I want to make some files in my ‘My Documents’ and ‘My Pictures’, password protected, I don’t have any idea; please help me.
Though we have 4 computers and laptop in home, any member of the family can use any other members.
So for safety, I think password protection is a necessity.
Do you use your computer alone or any other members too use it.
Please respond and share.
Thanks in advance.
Kalyani ‘Namastey’. .
God bless you.

I have my own laptop and hubby has his too as well as our son. But sometimes because of the differences in the specs of our computers, sometimes my son would use mine if i'm not using it and my husband too. Today i have downloaded an application called evernote which i can put all my documents, notes, pictures with a username and password. It works for windows as well as mac users. One more thing that i love about evernote is that i also have it in my ipad and android phone and whatever file i add up in one device syncs with the other device.
So if i'm out of the house and i need to write something for my class and don't have my laptop with me, i just write it down on my ipad or my phone and save it in evernote. When i arrived home, i just open my computer and log in to evernote and everything is in there.

There are a few ways to get this done.
1)You could make your account password protected, which is quite obvious.
2)you could zip the files using winrar with password protection.
3)you could hide the files. which in my view doesnt give you much protection.Because anyone can change folder view options and view hidden files :D
4)The best way id say, is, The folder lock software . The best one ive found is "Universal shield". It not only locks your files with a password, but also makes the files unavailable in system search. And you dont have to extract the data time and again to access it as in the second option.

I have never password protected my files. My niece would always set up her own log in when we would share computers so that we couldn't read her files. Each person could set up their own login on the computer if they wanted to have some privacy. I am almost always the only one to use my laptop so I haven't found it necessary to set one up, but sometimes when my brother comes over he insists that he needs to use my computer and then he complains that I have too much stuff on it. It makes me want to set up a guest user for him. He just says it's not necessary to do that.

Earlier, my computer had this Guest user thing, but last time, my son formatted it and it is gone.
Thanks for response.

You could set up user privileges and logins and all sorts of stuff but, in the end, Admin has all privileges and can see everything anyway. So that probably won't work (and it's way too much effort!).
The easiest way is to grab a copy of WinRAR or WinZip (assuming you're using Windows) - or some other file compressor.
These allow you to create zipped (compressed) archives of your files and apply a password to that archive. For example, you could put 10 documents (or however many you want) into an archive called "Personal.zip" (using winzip) and set a password. The zip file can be opened by anyone, so they can see what files are in it, but they can't extract and open the individual files without the password.
Probably the simplest and cheapest solution.

hi kal,
this is a problem too in the office. i am not knowledgeable in computers and i only learned the skill through self help. i mean, i am just a user. when it comes to trouble shooting, the problem stays there unless a technician comes along.
we have this router because the office uses i think 8 units. and we have networking. problem is i wanted to put a password on my "secret" files but i was told by the technician it cannot be done. but my boss insists that it can be done. now, who is telling me the truth? i am thinking maybe the technician is just lazy.

hi,
i think its better to make your file hidden and the second option is try to look an application that can protect your files from other people, like what i did to my personal computer,i just make my files hidden and i am the one only who can view it.
