This question probably gets the most varied answers by those trying to answer it. Moreover, there seems to be no person who can frame his/her answer in a single sentence, and get satisfied with his/her answer. Urge to be more beautiful in answering lingers on for ever.
Anyway, I try to frame my answer here ex-tempore, although I have given a lot of thinking on the subject and have written many articles on this.
"Beauty is that attracts the beholder, fascinates him/her, and arouses an interest that continues for long if not for ever".
The topic came to my mind on seeing a profile picture of an African woman, which I found to be beautiful. The picture could not be loaded here for being on an incompatible format.

hello friend,
beauty is a quality in a thing or person that gives intense pleasure or deep satisfaction to the mind. but what could be beautiful to someone may not interest another, so i guess it always depends on an individual.
have a nice day.

Purpose of Nature in creating beauty is providing pleasure to life. Without beauty on earth, there could have been no pleasures.

Beauty really depends on the person looking at the subject. There are arts that can appear beautiful to some but abstract to others and I think it's the same as when you're looking at women. There are some women that some find attractive but I don't and that's how it will always be. Beauty varies from every individual.

Yes, it is the subjectivity of beauty for its lying in the eyes of the beholder.

What I am saying is that seeing something without judgement is seeing beauty, true beauty. Seeing with judgement is just putting labels on things. One of those labels we may call "beauty", but I do not believe that that is what beauty really is.

Yes, 'seeing without judgement' is your beauty, not of the person in front of you. What attracts is the beauty of the other person.

I think that there is a recipe for beauty, but it differs slightly for everyone and we all have a different opinion on who we do and don't actually find attractive. For example, my best friend has a boyfriend who she is crazy about, however none of us find him in the slightest bit attractive so it just shows that everyone has different taste in the world. You should never base your opinions on what anyone else thinks, because you have the right to find people attractive if you want to. At the end of the day, we're all in charge of our own lives.

Beauty is a subjective matter, but attraction may not be for beauty only. It may be for many different reasons. So, beauty and attraction are not always interlinked. An attraction may change but never a beautiful thing.

The answer to this question, I believe, is no longer in the realm of the common sense. Because beauty isn't just limited to the physical and moral characteristic traits of a person, it simply goes beyond that. We tend to see beauty in a work in art, in nature, in music, in a song. So who decides what is beautiful and what isn't? Is beauty inherent in the thing itself or is it in the eye of the beholder? And why do we consider some face as beautiful and others as homely? Nobody has ever taught us how to distinguish a beautiful face from a homely face, and yet by instinct we spontaneously know, why? No wonder why the ancient Greeks placed the study of beauty on a category on its own, called aesthetics (as distinguished from logic and ethics). However, for the sake of following the discussions here, I will try to limit the definition of beauty to a person's physical characteristic traits. A recent study conducted by a certain agency (I simply forgot what it was), showed that a person's attractiveness is directly related to health, fertility and material well being. Meaning, by a general consensus, most would agree, for example, that to have an athletic build is to have the most attractive body of all. To have most of this world's goods could also make you very attractive. It seems that our definition of what is attractive is determined by our instinct for survival and the perpetuation of our race in general.

Thanks for adding a new meaning to what is beautiful - aesthetic. The beauty comes out to be a subjective concept by all considerations.

For me beauty is useless if you don't have brain and if you don't worship the only true God Jehovah your not success in the Armageddon time.

A pleasant day Sir,
There are a lot of ways as to how to define - what is beauty.
As this word signifies a lot in ones personality. As you have mentioned, beauty is that attracts the beholder, fascinates him/her and arouses an interest that continues for long if not forever.
I agree to what you have said and mentioned.
In addition, beauty can also symbolize the traits of an individual. As this attitude is somehow immeasureable. And cannot be seen by the naked eye. Thus the true beauty of a person is not only seen on his/her outside appearance, as this lies inside his/her heart.
Thru the beauty that he/she practice inside his/her heart, the beauty of the person stands out because he/she has a beautiful heart. And this is immeasureable.

Even inner beauty is reflected out through behavior, hence may easily be realized. Exact measurement of beauty is impossible because it highly subjective.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Sounds cliche, but it's true.
Each and everyone of us differs in our perception of what is beautiful. What is beautiful to me, may not be beautiful to you. Some may look at the outer appearance for beauty but others would base on the inner self of the person.
For me, it should be both.

Yes, beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder, but it is relevant to outer beauty only. Of course, beauty is a highly subjective thing. Thanks for participation.

I think facebook does not allow downloading its pictures. I tried that but could not do. I won't say she is beautiful, but very attractive and sexy.

I definitely think that beauty comes from within. If you are a wonderful person and you have excellent qualities and treat others with care and respect, there is something that shines through, no matter what your physical appearance, that I find to be what beauty really is. People can be physically attractive but if they have terrible personalities, then their physical beauty is marred and I cannot look at those people as being beautiful at all. But thats just my personal opinion!

Not at all your personal opinion, but this is the universal opinion as can be seen from various comments in this discussion. You are right in this respect. But there exists a link between intrinsic and extrinsic beauties.
Intrinsic beauty makes a person contented and happy. This reflects on his/her features, expressions and health, making him/her beautiful extrinsically. Conversely, if a person is beautiful extrinsically, he/she is treated by others as someone special. To maintain this status, the person behaves carefully not to hurt anybody, so becomes beautiful intrinsically.

Yes you are right that beauty is that which attracts the beholder but it is not completely true because this whole process is like a two way transmission or like barter system .
Beauty is an urge , a personal idea of perfection which is always present in the mind of beholder and as soon as he come across any person or thing which matches with his own personal idea of perfection he declares it beautiful . So if more closely observed it is the projection of idea of beauty present in the mind of beholder , on the individual or object which makes that individual or object beautiful .Therefore beauty is subjective thing rather than objective .That is why there cannot be a single or unique opinion about beauty because every beholder has his own idea of beauty .
In second step attraction takes place which is flow of energy from the individual who has been declared beautiful by the beholder . So in one way it is an outcome or consequence of projection of idea of beauty by the beholder .

Attractability of a person may change with time, but the beauty remains intact, it being the impression on one's mind. Thanks for giving a thorough thinking on the subject.
