Hacking Wi-Fi

So I read this crazy story today, about a guy that hacked his neighbors Wi-Fi and did all sorts of horrid things to them. Apparently he did this out of revenge and even made threats to the Vice President and so on. Does the fact that anyone can download a program to hack into Wi-Fi scare any of you? And even if your Wi-Fi is secure, is there things you can do to prevent it?
