Have you ever written an appeal?

I had to write one for my youngest son recently. He's in need of medical treatment...very expensive medical treatment that his medical insurance doesn't cover. I had been sent a notice stating that he was denied and that I could appeal it. So, that is exactly what I did.
However, I'd never written one before, so I didn't know what it should say. So I did a search online...
Good thing I did too, because the one I tried witting for him was nothing like what I had found. So I tweaked it here and added things there, so that it would look more "official".
I'm still waiting to hear back from them. I hope to God that it works, because if this is denied as well I don't know what my husband and I will do (if you have any ideas they would be greatly appreciated). We really need to get this done for our son...
(This is one of those times I wish we were rich. )
So, what about you? Have you ever written an appeal? What was it for and what was the outcome?

hi sacmom when you are an older would be university student who wants to complete her BA in English you often have to write a letter of appeal to the particular University you need to enter. As the U of Ca at Irvine Ca was the closest and I had an AA from Junior College I appealed to U of Ca at Irvine and they finally did accept me as I had a 4 point grade average so at 54 I entered the U and Graduated ag age56. But mine was not nearly as pressing as yours. I do hope that your appeal is granted so your son gets the medical treatment he needs.

Thanks Hatley. I hope so too.
By the way, I know this is a little late, but congrats on graduating college at that age. I never went myself so I had no idea an appeal was needed to get into a University. That's interesting to know.
Who knows, maybe I'll be able to go one day. Even if it's just a junior college...
Happy mylotting!

I have not actually written an appeal but I have written answer to appeal or like a reply memo. This i do in connection with my work in the office. But as I read those appeals, I have the idea that important points, issues and justifications were written in an appeal so that the addressee will reconsider and eventually change its previous decision.
In your case, it is an appeal written to a medical insurance company. I understand that the insurance company also has its own policies and regulations with regards to coverage but I really do hope and pray that your appeal to them that your son's case be covered by the insurance be granted. I know it is difficult to find medical treatment especially when the financial capacity is not sufficient. God bless and I wish your son to get well soon.

My doctor wrote one for me. And then she got on the phone when the appeal was rejected and reamed the guy who was in charge of the HMO (this was many years ago). She finally got him to okay the expensive treatment by asking what would he want done if it was his daughter. So she resent the appeal and it was then approved.

Wow, I hope they listen to your appeal and though I have never written one, maybe I should learn myself as we seem to get into situations where we have needs that are not met..Let us know how it goes, I hope they do approve this for you and your son...

Personally when it comes to Medicare Care, there are many times I wish I was rich. Then I would not have to go thru the hoops each time I want to get a Medical procedure done, and then have to wait and see if it is approved, or if a Doctor will even consider it. Right now been dealing with worrying about my Chronic wound.
But I have never had to Write an appeal yet. I have always been Lucky lately to have everything approved that has been submitted. I do know I am lucky, and feel that I am finally getting the care I deserve while many others are being denied. Hope that this letter will work for you and your Son gets the care he so desperately needs. You are in my thoughts and Prayers.

In my entire life, i have not written any appeal letter for anything. I've only written a 'parents letter' to my own advantage, as well as love letters for my gf back then.. lol =D Other than that, especially in singapore, when we need help on important stuff, we would turn to our constituency leader, get them to write all sorts of letters on our behalf.. lol =D That's how well protected we are. But of course, it would be better if we learn how to write it though.. haha
Hope your youngest son is receiving his right treatment now

I have never written an appeal before. It's something I wouldn't know how to begin either, though I know a lot of places have appeals. When it comes to insurnace I bet the process is a bit lengthy, but I hope that you hear back from them soon. Insurance companies have way too many rules and regulations for things I think!

You could be right.
The letter stated that I should hear something within 20 days, I think that's what it was. And I mailed off the appeal in the beginning of the month. So it should be any day now...(I hope!)
Keep your fingers crossed for us!

I have never written an appeal. I usually take my complaint to the HR department..lol...make them work for their money.
I would definitely research it before I tried to write it. I would make it as detailed as possible as to why your son needs the procedure. The doctor suggesting it might be helpful too. They can sometimes send a specific request and reason. A second opinion might be good too. If there is more than one doctor suggesting it, it might carry some more weight too.
It's a shame when money determines health. I wish you were rich too.

Well I seerously hope they ammend their decision. I was in the same position (sort of) with trying to get health insurance through my state. There was a policy (no one under 21 if you live with a parent) that had just gone up from the policy being 18. I didn't really know how to do an appeal letter either, so it turned out to be pretty much an angry rant letter. A woman from the state callrf mr back a few days later to call and explain to me why it was that I was denied from the state health care. Not sure where you live, but as soon as I sent in an appeal letter, a court date had been automatically set up for me (regardless that I talked to that woman from the same office). She just told me that I should reapply in a montth or two when I am 21, which I was fine with. Anyway. I had to call the judge assigned to my court date to withdraw my appeal. As I wasn't looking to go to court I was just looking for some answers. Not sure where this is leading lol. Hope they make an exception for your son. Keep us posted.

Mine turned out to be a sob story.
I didn't know if that was the right way to go about it, so that's why I decided to look it up. I found out when writing a letter like this one, we should just stick with the facts. So, that is what I did...with a little pleading at the end. What can I say? It couldn't be helped. It is for my little boy, after all.
I'll be sure to keep everyone posted. Thanks!

You are a citizen of USA,. is it not? I think some charities do help. a relative of mind had problem --that she needed a lot of amount for treatment -- in fact she is only on green card - her son made request to some charities and they took the bill. I am unable to give more details about this. Other mylot members will give more guidance to you in this regard. good day.

I have written a lot of appeals to the government, not for myself, but for farmers. It takes long, but on the whole, the appeals have been quite successful. The mere fact that the appeals are written not only surprises the concerned government agencies but also puts them on their toes and on the spot. It does help that the Philippines has a law that commands government offices to respond to communications within 15 days. The IT revolution and the wiring together of government offices are also factors that facilitate the speed and quality of response and action. But dealing with government bureaucracy still takes time, patience, and "presence." Keep your presence known and don't be absent from activities that have bearing on the matter you are pursuing. And stand erect and maintain the bearing of the Sovereign Citizen who has command over public officials and pays their salary.
