Hi Friends :)
I don't think it is same with all. I mean most of people thinks like this that fat people eats more. Even in movies they shows the same thing few times.
About me, I was thinking the same way too. But after meeting a big guy(a very good friend) I have to change my thinking. He really eats quite less in compare of me. In fact I know many thin people whose having quite heavy eating habit.
May be its depends on person..... I don't know.
What you think about it ??

Hi akp
It is the same as we say "we cannot judge a book by it's cover". I know several overweight people as family and friends and they do not eat much. Sometimes it genetics where they do not have to eat much and yet are still overweight. Some people have hyper thyroids which causes them to gain due to it.
So it really is not fair to say they eat a lot or all the time, and that is why they are over weight. Some people are naturally born this way and basically eat a proper diet and can have low metabolism where the calories do not burn as easily.
This reminds me that also, there are skinny people who eat loads and can't gain an ounce, some can have hypo thyroids and or very high metabolisms.

I do know some overweight children who have very skinny parents, so it could be from the grandparents genes.

i think it is more appropriate to say that people who eat more generally will become fat.
but of course, there are exceptions.
one factor is an ailment in the thyroid gland. this gland would eventually affect a person's metabolism, thus causing that person to lose or gain weight no matter how much s/he limits food intake.

If the person eats less and still becomes fat ,he may have hypothyroidism;in which the thyroid gland secretes less thyroid hormone, the body will have slow metabolism, which results in weight gain.On the other hand,if the person eats too much but still losses weight,he may have hyperthyroidism;in which their is an excess of thyroid hormones. The body's metabolism will be increase which leads to lose of weight. There are other diseases that can lead to weight gain or loss,it's not merely the amount of food consume that determines the person's physique.Sometimes lack of activity is the factor.

Hi akp, it has to make sense, so food is what makes people fat and our assumption that fat people eat more is right unless the person has some disease where he has some harmonl or glandular imbalance which makes him/her gain weight. However if a person is normal and fat, it is understood that he or she eats more.May be your friend is now dieting and trying to lose weight and that's why he eats less !

Well... As far as I know he is eating less since starting of our friendship. I have never seen him eating more. But I can't say about his eating habit at his home. But I guess he is not used to eat more.
Yes mostly all time more eating causes the heavy body. but yes sometime due to some health problem it can arise.

Well most of the time, fat people eat more.
Now there are some situations where someone eats less, but works a lot less. If you don't use energy, you are going to store up weight.
I generally do not eat much. But I also don't work much. My last job, I would sit in a chair for 8 hours, only getting up to eat or use the restroom.
So I gained a lot of weight.
It also depends on what the person eats. I've seen guys wolf down massive salads. Huge portions. But they are eating leafy greens and stuff that really doesn't add weight.
Another person that eats one meal a day, but happens to eat a Triple McFatty burger every day, may weight a ton, even though he's eating far less.
There are many factors.

I have a hard time believing that.
Look at North Africa for example. You don't see ANY over weight people in north Africa (unless they are part of the rich elite), and the reason is quite obvious. They have any food. The average north African doesn't have the ability to buy whatever food they want, and thus they eat very little.
And none are over weight.
So.... if being fat had something to do with health issues, are the Africans all immune? Is the 'illness' or 'disease' that causes obesity somehow isolated in wealthy countries?
Somehow I doubt the Africans are super human. I wager they simply don't have the ability to over eat, and therefore are not over weight. We rich people, shovel food in our mouths, and that is pretty much why we weight tons.

Metabolism is so much more important than amount of food, or even quality of food.
The teenagers in this house eat everything all day long and look like poles. The Fat Man here eats one relatively healthy small meal a day and a smaller breakfast but he's 60 lbs overweight.

They don't necessarily eat more, but they usually tend to eat "junk" or "fatty" foods much more often than they should. This results in the body shape that they have. Also in addition to the body shape they have, they may have acquired it from genetics. For example, the people in Hawaii, in the past suffered famine, therefore there bodies adjusted to utilize energy much less resulting in bigger bodies, so that they could survive longer with the stored energy in their bodies during the famine. Now however, with food being readily available to them as being part of USA, they no longer need that type of metabolism, however, their bodies still have it, that is why you will see many "fat" Hawaiians no offence.
Also, bigger people may have large stomachs but slower metabolism. To see them eat so much is just because of the habit of always filling themselves up, instead of just satisfying the stomach.
In your case, you may have a great metabolism that allows you to eat more, as you burn energy faster. If you have ever seen eating competitions, there is one very popular champion, Takeru Kobayashi. This man can eat way more than anybody in a given time, and it has been proven. However, he is not fat. In fact, he is a body builder with a six pack, with a relatively small frame. Because of the energy he burns his body can take in a lot of calories a day, and with this slowly changed his metabolism to be incredibly fast. Not to mention Kobayashi also has something weird going on in this stomach, I believe his stomach is like extended allowing it to be bigger than normal people, search him up ^^.

