Ted Danson? What do you think?

I recently started a discussion about Laurence Fishburne (aka Dr. Ray Langston) leaving CSI. I read today that his successor has been chosen and it's Ted Danson... yes, formerly Sam Malone on "Cheers", among many other roles.
I'll admit he never entered my mind for a second as someone that they'd have considered for CSI but apparently they approached a lot of high-profile actors including Robin Williams. Danson got the gig.
How do you feel about their decision? Do you think he will be good for the show? What do you think he brings to the table for a show like CSI?

I quit watching CSI when Gary Dourdan, who played Warrick, left the show. I didn't ever even like Gil Grissom, which is the character they seem to be trying to hard to replace. I think Ted Danson is a good fit. He got nominated for his work on the drama Damages, so apparently he does drama well.

LOL and cheering for shirt removals! "Complexity" is the word I was looking for, purplealabaster, thank you! Gary's portrayal of Warrick always seemed so realistic to me. His frustration at wanting to work for the greater good and not being able to "color within the lines" and follow the rules was palpable. His gambling addiction would actually add tension just watching him having to process a crime scene in a casino ~ you could almost hear the conversation he was having in his head! I'm not surprised you reacted so strongly to his being killed off the show... a really good character (and actor) will definitely bring that to the table!

I haven't watched much of CSI since Grisom left. I have seen a few episodes with Laurence Fishburne and I thought he did good. I think he just didn't have the charisma that Grisom did. I like Ted Danson, but I don't know how he will do on the show. He has played a lot of joking characters and I don't know that he will fit in with the cast.

I feel pretty much the same way that you do, Ravinskye. I really liked Grissom in CSI, and I think that the show lost a lot of its edge when both he and Gary Dordan left. It is not that I didn't like Laurence Fishburne, because I did, but he just didn't bring the same level of ... I'm not sure ... intensity maybe that William Peterson brought to the show. I can't see Ted Danson bringing it, either, but I guess that we will just have to wait and see.

Yup I agree with you both... I liked the Ray Langston character but I feel they were going for something "mysterious" with him... as though they never wanted you to fully know his back story. I think that was a disservice to the character overall because I always felt like I wanted to know more but it would never materialize. Quite a letdown, especially since Fishburne is such a talented actor. He could have brought so much more. But, bottom line, I'm a Grissom fan too and miss William Peterson very much. I can see Ted Danson playing a corporate guy, a bureaucrat... but in the context of CSI? not so much... but I'll give it a chance, just to see :)

I think of Ted Danson as a comedic actor so it will be interesting to see how he fits in a drama series. I have this vision of him coming in and being the big, bad boss that none of the team members like. That's what worries me. I don't want to see that happen. Maybe they are going to have him be a bumbling idiot, which would be good as long as it's not overdone because the show still needs to be a drama (though I've always loved the comic relief they provide with the lab guys). If they approached Robin Williams then I would say they are looking for someone to add some comedy to the show.
He can't be a Grissom or Langston, so what other character traits can they give him to make him different?

I have been away from TV for so long,it is Dr. Langson that replaced Grisom? I think maybe Ted might do a good job, who knows, because I think of him as more comedy like Cheers, but I have seen other actors do well in a different genre...

I'm a horrible one to ask but I bet someone else reading this thread can say for sure :) I actually work nights online, myself, so I don't watch any nighttime television. I catch up on a couple of shows, like CSI, when I can during the daytime (I watch the Vegas one before any others but, if it's not on when I get a moment to sit down, I'll catch Miami or NY too). It's not the most efficient way to follow a series, I can say that much, and I do find I miss some critical eps... but I do my best to keep up because I really enjoy the show.

It is still on Wednesdays at 10? See, since last fall, I started taking online college classes and I am usually too tired to watch TV once I am done with my work..And though I am taking only one class this summer, it is a bad class for me, a math class and math is my weakest subject, so much so that I am spending too much time trying to learn my lessons..But I was told tonight that I can't continue to work up until bedtime, to quit an hour before and do something else, so I figure watching an hour of TV would be relaxing enough, but I can't remember when each CSI is on...

For some reason after the few guest appearances and references that William Peterson made recently, I thought that he was going to be written back into the show. I am pretty sure that my mom read something about it in one of her magazines as well, but I guess that it could have just been rumors ... or maybe they were trying to come to some sort of an agreement and it fell through. The best thing, in my opinion, would be for William Peterson to return, because I really think that his character helped to enhance all the other characters.
I liked Laurence Fishburne, but I didn't like him as well in his character on CSI as I have in other roles that he has played. I believe that I have seen Ted Danson in something that was not a comedy, but I can't remember what it was now, which suggests that it was not all that memorable. I just don't see him bringing to the show what it will need to survive, but I could be wrong.

