Homework before fun

Back when I was a child, I always was made to do my homework first by my parents and that does make a lot of sense in many ways. I mean, you want to get as much time to get your work completed as you can, in case there is something a bit more tricky than you thought. This is more certain people who go into higher levels of education. Plus you can get your homework out of the way and not have to worry about it later. I was taught this as a child and it carried on. So its a good idea to get your homework done as soon as possible.

hi megamatt! i was like this before during the early stages of studying. coming home from school, my first order of business is to get my assignments done. i was really studious back then. when i went to high school, it was the same. i was even doing my assignments for the next day while at school during my break time. come college, it was really different. all those time studying was replaced by partying. lol! no regrets though as i had the chance to enjoy my college years and i was still able to graduate with a degree on time. hahahahaha! nowadays, as a parent myself, i try to convince my daughter to finish her assignments first before playing or watching tv. most of the time it works as a charm. however, there are days that it seems that the only thing she wants to do is play, play, and play! i don't stress though and let her play. i even play with her but i do tell her that after a specific time of playing, we will be doing her assignment. i try to explain to her the importance of prioritizing and completing tasks. it is a continuing process but hopefully she gets it down to pat. i try to lead by example. of course, i want her to enjoy her childhood and have time to play but at the same time i want her to do well in school. anyway, like i said, it is a work in progress and the best that i can do is to balance study time and play time for my daughter until she gets a good grasp of it on her own.

'...many people do measure their success by the degree in their hand.' i agree with what you wrote here but while i do believe that a degree is important other things in life are as important if not more important than a degree. i try my best to inculcate this thought to my daughter. study hard and graduate with a degree as it is one of your avenues to succeed in life. at the same time, there are other things in life, loved ones, family, friends, personal happiness, that are as important if not more important than the degree that we hold. your post is very insightful and thanks for sharing it.

Your road tends to be one that many might take. I think that in the end, many people do measure their success by the degree in their hand. And really, there are going to be a lot of times where its hard to find a balance at any level. I think that with each passing generation it does tend to get harder and harder, but in general the same principles really do apply. Schoolwork does tend to really demand a good majority of our time now more than ever before. It can be a tougher balancing act some nights than others. Thanks for responding. Its appreciated. Have a nice day.

We too were made to do this every single day when we were younger and studying. I still see the same habit with my brothers who are still in school, however, unlike before, it seems that they have too little time theses days and too many assignments or homework to be completed. I guess there are differences in time because I can't really blame the internet for it because my brothers really do their homework and not dwell with Facebook before they're done with the assigned works. Have a great MyLot experience today!

I think you just need to accept that you are a student and a students' priority is studying and not extra curricular activities.

There are many times where the amount of homework can get slightly out of hand. I think that in many ways, teachers are stuck in a different decade and have no sense of scale. When you factor in the amount of extra-circular activities that some people might have, that's leaving them a few hours at most to do homework. If you get like four or five teachers that assign you an obscene amount of homework, expect to take some long hours in. I've had nights where I did start right away and was still struggling to get everything done as I was nodding off back in the day. Thanks for responding. Its appreciated. Have a nice day.

Hi megamatt! That's really my habit before. But now I seem to do it at the same time that I'm having fun. ^^ Ever since the advent of computers, Microsoft word and all that, I have been doing my homework, reports, papers, while playing games in the computer, surfing the net and all the breaks I can do from typing and writing. Just like today, I'm writing a report and while I do that, I surf the net, myLot, Facebook, my yahoomail, etcetera. SO before when I used to finish a paper within a few hours, now, I finish a paper for a day.

The Internet does offer a lot of distractions. I do wonder if I had been able to get things done a bit quicker if it was not the Internet. Yet there are a few times where I have to take a sanity break. At least I really try to not do that the day before its do. If its a longer term project, I'm rather relaxed but I still don't wait too much time. Still there are a number of distractions available in this day and age with the Internet. As useful as the Internet can be, this can take us off task. Thanks for responding. Its appreciated. Have a nice day.

I have to agree becuase I also do this, especially if the work or task is really blowing my mind away and draining all my brain juices. Sometimes, I go up for distraction to just entertain and relax my mind but I go back to what I am working and try to finish it as soon as possible.

