What is in a Name

India
July 14, 2011 3:25pm CST
In the modern world, a person may carry three names as his/her identity - his/her birth name, his/her pen name, and the informal titles given by those in contact. Birth name has little impact on personality and is not reflective also. But the chosen pen name gives a lot of meaning to the personality. Similarly, a person tends and intends to become what his/her contacts want him/her to see.

My given name, Martha, means "hard worker". At least, that is one definition of my name. The odd thing is, although I was named after my paternal grandmother, I have grown into the correct meaning of my name, long before I ever knew what it meant. I have worked hard all my life and, even now that I have fibromyalgia and arthritis, I still work harder than most people I know. (I just have to take more rest breaks these days. ) I do it because I enjoy it, thankfully. I have had a life where I had to work hard to support my family but I never complained. The way I see it, the harder one works, the healthier the body and mind, unless you go overboard and work takes over your life. I always knew that boundary and never crossed it. Number one priority in my life was my family and happiness. I've worked just enough to provide for the needs of my children with a little left over to have fun with. I wonder, if I had been given my sister's name and she mine, would I have turned out differently? I kind of doubt it since I enjoy so much. I do what I do because I enjoy it and, if that means I'm more active than most, that's fine with me. I've never heard anyone complain, anyway. Of course, there is also my member name here in myLot, mentalward. That actually comes from something I saw a long time ago. Ward is my last name and once, while shopping in a gift shop, I saw a sign that simply said, "Mental Ward" and I thought that was funny, especially since my first name begins with an 'M'. M. Ward COULD stand for Mental Ward and my life has been crazy so that's how I chose my member name.

Aha, so frank, open-minded and truthful a friend I have in you, my dear Martha. I feel honored to be your friend. You have proved worthy of your birth name without even understanding its meaning. That is great of you. If everybody does the same thing, there shall be no evils in the world, because no name is based on an evil. My dear, I notice, you always carry with you your diseases - arthritis and fibromyalgia. This has penetrated deep in your mind to sub-conscious level, and it may be harming you or not allowing you to be relieved from these diseases. Please, get rid of these at mental level, and try to ignore them from your life. This may help you to fight out better with problems of life. Even the name 'mentalward' is not a good reflection of your personality. Please think over it. You become what you project yourself to the outer world.

Thank you for those beautiful compliments, rambansal. I am also honored to call you a friend. I will take your advice about my physical issues and work on putting them out of my mind. It is hard because I am so active and that always leads to me hurting worse which, of course, reminds me of why I hurt, but I will do my best to put these illnesses out of my mind. I have recently been thinking about how I would love to go back to work in an office but have been afraid to even try because of my symptoms. Perhaps, if I can learn to ignore the medical diagnoses, I can learn to control the symptoms and, maybe, actually be healthier. I used to do yoga but have felt that is too much for my old body these days and have been thinking of trying Tai Chi, since it's impact on the body is gentler. (I am 59 years old.) I would love to talk more with you about changing the way I think about my body and it's limitations. Now, about my username, that is and always has been a joke. I have a great sense of humor and love to laugh. I've never really thought of myself as living in a mental ward or that life is totally insane. It has felt a bit out of control at times but, for the most part, I am happy with myself and my life and 'mentalward' is just something to laugh at.

I have thoroughly researched on Yoga and other spiritual practices and found them to be frauds against humanity. Just lead a simple usual life, and you are fine. 59 is not much of an age to be worried about. You are lovely and lively. Keep it up. All the best from this mental...ha ha ha..

I believes names (at least in the Western) world have lost a lot of significance. Parents most often name their child a name that they like the sound of. Meaning is secondary. As you said, the names to do reflect much about the person except maybe who some of their ancestors were. That is about it. In this case, a name is an identification, something to call a person besides "person." There is not much more to it. Pen names however can be a bit more personal. It can reveal if that person likes the simple or the more fanciful or complex. It can also reveal tastes. But again, many pen names are chosen for look or sound rather than meaning.

Yes, people have been ignorant of significance of naming, making names irrelevant to respective personalities. Phonetically good names too may have some impact or influence at subconscious level - a point to ponder over. Thanks for participation and providing your valuable input.

You can imagine the behaviors of a Swallow- always swift, ever happy in competing and oversensitive to anything. These are my characters in real life. My real name is Martin and sometimes I hate myself for making quick decisions without rethinking of the effects or the out-come of it. It can sound irrelevant, but I believe a name has a very significant role on someone's life.

Hi Martin, you are great with your attribute of 'quick decisions'. I not only practice it but assert on it in my writings on management practices. It provides enough time for an amendment/readjustment as compared to a delayed decision. One thing need be kept in mind. Decisions whose impact can not be reversed must be taken with care and using ample time.

As I said above, name given by others at the time of birth is irrelevant to life. Go ahead with a name that truly reflects on your personality.

Every name should have a meaning attached to it so that it defines and contributes to your personality .But nowadays naming is just a method of tagging something so that we can recognise him or sort him out easily from a large pool of peoples . What people today practice is not naming but tagging - putting a unique alphabetical code around someones neck , and it will not be surprising when people will start using alphanumeric names in their real world . Naming was a very genious invention made by all ancient cultures as they gave more importance to life with meaning or purpose rather than just living out of compulsion .

Yes, Satya, modern ways of naming have made names irrelevant to the personalities named. But the name chosen by a person for himself, or given to him/her by the society are still meaningful.

How true and insightful! I have my birth name, but my pen name (here) is Joyfulone. Joyfulone is because I'm a happy person, and also because I'm a cancer survivor and am really grateful and joyful to still be on this earth lol. Joy is also a legitimate shortning of my birth name. Then too, I have many nicknames. Some of the nicknames are because people could never pronounce my maiden name. From that, I have been called Zikki or Zeke for most of my life by close friends and co-workers. As a nurse, many of my patients, and a few relatives, call me 'sunshine'. While I might not always feel like a ray of sunshine myself, I try and bring a little sunshine into their lives. Have a sunshiny day rambansal!

Oh, my dear Joy, you are the source of joy for everyone coming close to you. It is said that one may give only what he/she has. You have happiness, so provide it to others - a great job indeed in this world of sorrows and pains. You are really a Sunshine and have the capacity and capability to illuminate life of someone in dark. Your profile picture reflects on how hardworking you are, my great friend and sunshine.

Yes, every name has some meaning, but the question here is how much that meaning is relevant to the personality - as a reflection of it or influencing it. You have a great name, and hope you find fame soon.