I know some people have weight problems because of medical reasons but the majority of people that are heavy is because they eat more calories than they burn so it stores in their body as fat.
That is how our bodies work. As long as you burn the calories you took in for the day you won't have to worry about getting fat. If you are already fat, because of overeating, you have to be eating a lot of calories to maintain it or you would lose it, plain and simple, burn more calories than you take in.
But there are the exceptions. Some people have problems with different things in their bodies that can control their weight. Some of those things are thyroid problems or metabolism problems or other organ problems, or now they even say our brains are wired genetically to be fat or not but we can change the wiring by retraining our brains to think differently. I just something about it on The Biggest Loser last night. They had a brain doctor on the show checking the contestants brains to see how they were wired and all of them were wired to like food excessively. It was really quite interesting.
Cheers and Happy Mylotting ,
Chris

Could be he is eating when you aren't around or could be he has a medical problem. Has he been to a doctor about it? It might be a good idea for him because he could have sugar level problems too since most fat people do.
I used to be fat but I lost 50 pounds in the last three years, now I am only slightly chubby. I don't want to loose any more weight because I am good the way I am.

That's really cool. Yes you don't need to do more if you think you are average. I mean having average body is good.
ABout my friend, I don't think he is eating more when I am not around. I mean its not easy to hide this thing all the time. But I can't be 100% sure. As far as I know he is not having any sugar problem. But surely he should concern with the doctor about his weight. I have told him also but I don't think he will take me seriously.

Well, that's interesting, I never heard something like that.
Yes not all people used to be fat because of overeating.. but yes majority of them are fat because of overeating. About me, I am having average body, but I know someone who used to eat much less than me but still he is over weighted. But well, can't be sure about its reason.

Im so glad you came to see the different way of thinking. I dont eat any more that i ever did. I used to be compared to the model back in the 60's refered to as Twiggy. Im now overweight. Anyway i keep hearing things like its not how much you eat its what you eat. Im not to sure about that either. I dont eat junk but i used to when i was Twiggy. I believe its in the genes.

I think most fat people are eating more than ordinary folks. This is the very reason why they grow fat. Nevertheless there are those who are fat becomes of some abnormalities in their hormones. But as for fat and obese people around me and I know personally I would say they do really eat a lot so that I could imagine how fat their colons have really gone. I can't help but feel sorry for them because they don't seem to care about how they've been putting their health into risk. I just wish they could someday decide to cut down their food intake.[

Actually it is true, there are people who gain weight without eating too much. It is because of their metabolism, there are slim people who eats a lot like me but I don't gain weight. Women who gave birth also gain weight.

Hello AKP,
Its not necessary that fat people eat more.
Some people tend to eat more & more and do less physical work compared to the calories they take which get accumulated in the body forming cholesterol of fat.Lot depends on the person's metabolism and the eating habits. Person who takes oily food, fats are more likely to be fat as they could digest it proportionally. But to say that fat people eat more is wrong i also have seen thin people eating more than fat people still they remain thin.

Yes in these days oily food and junk food are quite popular. But they are surely not good for health. So better choose proper and safe food. Yes this oily, junk and other heavy food can be reason for fat. But food is not the only reason for heavy body. There are many other reasons too like you have mentioned above. Thanks for sharing..

Yes, being fat doesn't necessarily mean that you are over eating. It is just a question of body metabolism and human genes. I think there are people who gets easily fat even if they eat less. I do know too of other people who are fat but doesn't really over eat. There are a lot of factors to be considered to in terms of body build.

Yes, I do believe that genes and hereditary factors affect the body built of individuals. I for one came from a skinny family and I am really having a hard time beefing up my body weight. Also, some diseases and abnormalities may affect the body metabolism and fats production too.

Personally I have known skinny people that eat enough to feed a horse and then some and never seem to gain weight, and I know people who are heavy with Low metabolism that I wonder how they survive. Many would even think the heavy people are bound to be Diabetic, have High blood pressure, etc. Yes, some of these things can and do happen but there are people who are skinny who suffer from this as well. I think personally if people would quit judging others so much and stereotyping everyone and worry about themselves more it would be a way better place to live.

Whilst many overweight people eat more than other people, it is not always the case. Somebody with thyroid gland problems or other medical problems may put on weight without eating too much. As a therapist I have known overweight people who have shown me their diet sheets and I have advised them to see a doctor, and get some tests before thinking of dieting even more. _Derek

Most people with obesity would have problems eating healthy meals daily and not being active. These people would skip breakfast, which is the most important meal of the day, other occasion meals, or choose unhealthy foods that include fats, oils, and sweets. These people would also have emotional issues that could lead to their obesity. It is just the fact that many fat people just do not watch what they eat, but instead, indulge themselves into unhealthy choices which could lead to numerous health problems.

I guess not all the time. There are certain factors that needs to be considered. I can think of two:
1. Metabolism. It is said that if a person's metabolism is high, he can burn easily the food that he eats. So, no matter how much food he eats, he does not get fat since he has a high metabolism. Comparatively, a person with slow metabolism that eats the same amount of food with the one with a higher metabolism will surely get fatter.
2. Genes/Medical Condition. I had seen in the news about a week ago about a girl who has this rare medical condition of being overweight (in fact, no weighing scale can now determine how big she is). This condition is not governed by the amount of food that she eats.

No, it does depend on the individual person. I know several heavyset people who do not eat very much at all. It's also a matter of metabolism. Many thin people have what is called a "wasteful metabolism" - it just keeps going all the time. Other people may have a slow metabolism, and it also slows with age. There are many factors.

Hi akp!
Do I think all fat people eats more?? Yes, generally I will assumed they eat more by just looking at them. That is a general assumption we made when we see fat people around. We can't deny that. But there is an exemption. Some of them are fat because of the genes, some because of illness but we will not know it except if we know that person very well or know his/her family history. About thin people who eat more, it probably because of their high metabolism rate.(^^)
