When I was a little kid back in the Jurassic Age (you know, the 50's, in the last century), my grandmother, with whom I lived, would, on rare occasion, fall too ill to go to the hospital. In those days, doctors still made house calls. They'd do minor patching up, take temps & listen to your heart, & prescribe medicine or even give you a shot, but for anything more serious, they'd tell you to go to the hospital, or at least take 2 aspirin & come to the clinic when you felt better.
Then they stopped coming altogether, & unless you could come to see them, or get a ride to a hospital, you were on your own.
Well, many years passed in this way, & then a few years ago, several doctors realized that they could actually save on overhead if they banded together in a non-fancy clinic, or were even just conveniently listed in the phone book as a "clinic," even though no patients visited them. They could rent a small building to house records, take phone calls, store pharmaceuticals & equipment quite cheaply, & farm out nurses or nurse practitioners most of the time to come to client's home. It is far less expensive, but it benefits the client by being less stressful, too, making healing easier & faster.
I "belong" to one such "clinic," called "House Call Doctors," one of 2 such agencies in Austin, & it's amazing what they've been able to do for me! I've had blood drawn, physical therapy, heart monitoring, EKGs, EEGs, x-rays & other things done in my own little apartment! Not even Grandma's family doctor, Dr. Turner, could do all that!
So! Did you know house calls were back? Is there such a "clinic" in your area? Have you had occasion to take advantage of it? What did you think of it? Tell us!

That's a wonderful idea but we don't have it here. I never understood how I was supposed to get to a doctor's office if I was so sick that I needed to see someone. I remember the last time I got sick, years and years ago, my husband had to take off work to drive me to the doc because I was too sick to drive myself. Why would I see a doctor if I was well enough to drive?!
I hope this catches on!

Very good point there! My hubby had to come in from work and take off a week of work when I found out I had to have surgery abruptly.

Alas no we don't have anything like that here Maggie , I wish we did though. I would probably have a panic attack when they pulled into the drive way ,but that's another disorder and discussion ..lol I would love to not have to drive all over the place to see my Doctor.

I can remember the doctor making house calls when I was about four years old. I think it is great. Another benefit is that you are not exposed to everyone else's germs, like you are at a public health facility. You might need routine labs, but go in and sit around all the sick people and you are likely to catch anything. I do not think we have anything like that here.

Hiya MP,
Yep I still remember the Doctor coming to our House when we were ill. He came in a big Black old fashioned Car full of Sweets in the back Seat and he used to pick me up and take me out to the Car.
He would let me choose all the Sweets I wanted he did not do this with my Brothers though just me.
Although he did not have all those gadgets listed there he had a good kind heart and a lovely Irish accent that I can still remember even now.
Think it´s great that sort of thing is coming back again there must be so many People that cannot move around very well and they need help sometimes.
There is only one Doctor I know that goes to your House and you have to pay him for the Visit but he is very good though.xxx

That is neat. I sure didn't know that. I doubt that we have anything like that where we live though. We live way outside of town so it would cost them alot in gas and time to get here.

I live right down the road from you in San Antonio and I don't know of any such house call agencies. However, if I did I can guarantee you that I would utilize their services. Sometimes just having that extra care would do wonders in healing faster in my opinion.

There are clinics in my area - which is odd considering that I live in the boonies. I grew up when the internet was young so house calling doctors are as foreign to me as the Chinese language! Still, I am glad to see them making a comeback! I hate going to the hospital. My germ phobic level skyrockets and there is nothing like being around hundreds of sick people to make you feel better.
I have never experienced the clinics before as I was blessed with iron health. The worst I have had in my lifetime is an upset stomach.
