Give Me Your Money

So there I was minding my own business and walking down the street to fetch my wife at work. I felt something on my hip and I turned and there was three young men behind me and one was just trying to pick pocket me. When I turned it startled him and he said give me your money. I grabbed his hand and twisted it and held on very tightly. I said give me yours. He looked at his friends for help and they just stood there and stared. Well now here I am a 6'2" American holding this guys hand so hard he went to his knees. Well lucky for me a guard was standing about 20' away (armed with a shotgun) and he grabbed the kid and said do you want me to call the police. With that the other two ran. I looked at the kid and said what do you think. He said nothing. The guard did not speak good American and he started yelling at the kid in Filipino. Well we let him go. I was afraid if I had the police come that later on the kid might retaliate against me or possibly my wife if he saw her with me. What would you have done? Should I have called the police on him?

You are in philipines. What u have done is right because you are an american and u can be identified any time in future. However take care in future when you go over to that side. I would have also done the same thing.

hi ravisivan,
even if in the philippines, and of different nationality, everyone has the right to complain to the authorities when they are harassed or oppressed in some way or another.
i for one is a filipino. when i see kids asking for alms, i ask them where are their parents and to go to them. they should ask their parents for things not other people. mostly these kids are part of a syndicate so beware.
still i am hopeful that the government take all the street kids away from the streets. their place is either the home or the school.. not the streets.

Thanks ravisivan, I will be careful or more careful than I was in the future.
I have retired early and yes I still do some work on the computer but I have been looking to start a business. I just have not come up with an idea for one yet.

It's a good thing you acted well my friend. with you 6'2 frame, you can very well defend yourself. They will be too afraid to retaliate.
So you got a taste of those thieves. careful next time, because they might have a deadly weapon with them.
In my opinion, you should have called the police so they will learn their lesson.

Well good thing that nothing bad happened to you. Better be careful next time because there are lots of crazy people too you never know what they will do and never trust them too easily not even the police, not all but some.

I'm glad I was not hurt and I'm also thankful that my wife was not with me yet. She was very upset when I told her what had happened. They are probably lucky she was not with me because I think she would have swung at him...lol

no. you should have called the police.
but since he is a kid, he will not be locked in the cell because there is a law that minors up to, i think, 17 years old has to be handed to the dswd (dept. of social welfare and development by the police).
this way, the parents will be notified and the kid (hopefully if not tolerated by the parents to do what he did will be corrected).
if kids are allowed to do like that and are not apprehended, they will go a plenty and then when they retaliate, you will no longer be able to take them one by one because of their number. see?

Yes I understand...well it's to late now but I will in the future. I think the guard knew who they were and maybe he said something to the parents. Oh well, to late to do anything but a lesson learned...thx Ann

I think you are in the middle of difficult situation. If you called a police, the kid may not be on jail because he is a minor,,, You let him go, still it may not guarantee you that he may not do that again to you. It is lucky for you, you have defended yourself. What if next time turns much worst???
These kind of problem comes not only in the Philippines. It is because of poverty that became more worst. I hope the government will come to the right solution to this problem...

Yes...this is not a problem confined to the Philippines. There is good and bad no matter where you go or what country you are in. I guess governments have their hands full with this sort of thing...thx Dagma09