Yes, I have the same set up when I was young. It is really great to do such considering that you will surely enjoy more once your done with the hard things. As I have grown up, I do the same with the things I do in life.. may it be work or perhaps activities... Eventually, I later realized that what I am doing is something like delaying gratification. Doing all the hard things first and from there enjoy.. It really makes sense and will eventually lead to success and more happiness.

Indeed it is really something that does tend to work rather well. Getting all of the hard stuff out of the way. That way it is a weight off of our shoulders to say the very least. We never truly know how much work we have to do, no matter how much we think of that fact. Therefore we are going to get some things done, and are much better with getting it done right away. That is just the nature of everything and it does lead to success. Thanks for responding. Its appreciated. Have a nice day.

Hi jpso! Glad to see you in this thread Sir! Before anything else, i'd like to thank u for getting me into this site.. You can see, I just hit 300 haha, I have been active since I signed up. Thanks to you! Hi megamatt! I am not so tight with rules when it comes to homework, I let my son play and watch TV when he comes home from school. It is okey for me if only later after dinner he will do his homework. I know how exhausted he is when he comes from school. I am a cool Mom. I just asked him if he already made his homework without checking his notebooks. But I have no regrets for being so lax because my son was accepted in one of the best Universities in our country and he is graduating soon. Maybe his intelligence runs in the blood?

For some people, homework is in fact the fun I think. Others might violently disagree. For others it really does depend on the subject to say the very least. Then again, after eight hours of school in this day and age, with about three or four more of our free time on top of that, that really does weigh a lot to say the least. Your mileage may vary. Thanks for responding. Its appreciated. Have a nice day.

I totally agree with this, but face the facts that not all students follow this unset rule. I'm going into my final year of high school and I think that it is best that I follow this rule better, as I will do better in school.

Sadly, I really do think that you are correct. In fact I don't think, I know that you are correct. There are going to be a number of students who don't follow that rule. That is really something that is to their own detriment in the long run. Those who do this will do a little bit better, for the most part. However those people who do follow this rule are the exceptions, rather than the rule. Thanks for responding. Its appreciated. Have a nice day.

That is true gianni123, because we are individuals are we have different kinds of style when it comes to studying our lessons. In high school students, when MOST (but not all) of them involved in extra curricular activities, sometimes they just don't follow exact order to what things they have to do. They are not organize, they don't know how to prioritize, they only do things that they are interested to. That's sad fact.

Yes, definitely so! Its always work first and then play…even we were brought up the same way. Study till 9pm and then you are free to do whatever you want. However, these days kids have so much to occupy their mind that its really difficult to keep them away from the TV and computer and make them study. I too have a timeline for my son but it’s a really battle to make him stick to it, without his concentration wavering all the time.

Yes it can be a fight for many parents for to be sure. Not to mention that there are children who want to buckle down, get their homework out of the way, but there are a number of temptations. I think that also it is a way different time now than when I was growing up for sure. There was no Facebook, barely any Internet, no YouTube, no any number of places. Yet its changed. Thus is the nature of life in the end. Thanks for responding. Its appreciated. Have a nice day.

That's great advice, but not advice that i would of appreciated hearing as a child. I guess that's all part of being a good parent is convincing children as painlessly as possible which paths to choose and options that are available to them wisely. I never was a fan of homework but now that i am grown up and i havn't finished school i wish i had, not really so i could go onto university... but that would be amazing to have a university degree. But just for myself so i could say i had completed school when applying for jobs etc.

Yeah I think that many people would not appreciate it as children. It is really something that we are going to really look at with the benefit of hindsight to say the very least. There are going to be a lot of times where it is up to the parents to rather impart the wisdom on their children, to really make them consider the fact that the homework is an important element for sure. Thanks for responding. Its appreciated. Have a nice day.

This was a very fine habit instilled by your parents. The reason being, i have seen little children delay doing home work. They later get tensed and can't do their work on time.Once you complete your home work early your tension subsides. Then you are capable of studying or playing without something nagging you at the back of your mind.

It is all too easy to keep pushing your homework back. I mean, if you don't start right away, and you start doing something else, how many people will have the self control to stop at a reasonable time. Not without any external interference at the very least. So getting it done early, then it will not be weighing on you to say the least. Thanks for responding. Its appreciated. Have a nice day.

