just shut off my monitor. I believe that people forget, there is all sorts of waste. There is 'waste' of power but there is also 'waste' of time. We also have a power surge protector and a generator that our computers are plugged into, so they are protected in case of an electrical storm.

But I would never call you stupid mommyboo. I know a lot of people do leave theirs on all the time but my computer nerd son says turn it off when you go to bed so I do.My roomie never touches my computer thank goodness for that. My goodness its 8:44 pm already so I will be shutting down soon although I would love to mylot til 11 pm but my roomie would have fits so I don't do it.anyway we are woke at 6 am. so we need some sleep I guess. I would like to keep my computer on since the time it's switched on. It's the convenience for me to do my computer work online whenever I can at any free time on and off. May be there are lots of mess installed in my pc therefore it needs quite some time to be ready for using I don't have extra time to wait for the pc to get ready. The time wasted would be considerable if doing the undesired time wasting on those on and off procedures many times in a single day. So I usually would shut down my pc only before going to bed

6 AM? Really? I don't think I'd want someone to wake me that early unless I had a reason to be up lol. My computers aren't that noisy, plus I have a ceiling fan in here that's on 24/7 and another fan we just point where we need it that is also on most of the time. It helps so we don't have to run the AC all the time. The fans help block out the noise from the computers! I'm actually getting ready to leave now so I will shut off my monitor but leave the computer on - because when I return, I may want to pick up where I left off here!

Perhaps. It is probably a negligible amount and I found it odd that someone would make such a big deal about it lol. My feeling is that if someone prefers to save every single ounce or milimeter of anything, that's well and good, but for them to expect everybody to do the same? NUTS. lol!

I usually turn my computer off when I am done for the night. I heard it's good for them to have to reboot occasionally. I figure it saves a tiny bit of energy as well. So that's been my practice for quite some time now. I don't really know if it makes a difference, but it kinda makes sense.

I reboot mine occasionally if I absolutely have to, but it takes so long for my box to boot back up and be ready to use again, it's not something I can just do in 30 seconds. That's one reason I don't do it. I don't tend to shut my cell phone off much either, even though I always hear I should do it at least once a day lol.

I have two computers. One I use for fun stuff, and the other is my work horse computer. The work horse is a Mac Mini. It has no fan, makes no sound, and go into sleep mode automagically after about 30 minutes. I leave it on all the time. The game fun time computer is a Windows PC, and it has 5 fans, makes tons of noise, and uses tons of power. It also makes tons of heat, and bad thing in the summer time. So when I'm not using it, I shut that sucker down.

5 fans? Good lord lol. Mine is quiet unless the power supply goes out.... I'm sure our computers add to the heat in here but like I've explained before, shutting mine down constantly would waste more time than I am comfortable wasting. I am very aware of time and how we can't get any of it back lol.

I turn off my laptop to save energy. I usually surf on my study table and then when I'm done, I shut it down and put it in the bag. I do all these just to keep things tidy.

That's one reason I shut my laptop, plus it is too easy when the kids are running around for them to possibly knock it over if it's not closed and I'm not sitting there lol.

Yep, you don't want your laptop broken just because you left it open. Plus, I have a dog. He drools everywhere. I don't want my keyboard swimming in drool.

Unless I am doing some stuff, I would usually switch off my laptop when I am not using it. First, I can save energy and second, I do not want my laptop to go kaput or burn itself up.

If you're not using it, it goes to sleep... a laptop does anyway. With a desktop, just shutting off the monitor works fine.

When not in use, I switch off my computer for fear of getting it damaged due to voltages fluctuations we have on the electricity distribution lines, which have been damaging my system very often. If such a fear is not there, there is no need to switch off the computer. What you are doing is right.

I do not leave my computer on if I am not using it. The main reason that I do so is that I always try to save on electricity. It is okay to leave it on, but it is embedded in me and I am used to saving a lot so nothing no matter how small go to waste. It was not nice though that you are being called stupid just for that.

See, I shut off lights if they aren't being used and I go nuts if someone leaves a door open and my AC is running. I run ceiling fans all the time though, the computers, and generally there's always a tv on in here too.

I noticed that the first few people who responded to this discussion thinks it takes power to keep your computer on. It takes more power to turn it on after having it turned off, than it would take to just keep it on. Or so my boss at work used to tell me. Our IT guy always told us to leave them on because it took a lot of energy to restart them after turning them off. Just because you leave your computer on doesn't mean everyone can see what you were doing on the computer, if a person is worried about a nosy parent or spouse because you wouldn't leave it at your email box or anywhere where they can read what you were doing. If you just leave it at your desktop no one would know your passwords to get into your stuff to see what you were doing so that's not really a reason to shut it off. So I leave my computer on all the time and I have no reason to shut it off. Good luck and happy mylotting my friend, Chris

I don't turn my computer off either. When there is a powerout, as I have a laptop, I will simply close the top part of it. I do so, mainly to save power and such.

I close my laptop whenever I'm not using it, and it locks and goes to sleep. I honestly don't think it uses that much energy when it's on but not being used. I've never specifically graphed it or anything but I'm sure it's not some huge power sink like some people try to tell me lol.

I don't, because I'm not all the time at home. I go to work into the office and there is another computer. Also, in the office, computers aren't ever on all the time. But computers have energy saving system that stars when you do not use them. Maybe if you use it almost all the day, then you don't need to shut off the computer.
