Saturday and Sunday are technically the weekend in America. Those are the two days of rest that many Americans get off of work, but not always.
Some people will say that Friday starts the weekend when they get out of work and what they mean by that is that starts their downtime, basically, where they can relax and not have to work or worry about work.
If you hear a phrase like a "three day weekend" or "four day weekend" or something like that it means that people get an extra day or two off besides Saturday and Sunday. This means they have either Friday or Monday off (or both) and that happens mostly when there's a holiday. For example, if Monday is a holiday then there will be a three day weekend in that people will get the weekend off (Saturday and Sunday) plus a weekday that they don't normally have off.

I will speak for all of America for I am a true American Hero (among rats).
We are greedy. We claim both days as the weekend. AND Fridays after 5pm. AND sometimes Mondays when the banks are closed for holiday or we are too hung-over from Sunday night. Often Thursdays after 5 as well because the parties start Thursday night and we can always call-off "sick" on Friday.
I wonder how anyone could look at us and think we're a corrupt hedonistic society?

Here in the USA the weekend is Saturday and Sunday. The problem is that there are a lot of people that might work these 2 days, so this is not considered their weekend. Sunday for most is supposed to be called the day of rest as it time to go to church and worship god, and then come home and relax and get ready for your work week ahead. The problem is anymore in order to work somewhere most people have to make sacrifices and work whatever hrs. available.

Friday after work is typically considered the start of the weekend, but Saturday and Sunday are technically the weekend days. Not all people have these days off of work, like me, so we rest whatever days we do get off.

Both Saturday and Sunday are the weekend in the United States. People might take one day to go out, and the other day just to rest at home. People usually consider Friday night to be the start of the weekend and will usually go out and do something on Friday.