As a child, I do not need to be reminded about studying first before I watch the Television and since there were no computers back then what comes next is play time. I was always self discipline even back them. I drink my milk before going to bed and brush my teeth and say my prayers. At 9pm lights out for me. I got to play the next day when I'm in school. My kid is a bit different from me. I compromise with her by letting her rest first after school and allow her to play but I see to it that homework should be done before fun because there are a lot of things that a child can consider as fun such as playing games with her friends and computer games.

Yeah there are a lot of things that are far different these days, then there even were about five or ten years ago, never mind twenty, thirty, or whatever. It is rather funny to change. Yet the simple underlying principle is really something that is true, that homework is to come first. Of course those diligent people will figure out a way to do the vast majority of it during periods of downtime at school but then again, many never figured out that secret. Whatever is left, its recommended to be done. Still this day, far more temptations are around then the days that I were small. That much is obvious. Thanks for responding. It is appreciated. Have a nice day.

I still do this even now becuase I get worried that if I play too much or succumb to to many distractions and indulgences, I won't have anything done. Granted, I seek the comfort of distraction and playing hooky from time to time but they are times when my mind goes blank and nothing comes to my head when I am supposed to do some work. I try to do things different and away from work and after that activity, my mind gets refreshed and refocused. I guess I can do things at the same time but it takes also discipline to make sure there is output at the end of the day. This works for me but I don;t know if others prefer this method as well.

It is extremely easy to really get caught up on all of the fun things in life. There are a lot of people who simply lack the discipline and therefore it is rather easy to get tied up. Even those who do have it, its very easy to lose track of the time. Plus it did give me a rather sound peace of mind and allows me to get completely everything that I need to get done completed. Thanks for responding. Its appreciated. Have a nice day.

Very good point when you think about it. There are times where we are going to be a bit beaten down for whatever reason, especially in the older grades. I tend to feel tempted myself to take a short break when I was really burned out. However it is just really in my nature to get that homework done a lot of the time and that's just what I do. Someone else may be different and if it works for them, then great. Thanks for responding. Its appreciated. Have a nice day.

Hi megamatt! For me, and in my experience as a mom, I made sure also that assignments are done before going back to school in the morning. When my son was in the grade school, I was very loose when it comes to making homework. I know my child was exhausted from school, so i will give him more time to recover the mental stress and oxygenize his brain before doing it or else the lessons won't be absorb. I allow him to play upon arriving home, and watch TV, too. A couple of minutes after dinner, that is the time for him to do his assignment. With glucose replenished and energy regained, I think nerves are again ready to take in the lessons.

It does tend to work a lot better for different children. I really do think that a lot of children would be more at ease with getting the homework out of the way, when their minds are still in the school mindset. There are other children who do need a break. In the end, the same end result is it should rather be done before it is due naturally. Although with some things, the longer its put off, the harder it is get to business. Thanks for responding. Its appreciated. Have a nice day.

I prefer fun before homework, i always needed a break from school work when i got home. I would play video games or street hockey until supper, and then do my homework after, and it usually worked out pretty well. Although this last year (grade 12), i did homework until 9 at the latest, and put an hour aside for fun after that. I think this helped me manage my time and avoid distractions like facebook so i could finish by 9. This taught me how to better manage my time, but I still took a break before my homework if i dont have much.

It really is down to the amount of homework that you have. There are some nights that I think that I got a rather light load. Then there are times where I think that one or more of the teachers were having a bad day and just unloaded a lot of homework onto us, as punishments for what was happened in their lives. There are a number of distractions for sure, so I tried to remove myself from them and get done. Because it is very easy to catch a case of "five more minutes", and then eventually its late at night, when I really don't want to be doing homework, much less starting it. Then again that's just me and what works for me. Thanks for responding. Its appreciated. Have a nice day.

I agree this is the best way to do things. It keeps you organized and more responsible when you get older. From doing that you will learn that work is more important than going out and partying all the time.

It does set a pretty good tone. I am all about fun as the next person but got to get down to business first. Got to get what you need to get done, done. Then you'll have plenty of free time without the work hanging over your head. That is really all that there is going to be about it. So yeah it is a good practice for sure and it is good to get that ingrained early. Thanks for responding. Its appreciated. Have a nice day.