Actually, everything I've read so far said that Petersen agreed to come back for a few guest spots, as you said, but he was done with television. He wants to do a CSI movie instead. He said that's why they didn't kill of Gil or have him die of a brain tumor...but he wanted the movie to be made before the CSI tv show ends because Grissom would be like 90 years old by that time
My initial gut reaction to Ted Danson was one of skepticism but I'm willing to watch to see what he's going to make of the character he plays. I like the show so much that I'm not ready to give up on it

He's getting older, for sure (aren't we all LOL!!) but I still find William Petersen to be a very attractive man I completely agree with you that I would watch a CSI movie... but, given my choice, I'd love him to come back to the series. There are some relationship dynamics he had that I totally loved... like his interactions with Lady Heather? wheeewwwwwww! I also find his connection to Catherine to be very kind and sweet. I just really like his character - well written and very well executed.

LOL @ "he wanted the movie to be made before the CSI tv show ends because Grissom would be like 90 years old by that time" Yeah, Grissom is already getting "up there" in age, although in televisionland they can suspend a person's age for several decades, so he still has a little time at least.
I thought that originally Peterson wanted the break from CSI to do plays. The play he was doing ended, which is why he agreed to do some episodes of CSI. I think that the movie would be really good, and they could take it in so many directions, especially since they do not have the same time limits as they do with the regular episodes. I would watch the movie, but I still am hoping that Grissom will make a more permanent return to the television show, too.

Never watched Cheers, only have a very vague idea what it was about :-)
Somehow, it would have been nice to have someone that's not too high-profile, at least if they're going to be in the series for some time. I'll watch it whoever replaces Langston though. One of my problems with him was that they somehow tried to replace the most senior member of the team with a newbie, so they tried to turn him into some CSI wonderchild. Not that the science in CSI is very realistic (too perfect, too fast etc) but rushing through learning it made it even less realistic.

It will be nice to (hopefully) see someone who will grow into the role but you make an excellent point -- I never thought of them making Langston a "wonderchild" but that's really what they were getting at, you're right. I'll watch it too, no matter whether it's Danson or another person down the road. It's a shame... Fishburne's a great actor... I can't help but feel they could have done a great deal better by him.

Oh some people definitely suggested that at the time of Grissom's departure because they couldn't envision the show without him. I'd hate to see it fold up all together, since I'm definitely a fan, but I guess it remains to be seen how many character shake-ups it can live through!

When I first read the headline announcing his hiring into the series, I admit I thought "ughhh... I don't get it." I guess I thought they might go with an actor more visible or known in the police/crime genre. Then, I thought that maybe Danson will bring some new and fresh direction to the show. I'm unsure but willing to tune in to see what he actually does. I just hope he doesn't become like Horatio Caine (CSI: Miami) is for me... can't stand that character and it bothers me pretty much any time he's in a scene!

I just can't see Ted Danson as a CSI. I guess in my mind he is type-cast as a not so serious person. I would have like to see Al Pachino in this role.

I know that he has done serious roles but I think there's an overriding sense that he's a comedic actor. Wow.. Pacino.. never would have thought of him. I can see by your choice that you would favor a very strong, probably more "aggressive" male in the role?

He's done really well in quite a variety of roles so I'm curious to see what he brings to the show. I enjoy it very much, even with the character changes, so I'm anxious to see what the new dynamic will be like!

Wow! Danson has alot of years of experience under his belt. He has played the goofy bartender on Cheers, a smart allec doctor on Becker, a highly unlikable character on the legal drama Damages and now on CSI. I wonder how it will go? I don't think they will be able to replace Grissom and Danson character might draw a crowd at first but we shall see.... Grissom was Grissom and he helped to mold the show. I look forward to seeing the first episode. On the other hand, I do feel sorry for Fishburne. I don't see it as being his fault that his character Langston could not fill the shoes of Grissom!

I would be really interested to read a truthful interview with Fishburne to learn his thoughts and impressions of his time on the series. I agree with you completely. An actor can only be as good as the role that is written for him/her. I just don't think the Langston character was well-developed at all. Fishburne is a really good actor with a lot to his credit ~ I think he could have been featured in a much stronger way. I think, too, that Danson's character will draw an initially curious audience because he is well-known from other shows.

He has done some serious roles, most recently Damages on the FX Network but the problem is that no one ever thinks of that. For a lot of people he will always be Sam Malone. Which will make it hard to not see him that way on CSI.

I agree with you, crimsonladybug. He does have good work to his credit (and he certainly has the Emmy nods/nominations to prove that other people think so too!)... but Sam Malone, to me anyway, is like the soundtrack of his career - that one role from which you can't disassociate him. I see his face and I immediately think of Cheers.

I think it's like Law & Order--none of the replacements ever brought the same "something" to the roles, but sometimes they ended up being better--only time will tell!

You're very right! Law and Order is another show that has gone through its fair share of cast member changes! I agree that each actor or actress brings their own personality to the show so you never know what the impact will be until you give it a chance. I'm interested to see what Ted Danson brings to the overall cast dynamic. I miss Grissom, like so many other people, but I'm willing to accept that the show can change or evolve and still be something I enjoy and want to follow
